Crais makes it clear by all sorts of allusions that he is in the tradition of Raymond Chandler. However, his plot is clear and understandable, very well written, good subplot and the wisecracks are not over the top which is something I find a bit tiresome in Robert B. Parker. Crais also manages to create an interesting character without falling into the trap of giving too much space to the private life of his protagonist. At the end of the day it's one of the few fresh and modern private detective novels.
