SUGAR & SPICE is the best-selling, controversial crime thriller the agents called "the last taboo". Based on research and details from the case of notorious murderer, Robert Black and his capture,Sugar & Spice was deemed "Too controversial for the British market."

Close to half a million readers thought otherwise. (Sugar & Spice has now sold well over 300,000 copies and been downloaded free in excess of 100,000 times)
~
Would you trust a convicted sex offender to help you find your daughter's killer? Claire did... Inspired by a news story of a man who begged a Judge to give him a longer sentence, because he knew he would harm again if released without treatment, Sugar & Spice is meticulously researched, asking the questions society prefers not to have answered. At once disquieting and challenging,Sugar & Spice is car-crash reading. Be warned: In Sugar & Spice not all things are nice...

Everyone has demons. What do you do when you can't keep them quiet any longer?

3.0 von 5 Sternen Sugar and Spice and nothing nice 23. März 2011
Von Kathryn Delaney - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I finished reading SUGAR AND SPICE by Saffina Desforges. This is, on some levels, a hard book to read, and on others very easy.

The story begins with the discovery of the body of a missing child. She is found with the tell-tales signs of a serial killer, "calling card" and all. A suspect is arrested and the child's mother goes to see him in an attempt to understand why her daughter died. But subsequent missing and murdered children make it clear, the authorities have the wrong person.

I had the feeling the author has an agenda with this story. The authorities come off looking bad in their jobs - the police jump to conclusions and force confessions from innocent suspects, Social Services workers are eager to find child abuse where there is none and adults discount the ideas of young people just because they ARE young.

The red herrings are plenty. In fact, once the identity was revealed, I felt a bit angry for reasons I can't explain here without spoiling the ending for you. Suffice it to say, Desforges doesn't play fair!

While it may be hard to read about abducted and murdered children, it is just as hard to read about authority misused. That's the hard part about reading this book. The easy part is the writing style. Desforges does indeed move the story along. The climax is rather "exciting" and kept me engaged.

All in all, I give this one 3 1/2 stars of 5.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Riveting and disturbing in equal measure. 8. Dezember 2011

I have never read a book in which so many sympathetic (at least at the onset) characters are pedophiles. It's a bit of a mind-screw, actually; if not for the fact that the authors are not American and that the book was written well before the Penn State scandal broke, I would swear that one in particular was based off of an intense study of Sandusky. This book is tautly plotted, fantastically researched (only mistake I noted was that Jack the Ripper was much more likely to be a disorganized offender than an organized one, and even as I type I realize that being able to pull this info off the top of my head says something about me...), and features a young profiler who fast became my favorite new character of the year. (A place previously held by Lisbeth of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.) It's incredibly disturbing in places, and I never thought I would encounter an arc where chemical castration would actually constitute a happy ending, but Sugar & Spice is an altogether engrossing and deeply layered ride. A definite recommendation.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't finish it 9. März 2011

Wow, I can't believe all the 5-star reviews! Yes, the writing is fluid and the authors obviously have talent, but the story is marked by so many implausible events and characters that it became impossible for me to finish: police brutality so egregious it defies logic; social workers who are strangely inept and easily manipulated into bumbling fools; and a precocious young teen who can not only hack into secure databases (plausible), but who's also so well versed in pedophilia that he can name any perpetrator ever arrested (improbable).

The book is well researched but bogs down with too many references to infamous pedophiles. The premise is intriguing and done right, it could have been a first rate thriller. Too bad the authors felt the need to make the professionals involved in the investigation either villains or fools, and expect the reader to suspend disbelief one too many times.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An edge-of-seat read. 12. Oktober 2011
Von S. Wharton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

QUOTE - "Neurotics build castles in the sky. Psychotics live in them. Psychotherapists collect the rent. More tea?"

Although this was a very difficult read in parts, and uncomfortable throughout, it was still one of the best books I've read. You should know a something about this before reading it.

It deals with pedophiles in a very open and real way. You enter the thoughts and fantasies of those who want to touch, but do not act, those who want to touch and do so, and those who want to touch, do so, but also kill. Be prepared for this, and if you think you can handle it, delve into its murky depths and when you reach them, swim right back to the surface, otherwise you know the saying, 'Look too long into the abyss, and the abyss will look into you.' (Or something like that anyway!)

NOTE- There were occasional writing errors, plus the chapters breaks hindered the flow, slightly. And although I did see the ending coming, it had layers I hadn't predicted.

This is a great, well researched thriller which should make you question the world, as it informs. An amazing first book, too.

I was given this for review by the publisher.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Riveting and compelling, it's almost impossible to turn away 3. April 2011
Von GraceKrispy (MotherLode blog) - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This novel by Saffina Desforges is immediately gripping. The topic is a terrifying train wreck; I was appalled, yet unable to look away. The author does a fantastic job presenting this controversial topic in a way that forces the reader to confront her own feelings and understanding of what is appropriate when it comes to sexual urges. The general feel is almost sympathetic towards pedophiles at times, but not necessarily sympathetic towards those who act on those urges, and that's an important distinction. Getting into the mind of several different pedophiles is not comfortable or easy, but the author smoothly compels the reader to take another perspective, if only for a moment, and confront what is appalling. Initially a bit slow for me, the story really picked up, and the 546 pages (on my sony) went by quickly. I was unable and unwilling to put the book down in the last several hundred pages. The characterization is beautifully done, and even the most loathsome characters manage to be somewhat sympathetic, if only as you pity them. There are some compelling ideas presented, soundlessly intertwined with the storyline. There are several storylines presented throughout the story, coming together at various points in the book. In retrospect, it seemed a bit disjointed, but felt fitting while engaged in the book.

With such a fluid writing style and compelling plot, I wanted to be drawn in through to the end. The frequent chapter breaks were too distracting to allow that. I wondered at one point if the chapter breaks were put in at regular intervals to ensure the chapters were the same length. Many of the chapters almost seemed placed to purposefully break the flow, which was confusing and disconcerting. A conversation would end abruptly because of a chapter break, but then continue in the next chapter as if nothing had happened. It gave me a "wait, did anyone else see that break?" type of feeling. I'd rather have seen the chapter breaks when the setting or characters changed, or when a major plot event was revealed. Additionally, there were some typos in the form of missing punctuation and incorrect word substitutions (e.g., you for your). For the number of pages, the typos were not overly excessive, but they were noticeable and sometimes required a second read of a sentence or phrase. Finally, I'm still not sure what I think of the ending. I had made a guess halfway through the book that turned out to have some merit, but the actual conclusion was unexpected. I loved that I didn't figure it all out, but the ending almost seemed a bit of a mockery of the rest of the story. It didn't help that a character at the end shared an historical perspective of pedophilia that was eerily reminiscent to that shared by an earlier character. It seemed less a thought-provoking perspective and more like propaganda at that point.

Still, all in all, this was a riveting and thought-provoking book that made it difficult to turn away until the last page was turned.
