The charms of her irresistible debut, Watermelon (1998), are diluted in Keyes's latest effort, in which an Irish office-worker in London, who enjoys the swinging-singles life but has horrible luck with men, suddenly understands why she chooses to cavort with losers. Lucy, a diminutive lass with a wicked sense of humor, shares an apartment with a couple of women who are every bit as eager to party hearty as she is. The three live for their weekend binges, and for the men encountered thereby, but when she goes to a fortune-teller with her workmates, the news of imminent marriage she receives makes Lucy look at her next boyfriend in an entirely new way. Not that hes terribly different from his predecessors: Gus, picked up at a bash that Lucy attends, sweeps her off her feet and drinks all the friend's Guinness. Though hes penniless, jobless, and without a home he's willing to take her to, his charm and boyish looks are enough to make Lucy think he's The One, so he moves in and helps her drink through her wages. Even when he disappears for three weeks without an explanation, she still takes him backto the horror of her roommates. But then Gus goes for good, just in time for Lucy's mom to announce she's leaving her incontinent drunk of a husband, making Lucy feel obligated to live with her dad and turn things right for him. When shes back home, the ugly truth finally dawns: all her men resemble Daddy. But once she sees the light, she also sees theres a man who doesn't fit the patternand he's been waiting patiently for her to realize it. An odd mix of witty dialogue and hard-core alcoholic reality thats compromised by flat characterization, particularly in Lucy's case. I had such fun reading this book. The title alone made me laugh and once I opened the book I was not disappointed one bit. This is the first of Marian Keyes books that I have read and I will certainly pick up the rest. She has a wonderful witty style that comes across to the reader in abundance yet she can also write about the hard times in life that we must all go through with a sense of dolefullness and a softness that keeps the reader involved.
Lucy Sullivan is single, desperately so, works at a dull, dead end job and lives with two flatmates - Karen, the egotistical and ruthless one and Charlotte, the sweet and somewhat ditzy other one. The reader can't help but take Lucy's view of these characters.
Her office workers convince her to go to a fortune teller who announces, among other things, that Lucy will be married within the year. Lucy, like the reader, laughs this prediction off but as her officemates' predictions begin to come true one can't help but think that Lucy has a chance.
Through the book we meet her best friend Daniel, who Karen has the hots for, Meridia, her over weight and fabulous co-worker, Gus, the man of Lucy's dreams as well as her parents. Lucy tries to keep her head about her while her flighty boyfriend comes and goes, her job becomes duller and her family begins to fall apart.
But will Lucy find the man of her dreams? Will she be able to hold it all together? Only time will tell (as will readers of this book). While Marian Keyes seems to follow a bit of a pattern in the book, it doesn't seem to hold her back one bit.
I laughed along with Lucy and felt sorrow along with her. With lines like, 'If I had left then, that second, I would have missed the arrival of my anger. But no, I met it me at the door as it staggered in, gasping and panting, worn out from the crosstown journey. "Sorry I am late," it wheezed, cluthing it's chest. "Awful traffic..."' one can't help but totally know what Lucy feels like. Her struggles are very true to life as are the situations she finds herself in. If female readers don't see a bit of themselves in her I'd be surprised.
Anyone that enjoys watch 'Sex in the City' or has read and enjoyed Bridget Jones or Girls Guide to Hunting and fishing will certainly enjoy this book.

I just finished reading Lucy Sullivan and of all the books Keyes has written I think this one is the least enjoyable. The first book I read by Keyes was Watermelon and I loved it so much that I immediately arranged to get all her other books. (Since I live in Israel that requires more than just going to the local book store.) Although this book was at times very funny, and insightful, I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers and say that I just didn't care about these characters (namely Lucy Sullivan whose behaviour after awhile really got on my nerves) like I cared about the characters in Keyes other books, especially in Watermelon and Rachel's Holiday. But Keyes remains one of my current favorite authors and I look forward to anything she writes in the future.

I read "Watermelon" and it wasn't one of my favs. but so many of my friend had told me what a wonderful writer Marian Keyes is, so I decided to try again. So, I did, with "Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married". Boy, am I glad I did. This was such a fun book. I truly enjoyed it. It was light, humorus and a real treat to read. It's not deep and emotional, but then again it doesn't claim to be. It lives up to my friends high praise. Good Call!

Leider sehr enttäuschend
Ich bin ein großer Marian Keyes Fan und konnte bis zu diesem Buch bedingungslos ihre Bücher weiterempfehlen( Other Side of the Story, Angels, Anybody Out there, This... Lesen Sie weiter...

Boring
Dieses Buch ist stinklangweilig. Leider gelingt es Keyes hier nicht, die Reifung der extrem unreifen Lucy Sullivan nachzuvollziehen. Lesen Sie weiter...

Oberflaehlich, nicht nach vollziehbar, schreckliche Charaktere
Dieses Buch hat mich sehr enttaeuscht. Ich konnte mich ueberhaupt nicht in die Protagonistin hineinversetzen, schlimmer noch: ich mochte sie und die anderen Figuren nicht... Lesen Sie weiter...

Nicht besonders spannend
Bei weitem nicht so gut wie die anderen Bücher von M. Keyes; Ende vorhersehbar, die Geschichte hat Längen. Dennoch ein nettes Buch, aber nicht mehr.

boring and disappointing

If you loved "Sushi for beginners" you'll be disappointed.
I loved "Sushi for beginners", so I bought this book, but I found it totally boring. The story is predictable and I missed the good ideas and turns in the plot the author developed... Lesen Sie weiter...
