Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Alan Calvert was one of the most important and most under-rated figures in the history of physical culture. He was the founder and publisher of STRENGTH MAGAZINE and the founder of MILO BARBELL COMPANY in the early 1900's. MILO was the first mass produced graduated plate loaded modern barbell. STRENGTH magazine was an early leader in physical culture and many famous legends of the Iron Game such as Mark Berry, John C. Grimek, and many others, got their start there. Calvert's classic book SUPER STRENGTH is considered by many strength historians to be "The Bible" of muscle building and weight training. Alan Calvert is truly one of the most influential men in the history of the Iron Game and Physical Culture.

Leider ist die vorliegende Version nichts weiter als eine minderwertige Reproduktion des Originals! Der Schriftsatz ist
lieblos, die großartigen alten Fotografien sind lediglich in Form von schlechten (das kann heutzutage jeder mit seinem
Scanner zuhause besser) Fotokopien wiedergegeben! Diese "Auflage" ist keinen Cent wert. Finger weg!

Unfortunately, this edition of this classic book is nothing but a low-quality reproduction of the orignal! The typeset was
done rather carelessly, the fantastic old photographies are reproduced in form of abyssmally bad (today, anyone could
do better with his scanner at home) photocopies. This version of this book is not worth a single dime! Hands off!

Awesome! The Classics now Available! 1. April 2012
Von Bill Piche - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
My first reaction Super Strength from Physical Culture Books was "Wow!" Talk about impressive! Staring me in the face was the Iron Game classic by Alan Calvert in a modern super high quality book format. I have personally seen several other attempts to re-publish such classics as Super Strength and frankly they looked like cheap and cheesy copy machine reproductions. Everyone can now have the Iron Game classics in super high quality readable reproductions that will last on your bookshelf. Physical Culture Books has certainly hit the nail on the head with how they are reproducing the classics of the Iron Game!

As far as the person claiming there were a lot of typo's....

There are probably a few minor scanning errors that might have been missed but certainly no "spelling mistakes" unless the word was mis-spelled in the original book. I think those that are truly interested in the Iron Game would rather have a book that is almost perfect with a few missed minor scanning errors than a PERFECT book that costs ten dollars more (especially when the error is so minor that it has no effect on the reading.)

Classic Stuff 10. Februar 2013
Von Sisyphus Lives - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
There are two main genres when it comes to books on weight/strength training: 1- Training for the competitive lifter. 2- Training for those who want to look strong and freaky. I'm not interested in the latter, and I don't have the gifts for competitive Olympic lifting or Powerlifting in my 50s. Calvert may have leaned toward the bodybuilding side, but the most valuable content of his book is geared more toward functional strength, fitness and health. This is what I look for in a training publication, not vanity. The best lat spread and symmetry in the world won't help you in stacking hay bales.

Super Strength was written in an era when athletics wasn't polluted with chemistry. Calvert's views on sensible diet are refreshing to read in this day and age. Man's teeth indicate that he can eat meat, vegetable, grain, and nut. Eat a good balance of the above, and 'calories are calories'. No need to chuck down special proteins, eclectic vitamins, amino acids, or hormones.

In addition to the restoration of the text, I also liked the old photographs, and seeing what various "lost" lifts look like. Physical Cultrue Books has done a fine job in restoring written works of Alan Calvert, Georg Hackenschmidt, Bob Peoples, and others, so information on sensible training does not become lost or corrupted. My hat is off to the publisher.

A Great Book 1. April 2012
Von Bob Whelan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This is one of the best books you can read if you want real strength training information. I didn't notice many errors at all but if there were some they were probably minor like an i showing as a 1 in a scan. Worth every penny and more. You can't go wrong here unless you are extremely picky. See a sample for yourself. *** Click on the LOOK INSIDE above to get a feel for the real quality of this book.

From Alan to Alan 25. Juni 2013
Von Alan Cherney - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
My name is Alan Cherney. I was named after Alan Calvert. My father, Nicholas loved this book. I am almost 70. I do not lift weights, but I believe in Super Strength. This book is a classic. Alan Calvert believed in helping young men, and making all of us stronger. For him it was a religion or a "Way". During the 1920's there was a revival in Health, Muscles, etc. It was a Spirit thing. In this book, a man's muscles and structure was viewed as holy artwork. Where have all the flowers gone? alan calvert, for free, would send frequent flyers and broshures to his young weightlifters, encouraging them, and supplying them with his latest thoughts and revalations. I have one of these, and will share it if you want: azki_dj@yahoo.com

Large no. of typos 31. März 2012
Von James - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I love the content of this book and it is great to have these old strength titles available BUT this is the third book I have purchased from Physical Culture Books and each one had a huge number of typographical errors. I'm talking lots. It's hard to understand how books with so many mistakes could be released for purchase. The errors include spelling mistakes but also key stroke errors particularly when relating to measurements e.g. heights or weights. It would appear they have technical problems with their word processing system.
