Dark Awakening begins an epic fantasy series wrought with fire and steel that follows the life of a young sword-wielding wizard born with a rare and under-appreciated gift. His home of Gadrale Keep, once merely a border fortress that has long since come to serve as a mage academy must now face its greatest trial.
Strange deaths and disappearances plague the people of the nearby city and the authorities have been unable to learn anything about who or what may be behind it. When tragedy befalls someone close to him, he finds himself at the center of a terrible secret that will shake the very foundations of his world...

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing 27. Juni 2011
Von Eldon J. Stracke II - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This book reads like something written by one whose first language is something other than English; awkward sentence structure and poor word usage run rampant, and this tends to further slow the already crawling plotline.

What's worse is the plausibility of character actions and events gives this novel the inescapable feel of a work geared towards children, despite any allowance for the setting being a fantasy world of magic.

In short, another poor and seemingly rushed attempt to capitalize on the success of "Harry Potter", and one that should be labeled 'Young Adult'.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The series is a great capitvating long read 21. August 2011

If you are always looking for captivating engaging books that will keep you absorbed and yet not end too fast, then both of the first two books of this series are a welcome treat.
I actually found the first book to be the better of the two, perhaps more because the characters are great and there is a good solid mystery that is the focus of much of it.
The second book had some great development, creative challenges, and overall action which keeps one reading all the way to the end and wanting more.
There are about three things that hold me back from giving 5 stars:
- no real oomph or focus for reflection after reading the entire books - these books are meant to be read just once
- by the middle of the 2nd book you get the feeling that the story might be getting a little formulaic, or bogged down
- While the characters are good here and change over time, I only give five stars to books that bring a little more out.
So, at the prices, for the fun of reading, and for their length...these are definite buys but don't expect much more than that. Solid 4 stars.

UPDATE: Warning to other reviewers of this work:
Among books I've reviewed, the helpful/unhelpful ratings of reviews of this book seem unusually tied to the number of stars in the rating. My review here doesn't particularly stand out as biased or unfair in comparison with my other reviews, yet it's garnered an unusually large number of 'unhelpful' votes. No comments have been left regarding the deficiency of the review, which is also suspicious.

... regarding the author's long-winded, detailed descriptions, as described by other reviewers here. I do think it's a worthy book nonetheless.

For a particular example of the tediously descriptive nature of the writing, very early in the book the author spends a couple pages on describing the main character's clothing, which serves absolutely no plot purpose. And even though his clothing is obviously mended/repaired/replaced again and again, it is never subsequently described.

I can also sympathize with the 'Harry Potter-ish' nature of the plot.

I would give this a 4-star if the main character didn't annoy me through the whole first half of the book whining about his self doubts and obviously flawed arguments regarding a lack of worthiness.

I think there's a lot of potential in the author... but like most authors, I imagine if he read his own early work (presumably such as this), he's say "ugg.. I wrote this?"

So on to the good parts... after the main character stops whining, the plot becomes reasonable. The interpersonal relationships/interactions are quite good and consistent, particularly in the second half of the book. The writing flows fairly well, with relatively little awkward phrasing.

I'm not unhappy having paid $0.99 for it... I'm not sure I want to pay $3 for the sequel when I have a lot of other $0.99 stuff to read. (If you note my purchase/review history, I obviously do follow up for many $3 sequels in various series, I'm just not convinced on this one at this point.)

I'm not sure how to review this book. There was a lot to like about it (well written, good action sequences), but it just didn't do it for me. Maybe I'll read it again in a few months and change my mind.
