Never before seen by the general public: a rare glimpse inside a Los Angeles-class (SSN-688) nuclear submarine ... with Tom Clancy as your guide. Only the author of The Hunt for Red October could capture the reality of life aboard a nuclear submarine. Only a writer of Mr. Clancy's magnitude could obtain security clearance for information, diagrams, and photographs never before available to the public. Now, for the first time, every civilian can enter this top secret world and experience the drama and excitement of this stunning technological achievement.... the weapons, the procedures, the people themselves... the startling facts behind the fiction that made Tom Clancy a #1 bestseller.

Submarine includes:

  • Exclusive photographs, illustration, and diagrams
  • Mock war scenarios and weapons launch procedures
  • An inside look at life on board, from captain to crew, from training exercises to operations
  • The fascinating history and evolution of submarines
PLUS: Tom Clancy's controversial views on submariner tactics and training methods.

From Kirkus Reviews

Up periscope! with America's favorite armchair technowarrior, who here, with the cooperation of the Navy, takes readers deeper than they've ever gone inside a nuclear submarine. Clancy's fascination with underseas combat dates back at least as far as his debut novel, the sub-set The Hunt for Red October, and you can sense his pride and excitement as--after a brief but well-informed survey of the history of submarines and of a submariner's training- -he takes us aboard the USS Miami, an Improved Los Angeles-class boat berthed at the US Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut. Those who share Clancy's almost erotic admiration for technology won't be disappointed by the tour: ``It is easy to tell that the Miami is equipped with the Mk 32 VLS system, since it is sitting level in the water,'' he tells us at once, adding that the ``33-foot- diameter hull is...approximately 3 inches thick and composed of HNY-80 high tensile steel.'' But fans of human-interest also will find that's engaging here, as the author notes, for example, that life aboard the Miami is akin to ``a combination of living in an oversized motor home and summer camp,'' with no privacy but much esprit de corps, where sleep deprivation is a major problem but dining is ``a pleasure,'' except for the preponderance of three- bean salad and the horrid-tasting orange ``bug juice''--which however, makes ``an excellent scouring powder for cleaning floors and heads.'' Clancy follows up his tour of the Miami with a briefer one of a British sub; a rundown of various submarine missions; and glances at other countries' submarines (Sweden, it turns out, has a formidable sub force). All in all: a fast-paced silent running that will please many of the author's fans--enough, perhaps, to allow a surfacing on the bestseller lists. Format:Taschenbuch

Actually I would give this book 3 and half stars. This book represents an effort to give a comprehensive introduction to modern nuclear attack submarine. This effort itself is respectful. But just like most other military technical books you find in an average bookstore, Clancy's work is filled with technical inacurracies. One obvious example: the side view of Kilo sub at the end of the book is totally out of proportion. And Clancy's USA-always-No.-1 arrogance is a bit annoying. In his tatical senarios, which are entertaining to read, he just assumes too little of the enemies' intelligence in blunt statement such as "the captain of the Russian boat tries the same evasion tactics as his American opponent, but they are probably not as effective." At another occasion he calls the Soviet Union a "babarian country."

In short, this book is adequate in providing amateur knowledge on attack submarine and is entertaining as a leisure reading. But maybe it's just not worth the money of serious collectors. The easily accessible accurate info. could be found in the menu of Jane's game 688I, Hunter/Killer (although it's quite dry to read), or US Submarines since 1945: an Illustrated Design History by Friedman and Chritley.

Pretty good book. 28. Februar 1999

This book contains a lot of good information on submarines in general, not just those of the U.S. Navy. Basically, I more or less agree with all of the other reviews regarding the value of the information Clancy provides, which is quite good and a genuine pleasure to read. Obviously, a lot of the information is classified, so about half of the book is Tom Clancy's best guesses, which are definitely more educated than mine. However, I sometimes find his writing syle rediculously all-knowing and jingoistic. I guess you have to take the good with the bad; the good being the abundance of research, as well as the overly conversational tone in which it is presented, and the bad being all the drivel you have to swim through to get it. Still, I don't think there have been very many people who have done as much for the military in terms of giving credit and honors to the people who serve than Tom Clancy.
