Interesting but not exciting. But does have an excellent chart for coloring your frosting 2. September 2014

The book “Sweet: Our Best Cupcakes, Cookies, Candy and More” from the editors of The Food Network Magazine has some interesting recipes, but nothing I found tremendously exciting. Out of the 152 recipes there are 10 that I flagged to try. I’m not a big fan of ice cream cakes and cream pies, so that knocked out a large percentage of the recipes, and while I do like peanut butter, there seemed to be a lot of peanut butter recipes (8 in all). The pictures on the front and back cover also didn’t trigger my typical drool response to anything sweet. Probably because ice cream was such a major component. (Sorry I just don’t like ice cream cakes.)

But there were a few of things I loved about the book. There is a recipe index that includes picture of each dessert. The picture index makes it so easy to find your favorites. The Fake-Out Cakes were also very creative and amusing (I flagged 3 of them to try). But strangely the most interesting thing I found in this book wasn’t a recipe at all, but a chart on coloring frosting. Using just 1 cup of white frosting and the standard food coloring bulbs of red, blue, yellow, and green, The Food Network editors show you how to create a rainbow of unique shades. Colors like Cotton Candy, or Pink Grapefruit. Mango, Mojito, Dried Lavender and Pinot Noir. 42 shades in all. Amazing.

For those with a sweet tooth who also have an artsy side 30. August 2014

This is a beautiful pastry book with gorgeous pictures. However, it is geared toward those who want to make sweets with a creative flair; such as cakes that look like potted plants and hamburgers. The instructions for each recipe are excellent as well.

There are a few simple recipes in the book but most recipes require more time to make. I decided to make the chewy chocolate chip cookies. This recipe actually required that I refrigerate the cookie dough between 1 hour and 24 hours (overnight). I refrigerated the dough for about 2 hours and it was easy to scoop onto the baking sheet. The cookies came out great and my boyfriend loved them as well. When I have more time I plan on making the blueberry buttermilk bundt cake which is another simple recipe.

Overall, I think this is a fabulous baking book for those with a sweet tooth and creative flair. Of course, there's no shortage of calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol in the resulting confection but anyone interested in a pastry book knows this. Also, time is needed to make these creations. The pictures are also astounding.

UPDATE: I made the blueberry buttermilk bundt cake and it came out great. I was going to forgo the icing but since the cake's only moisture is coming from the blueberries I decided to making the topping. Instead of the strawberries recommended, I used peaches which are now in season. One thing I learned from this latest recipe was to toss the blueberries with a little bit of flour so that they did not sink to the bottom of the batter. After slicing the cake, I noticed the blueberries did indeed stay put. Check the comments section of this review for a link to the picture on twitter.

Gorgeous Pictures! 20. August 2014

I am an unapologetic Food Network fan, so I was thrilled to get this book. This book is a simply glorious compilation of show stopping desserts.

And in true Food Network style, though they look impressive, the recipes are easy to follow.

The cookbook is full of gorgeous full color pictures of every recipe. It features cookies, cakes, fudge - it just may be the only dessert cookbook you need. The resident six-year-old and I went through the book and picked out some initial recipes to try. And it wasn't easy because everything looked delicious.

We made cookies and brownies (and they disappeared quickly after cooking), and yesterday made our pièce de résistance - a Fool The Eye cake that looked like a big bowl of guacamole! Now, I have to admit that I'm intimidated by those cakes, and this book has a few of them. There are cakes that look like burgers, peanut butter sandwiches and even cheese.

I shouldn't have worried. The instructions were clear and the recipe included photos of some of the important steps in the process, as well as the finished cake. The cake was gorgeous and impressive!

Finally, all the ingredients in the book are easily available in your local store.

This is perfect for the home cook who wants to bake an impressive and delicious dessert without stress!

Big print and pictures 31. August 2014

SWEET: OUR BEST CUPCAKES, COOKIES, CANDY, AND MORE is a new dessert cookbook from The Food Network. It is aimed at the beginner baker, although some recipes require more skill. (See the Fake Out Cakes, which you make to look like other things.) Some specialized tools like candy thermometers are needed for many recipes. For the most part, however, the tools and ingredients needed are simpleeci and common.

It is also a super pretty cookbook. Almost all of the recipes have a full-page photo of what it should look like. This means that there aren't a ton of recipes actually in the book, but they are done in large print, which is handy when you're trying to read and bake and the same time.

I particularly liked the little sections giving ideas on how to modify and jazz up recipes (such as brownies and whoopie pies). It's nice to have a little guidance on how to make the recipes your own.

The first recipe I tried was the Salted Caramel Thumbprints. These are basically a sugar cookie with some pretzels and dulce de leche for flair.

The resulting cookies were quite delicious. I found the base cookie a bit floury, but that is easy to adjust. I did cut the amount of pretzels the recipe called for, and I'm glad I made that decision - 1 c total was more than enough. I also added a touch less salt to the dough than called for out of respect to my family members with high blood pressure. The salt in the pretzels was plenty. I also didn't use a mixer, as the recipe calls for, because I don't own one. My arm strength did just fine.

I'm also impressed that the recipe made 24 cookies, just as it said it would. I find that recipes often overestimate how many cookies will be produced.

I'm excited to try some other recipes from this very pretty cookbook!

For Your Sweettooth 22. August 2014

My daughter and I love to bake, and our families love to eat our food. My daughter is actually a better cake and cupcake baker, and what a time we will have with this cookbook. Each recipe looks original, some are so outlandish, that it seems impossible to make. However, we are assured that these recipes are Food Network's favorites and all triple tested.

This collection includes recipes for any occasion, with step-by-step instructions and color photographs. There are 336 pages and 8 chapters. Of note, the Table of Contents has a picture of every recipe along with the page number. Don't stop to linger there. The introduction gives us an idea of why this cookbook was conceived and the impetus behind the Fake Out Cakes. Every recipe in this book is easy to follow. We start with:

Cupcakes and Whoopie Pies- these are very unusual cupcakes and the whoopie pies are a family favorite. However, in this cookbook, many variations of whoopie pies are given, and what a treat.

Cookies and Bars- salted caramel pretzel thumbprints caught my eye , as did the twist on brownies, any variation you can think of and more.

Candy and Snacks- chocolate covered truffles and cinnamon nut raisins.

Pies and Crumbles- probably my favorite chapter, country peach pie and blueberry, almond crumble.

Fake Out Cakes- cheeseburger cake and cheese wheel cake, true cake desserts.

Show Off Cakes- this will be my daughter's favorite chapter. Bourbon Praline cake and Hazelnut Dacouoise.

Frozen Treats- lemon raspberry sorbet cake and vanilla malted ice cream cake.

Holiday Desserts- king cake and ghostly meringues.

And finally, the Index. Each chapter has between 15 and 25 recipes. The photographs are simply glorious, these talented photographers know how to sell a dessert in their photos. This is a beautiful dessert cookbook. There is an e-book version, but this one really takes the cake!

Recommended. prisrob 08-22-14
