Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina. By the time her husband Jeff, miffed over a recent argument, reports her missing, the trail has grown cold. Literally. Fog and ice encapsulate the mountainous wilderness and paralyze the search for her.

While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory, suffering from an unexplained head injury, regains consciousness and finds herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark that he won't even tell her his name. She's determined to escape him, and willing to take any risks necessary to survive.

Unexpectedly, however, the two have a dangerous encounter with people who adhere to a code of justice all their own. At the center of the dispute is a desperate young woman whom Emory can't turn her back on, even if it means breaking the law.

As her husband's deception is revealed, and the FBI closes in on her captor, Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is, in fact, her rescuer.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Mean Streak 19. August 2014
Von Jennifer C - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
4.5 stars

I must first thank Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC and the opportunity to review Mean Steak.

A little background ... Emory, a well known doctor, disappears while training for an upcoming marathon. Her husband doesn't immediately report her missing. Meanwhile, Emory awakes in a strangers company.

What follows is a story that is not always what it seems. Brown delivers a fast-paced read with believable characters {sometimes so believable I was ready to throttle them myself}. Wait until you get to the final twist. I for one didn't see it coming. I love it when I think I've got it all figured out and the author throws in that last surprise!

A fantastic read that will appeal to all mystery/thriller readers who like a little romance thrown in.

Mark your calendars for August 19, 2014. You'll want to grab Mean Streak as soon as it hits shelves!

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of the best books I've read 21. August 2014
Von Jillian Read-Love-Blog - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Mean Streak is the newest novel from author Sandra Brown and a novel I was beyond lucky to have read early. I was intrigued from the synopsis and by the end of the book I was completely in love with every single aspect of this story. Amazing doesn’t even begin to do it justice.
Pediatrician Emory Charbonneau’s love for long distance running has been a bone of contention in her marriage for quite some time now but that won’t deter her from heading off a hundred miles into the mountains on a training run. In fact, it’s just the weekend break she needs to take a breather from the latest argument she had with her husband. Things were looking more and more bleak in her marriage and she would deal with it…when she got back. Unfortunately that wouldn’t be on Sunday as she had planned. Emory sets off on her run and wakes in a small cabin with a gash on her head, a headache from hell, and a stranger taking care of her. Her immediate reaction is one of fear and confusion but almost as quickly as those feelings settle in she senses this stranger wouldn’t hurt her and with bad weather rolling in and no way to contact her husband or friends, she would be stuck with him for a day or two. Hopefully her second set of emotions ring true and this stranger won’t be putting her in danger while she recovers a bit and tries to figure out how she ended up in this situation in the first place. Was she attacked? By this man? Did she fall? By the time her stay in the mountain cabin is over she will be warring with too many emotions to name and will have to reconcile with the fact that maybe the people she has trusted aren’t the ones she should and maybe this stranger was….
You all know I read. A lot. And every once in a while a book comes along that touches me on a different level and when it happens it’s magic. This was one of those books. While there are a few things I can’t give away, I can tell you that this is without a doubt a book you need to have in your library. Emory’s story starts off with quite a bang and doesn’t let up until the very end. There were so many twists and turns and questions along the way and it all had me glued to this book. Emory’s husband was suspect from the start and I didn’t know if he was the one behind her accident or even if it was an accident. Ms. Brown did an amazing job with giving the reader warring emotions when it came to him. There was also the stranger to consider. Emory’s savior…or was he? I will tell you that from the time we meet him you just know the story behind him is going to be emotional…good or bad, it was going to be rough. He is one of the most memorable and incredible characters I’ve ever read. No, he doesn’t speak a whole lot. No, we don’t know his name until the last few chapters. No, we don’t find out his story until the very end but that didn’t make one bit of difference. His actions and mannerisms said more than words. He is rigid and tough, living simply but has a soft side he shows only a few times in this story. But still we are left to wonder if he’s dangerous or if he’s one of the good guys. We are lead to believe from the hints he gives of himself that he isn’t exactly one of the good guys but it didn’t matter to me…I loved him anyway.
Of course, while Emory is in the woods, her husband and friends are looking for her and that leads to more than a few revelations that had me gasping audibly more than a few times. I can’t give anything away but be ready for a heaping spoonful of “I never saw THAT coming”!
Just trust me when I say this is a book you need to read. Suspense, mystery, and high emotion are just a few of the facets that make Mean Streak one of the best books I have ever read. Thank you, Ms. Brown, for a phenomenal story that will stay with me for a very long time.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Edge of Your Seat, Up All Night Reading, Suspenseful Romance! 19. August 2014
Von BJ - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
If you are looking for an edge of your seat, up all night reading, suspenseful romance; then look no further, Mean Streak by Sandra Brown should be your next read! With endless twists and turns, this book reminded me of one of my all-time favorites, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

