5.0 von 5 Sternen Great tips on lightening the load, but not for people that don't understand the ultralight philosphy. 26. November 2013
Von Frank T. Steele - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This book gets down to brass tacks. It is not for everyone. The book is more recommendations for lightening your load, not on skills or philosphy.

Having lunked around a 70 lb pack in the Army I decided i would lighten my civilian load when camping with my son's scout troop. I thought a 30-35 lb pack was great at first. But then I found backpackinglight.com and my hiking/backpacking life changed! I now have a 8 lb pack (sans food and water) that includes my sleeping bag, the pack, stove and cooking utensils, water purifier and my shelter (about 15 lbs with 3 days food and water, on a wet trail)

This book follows that same philosophy, but where as I hike light so I can enjoy my surroundings (feels like a day hike even though I have 3 days supplies) the reason to go light here is the increased mobility may save your life.

Keep in mind he tells you up front it Ain't cheap. A backpacking rig (The "big 3, shelter, sleeping bag and pack) plus cooking gear etc. at 20-25 lbs can be $250 for a typical scout 3 day outing. That same rig in my 8 lb outfit is $2000+.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An easy read with solid recommendations. 1. September 2013

There is a growing industry of "prepping" advice books. Much of it consists of armchair commando nonsense. This small book is one of the exceptions. Its purpose is more than specific recommendations (though those are good). The author gets you to think in a common sense way about what you really need for those 72 hours. Lugging around seventy-five pounds of fancy, light weight gear on your back is still seventy-five pounds. Cut out the useless or redundant stuff and become more agile and efficient. This is even more important for those of us that are older and perhaps more injury prone. It's about clear thinking, good choices, and rehearsing. Read the book and get busy!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Good Resource For Constructing Your Own Effective Bug Out Bags 11. November 2013
Von goldenb - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
We are certainly living in interesting and uncertain times. Simply watching the news or reading the paper is enough to convince anyone paying attention that natural and man-made disasters are not rare occurrences. Scoffing at making at least the basic preparations for such events is not a wise move for those interested in the welfare of themselves as well as their families.

This book addresses construction of the increasingly popular Bug Out Bag (BOB) also known as Go Bags or GOOD (Get Out of Dodge) bags. The author provides useful insights into constructing a light weight Bug Out Bag containing important items for emergency situations. Also included are a healthy number of links allowing the reader to research further based on their own personal criteria. I especially like the section on various medical supplies, all with related links, although it is deserving of its own section (you will find it in the "Get rid of wasteful packaging section"). Emphasis is on the critical first 72 hours, that being the elapsed amount of time before help can be expected to begin arriving.

I have seen many articles and much material on what to include in Bug Out Bags but this has to be about the best and well worth the price. I was given this book to review and am glad to have had the opportunity. Highly recommended no matter where you are in the construction of your own Bug Out Bags.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Information on Bug-Out-Bag Firearms 3. Juli 2013
Von Shannon Bowyer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The best part of this book is the section on defensive tools for the bug-out-bag. Lots of good advice on handgun modifications and custom ammunition that will make it more versatile and able to handle more tasks like longer range shooting and hunting.

A "must-read" just for the section on guns!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good idea, not very thorough 11. Januar 2014
Von L. Taylor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The idea is a good one. Too many of us just buy what is cheap and easy, not taking into consideration weight and portability in extreme conditions. And the book does offer lots of very expensive brand options to consider. These things alone are worth the (low) price of the (short) ebook, just as food for thought as we put together our bug-out bags.

What the book does not do, however, is to tell you what you actually need to put into such a kit in order to survive. There is no organized elements of survival list to teach the novice what essentials are vital. Some things that are necessary to survival are not even mentioned in the book, like tools needed to start a fire. Maybe it's because waterproof matches or strikers are already lightweight, but to exclude such information might be deadly to an uninformed reader in a potential future scenario.

It is also not a book on what to do with the kit in order to survive once you have it, except to say that you should use it before you ever actually need it, which is good advice.

The book takes about 1/3 of its length dealing with firearms. It never mentions slingshots, archery, snares and traps, or constructing such things once in a survival situation.

Nevertheless, the premise of the book is worth the price, and the fact that specific products are linked makes it easier to begin research on ultra lightweight products for an ultra lightweight 72 hour survival kit.
