Effective VMware virtualization storage planning and management has become crucial–but it can be extremely complex. Now, the leading VMware expert on storage completely demystifies the "black box" of vSphere storage and provides illustrated, step-by-step procedures for performing every key task associated with it. You’ll gain the deep understanding you need to make better storage decisions, solve problems, and keep problems from occurring in the first place.

Mostafa Khalil presents techniques based on years of personal experience helping customers troubleshoot storage in their vSphere production environments. With more experience than anyone else in the field, he combines expert guidelines, insights for better architectural design, best practices for both planning and management, common configuration details, and deep dives into both vSphere and third-party storage.

Storage Implementation in vSphere® 5.0 fully explains each storage connectivity choice and protocol supported by VMware, introduces Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA), and shows how to build on PSA with multipathing, failover, and ALUA. It thoroughly introduces Storage Virtualization Devices (SVDs) and VMDirectPath I/O, and shows how to drive powerful improvements in performance, flexibility, and manageability with VMFS 5 and VAAI.

  • Understanding how FC, FCoE, and iSCSI interact with VMware vSphere 5
  • Implementing specific VMware capabilities on storage hardware from each leading vendor
  • Avoiding, recognizing, and fixing misconfigurations and other problems
  • Using third-party MPIO plug-ins certified with vSphere 5 and PSA
  • Maximizing availability through multipathing and failover
  • Implementing fixed and round-robin multipathing on arrays with ALUA support
  • Monitoring and optimizing virtual storage performance
  • Managing vSphere-compatible file systems: VMFS and NFS
  • Taking full advantage of VMDirectPath I/O
  • Implementing heterogeneous storage configurations
  • Presenting abstracted storage through virtual disks and Raw Device Mappings (RDMs)
  • Using VMFS 5 to simplify management and improve scalability in large-scale environments
  • Sharing storage and migrating more easily across multiple VMware vSphere instances
  • Optimizing storage performance with VAAI-compliant devices

Mostafa Khalil, Senior Staff Engineer with VMware Global Support Services, specializes in storage integration for virtual environments. He has worked for VMware for 13 years and supported all VMware virtualization products since Workstation for Linux 1.0 beta. Khalil has worked on most enterprise storage vendors’ solutions and received engineering-level training for many of them. He has presented at every VMworld, and at VMware Partner Exchange, VMware User Group, and USENIX.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Incredibly Detailed Storage Information 9. Dezember 2012
Von Chris Wahl - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The book is filled with a treasure trove of historical knowledge that includes not only how storage (both as an industry and as it relates to VMware) evolved to what it is today, but why it evolved the way it did. You'll learn all about the VMFS file system and how to take advantage of it for all sorts of protocols and environments in both design and troubleshooting. This is simply a MUST HAVE book for anyone doing shared storage in VMware virtual environments as both reference material and a design aid, and will continue to be relevant long past the release of future vSphere 5.X products.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book has it all! 7. Februar 2013
Von J. T. Schreiner - Veröffentlicht auf
This is the storage book that I have been waiting for! Being relatively new to Storage/DataCenter, I've frustrated with with every other book and whitepaper because they either assume you are able to place things in context, or don't go into enough detail. This book satisfied all of my complaints with other materials. The author does an excellent job starting out with the context (and in some cases history behind how we got here in the first place) and delving into the material. I really like how the topics are covered from all different angles, the author showed us how we should accomplish tasks with the GUI and command line. It was very important to me that both were covered. It was also great the author included small bits of the storage vendor's material as well. Learning the VMWare part is important, and the focus of the book, but without the other side (storage vendor) you don't have the full picture. I was mainly looking for iSCSI info (which there was plenty of) but I ended up taking away a lot more useful knowledge. Like all the other reviewers, I consider this the definitive vSphere 5 storage book and would highly recommend anyone dealing with vSphere and SAN/NAS purchase this immediately.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good book for block-based information 11. Oktober 2013
Von Todd - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
This book contains extremely detailed information about block storage as it relates to vSphere. If you're running an environment consisting of FC, FCoE or iSCSI, this book will come in handy in endless ways.

If you're looking for information regarding the implementation, design or inner workings of file-based (NFS) storage as it relates to vSphere, this is where the book falls flat. There is a smattering of info on how to work with VAAI primitives for NFS, but beyond that, the entire subject of NFS-based storage is barely mentioned at all. If you are looking for a book to help you understand the inner workings of the file-based datastore and how that works in relation to vSphere, keep looking.

Von Q Raghib - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I would say that Storage design and implementation in vSpher 5 is a well-written and coherent book. It is an excellent handy reference guide for experienced professionals, a MUST have. Also, this book will help whoever is interested in attaining VCAP-DCD certification.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great resource 22. April 2013
Von MRR - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Well written. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to know storage front and back. The author gives a great primer on storage technology in general (so it's good for the beginner and it gets better from there! I don't see where anything was left out. I learn something new every time I pick this book up. Great job!