This is the type of read where you must question everything, dissect every line, and be cautious not to be tantalized by the low hanging fruit. Moreover, it makes the passion all the more decadent and raw, when you're constantly questioning the characters' mores and motivations, making your heart and passion fall for what should be forbidden and undoubtedly what common sense tells you to be wary of. But in fiction like in life, you can't help who you fall in love with. Sandra Brown is a wiz at this writing style, which is one of my all-time favorites.

Dr. Emory Charbonneau, is in a relatively loveless marriage. A pediatrician and marathon runner, she is a Type A personality who approaches everything in life with her incredible drive and motivation. The fact that she is heiress also allows her to support numerous charitable causes and she is very well liked and respected in the community.

When she disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina, while training alone for a marathon, it launches a massive manhunt. Bad weather conditions, however, make finding her difficult, and form the perfect excuse, or is it motivation, for the loner who finds her to keep her in his secluded cabin.

The authorities question why Emory's husband, Jeff, took so long to report her missing. Soon motives abound, but they still can't find her due to the inclement weather. Emory, in turn, suffering from blunt head trauma, which may have been caused by a fall or something more nefarious, doesn't know what to think when she gains consciousness and believes herself to be the captive of a man who can, at best, be described as a conundrum. Violent and yet clearly kind to her, and secretive to the point of even refusing to disclose his name, while yet inspiring her to spill her secrets. She's drawn to him and wants to trust him, and yet she's determined to escape him.

An even more imminent threat is revealed, and Emory joins forces with the mysterious man who soon has her questioning her own sense of right and wrong and causing her to engage, in arguably criminal behavior. The traumatic experience that they share, and the culmination of numerous days spent with this enticing, perplexing stranger, cause her emotions to be so exposed and their joint intensity is so overwhelming, that their shared passion is inevitable. But the next day, the cold stranger returns and deposits her back to her old life. Leaving her to explain the unexplainable and potentially leaving her in the cross hairs of an even graver danger.

I already knew the genius of Sandra Brown's writing. Mean Streak, in fact, was the book that I was looking forward to the most of all the August releases. Delightfully, Ms. Brown continues to deliver 5-star reads, and Mean Streak is no exception, that's why she's earned a place on my auto-buy list!

1.0 von 5 Sternen Not My Cup of Tea!!! 28. August 2014
Von Sabrina - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I did not care for this book. I hate Harlequin romance books and this is what it was like to me. It is one of those where the two main characters are drawn to each other but have to "fight their passion for each other". A few pages of this wouldn't be bad but it went on for the whole book and I wanted to scream go again and go to bed together and get it over and concentrate more on the story. I also figured out the "bad guy" by the second chapter. The reason the main male character was hiding out once it was revealed was unrealistic I thought. This is just my opinion and I am sure by the good reviews that are posted that a lot of people like this kind of book and more power to them but it is not for me.

2.0 von 5 Sternen SUSPEND BELIEF 22. August 2014
Von BarbaraJean - Veröffentlicht auf

Who writes these 4 and 5 star reviews? This was the worst Sandra Brown book I have ever read and I have read them all. Spoiler ahead-- how can any one believe an attacker can come up behind a marathon runner and hit her on the head, not once, but TWICE? No where in the book does it say the attacker is a runner: in addition one would think the runner would HEAR someone coming. Then you have an FBI agent spending 4 years chasing down a man who IS NOT WANTED BY THE LAW. Hello? The reasoning given for the agent looking for our hero was thin, very thin. Then we have the country sheriff's office with two comic, hillbilly type characters who prove to be smarter than the husband thought--haven't we all heard of this before? I gave this book 2 stars because Sandra really does know how to write in a way that holds your interest, but, please, get this book from the library and save your money. I was really disappointed in this book and the plot that had so many unbelievable points.
