5.0 von 5 Sternen COOKING WITH MARTHA! 2. Mai 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I grew up with "from scratch" cooking. Both my grandmother and my mother spent hours in the kitchen to produce their meals the only way they knew how--from scratch. This, of course, is how they've taught us children to cook. But don't we all have better things to do than spend hours in the kitchen kneading, waiting for the dough to rise, cutting the shortening into the flour until it looks like little peas? I know I do. I'm a writer working on my second novel. I'm involved with family and community. With spring finally here, I don't even want to be indoors, but want to go biking, hiking, and playing tennis with friends.

This is why cooking Martha Cheves's way has been joyfully liberating. In her cookbook, "STIR, LAUGH, REPEAT," she lists 100 recipes for cooks of all ages and varying experience. Many of her recipes are quick; all are easy and delectable! And she won't make you stand in the corner for using canned peas & carrots, and pre-made pie shells, as in her chicken pot pie. Her biscuits made with self-rising flour are light and fluffy, the secret ingredient being--surprise--MAYONNAISE! Anyone who can cook noodles can make her Tuna Melt Casserole. Sunday, I whipped up my favorite of her desserts, her wonderful Key Lime Pie for a family dinner. It took me all of five minutes to get the pie into the oven. STIR, LAUGH, REPEAT INDEED! And thank you, Martha, for unchaining me from the stove and for making cooking easy as well as just plain fun!

Along with her recipes, Martha gives you her life stories of how she discovered a recipe or when she first made a particular dish. These stories, along with her helpful hints, are sprinkled throughout her book. In this way, I've come to know Martha's family and many of the people in her life. Thank you, Martha, for sharing your recipes, your wisdom, and your joy in life!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Easy Recipes and a Personal Touch 27. Mai 2009
Von Debra Purdy Kong - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Broschiert
When it comes to creating recipes, I have little imagination so I turn to cookbooks for ideas. My problem with many of them, though, is that the recipes are either too complicated or the ingredients too hard to find. So it was with great pleasure that I discovered Stir, Laugh, Repeat by Martha A. Cheves. Her straightforward recipes reflect her southern U.S. background and use simple, affordable ingredients. Cheves provides a number of money-saving tips which is greatly appreciated.

If you love cheese and white chocolate (not together) you'll love this book because the author's a fan of both and features these items in several recipes. As a bonus, Cheves also offers personal stories and a practical tip with each recipe, which gives the book a personal touch.

My only quibble is that it'll be hard to keep the book open when I try some of the recipes, which is why I usually prefer coil bound cookbooks. Also, there are a couple of ingredients such as Parker House rolls that aren't available here in Canada so I'll have to find a substitute. Meanwhile, I really need to start on that banana pudding recipe!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Like a church recipe book with funny anecdotes 13. Oktober 2009
Von Joanna Daneman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Broschiert
The recipes in this book are the treasured kind of American home cooking you find in regional church cookbooks. (Artichoke chicken, fried pickles, chikin'n'dumplins, chicken-fried beef tips.) Note; not diet food. But these are great for covered-dish events or when nothing but "mommy-food" will soothe your jagged nerves.

The humor is genuine, the anecdotes are fun (my fave, using horse corn to make creamed corn.)

This book could be your secret recipe horde to impress the potluck crowd.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fast, Dependable Recipes with Humor and Tips for Busy People 22. Dezember 2010
Von Mary Deal - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

"Stir, Laugh, Repeat" by Martha A. Cheves is not only a great cookbook, it is a fun read. The first day I received the book, I perused it to find a recipe to sample. In reading, I found these recipes, some for all meals and snacks, easy and quick. A recipe that takes only one paragraph to tell how to throw all the ingredients together for a scrumptious dish is my kind of book. Then Martha gives a little history for each recipe about how that food was used in her own cooking at home. But that's not all. Following every recipe is a Tip for the cook. One of my favorites was:

"When my three kids were young, we would have a Mystery TV Dinner Night. Each night when I cooked dinner, before it went on the table, I would take a plastic sectioned plate and put a full serving of everything on the plate, wrap it in plastic wrap and then tightly wrap it in foil and put it into the freezer. On Mystery Night, everyone would go to the freezer and take out a dish. You couldn't peek. Each plate would be microwaved and that was your meal for the night. You may have country fried steak, spaghetti, fish, even chili. It was fun watching the kids open their meals. They were never disappointed because I would make sure it was filled with food they liked."

Martha Cheves knows how to feed her family and have fun, too, and now shares her recipes with us. Oh yes, the recipe I chose to make first was the Strawberry Nut Crunch. I made it with Macadamia nuts. It was so delightful, I will make it again, and enough of it for about 50 people at a big celebratory potluck. I'll also be taking this delightful book to share with others.

Review by Mary Deal, author of "The Tropics," "The Ka," the award winning "River Bones," and "Down to the Needle."

5.0 von 5 Sternen A delight 11. Dezember 2011
Von Georg - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

My wife and I were vacationing in the Hudson Valley recently and stopped at a quintessential northeastern town for lunch. Afterwards we browsed an antique store where we bought a very old and heavy wooden rolling pin. I thought at the time, what fascinating stories and recipes this antique must hold. Now I've some idea. "Stir, Laugh, Repeat" is a cookbook that delivers not only delicious snacks, meals and desserts, but stories behind them--real life events that contribute as much to the experience of preparing the meals as the recipes themselves. Martha Cheves has a refreshing sense of humor, a sweet lady--like having a favorite relative in the kitchen advising you. ("Chuck's Fruit Salad" is a quick fix and a favorite). "Stir, Lauch, Repeat" would make a nice stocking stuffer for anyone you know who'd enjoy a warm and friendly hand in the kitchen.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is the cookbook you've been waiting for 18. März 2010
Von Mary Kennedy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Broschiert
Like many cookbook collectors, I'm always on the lookout for a new cookbook and I've found it in Stir, Laugh, Repeat. The range of recipes is enormous, and all of the selections are fun, easy and a joy to prepare. I can see that the Coconut Loaf Cake is going to be a family favorite, with Pina Colada cake also at the top of the list. This is a fun book and the recipes are terrific, I also love the comments that Martha includes. She offers little stories about her experiences making the recipes, the reactions of the taste testers, etc. Whether you're looking for something fabulous to take to a party (Coconut Ice Box Sheet Cake)or a quick recipe for Sunday breakfast (Monkey Bread) you are bound to find something here to delight you! I had tried several of Martha's recipes on her website and just had to have this book.
