Kurzbeschreibung

So. What exactly IS a power bubble? That question will torment all five of Steef’s mages. They knew, when they agreed to train the boy, that the task would be dangerous. And puzzling. There are no parches for training a Clear.

And he doesn’t pulse his power, like a good wizard should. He makes bubbles! Whoever heard of bubbles!? Probably the same people who’ve heard of one wizard with all seven Colors! No one!

And there they lay. All over the ground in this remote valley. Blue bubbles. White bubbles. Even (shudder) Black bubbles. Can’t leave ‘em there. Can’t pop ‘em.

But if one of the massive HornCats, whose valley this is, happens to trip over a bubble and die, the King of the Cats will expel all of the ‘two-legs’. Or worse. And there’s no where else to go, for hiding is why they came here in the first place. Hiding from the Guilds, who would abuse this boy if they could.

Strange place. Strange power. Strange beasts. Even Steef’s staff is strange. But all five of these Masters of magic, love that boy. And they’re going to protect him if they can. From the Guilds and the Cats… and himself.

They try not to think about what happens if he does grow up. Because he might just want to come out of that valley. And then bubbles of Power will be the least of their problems.

Synopsis

Steef's world is tranquil and idyllic...to Steef. Waterspills and flutterbyes. Wondrous beasties, magical bees and one amazing tree. His five Masters have contrived that peace for him at great risk. The world they know is growing dark. Politics and intrigue rule. Reality is defined by the Guilds, whose purpose once was to serve, but who now serve only themselves. The Guilds would destroy the child if they could, for Steef possesses an unheard of ability to wield all seven Powers. If he reaches manhood, the Guilds will be his. Steef's only defense is secrecy, and the only secret place left is a remote valley ruled by the long neglected HornCats. The HornCats are truly noble beasts, unfortunately all other creatures to them are...tasty. To his Masters, Steef is even more frightening. Eager. Warm. Relentlessly curious. A perfect little boy...who can kill with a sneeze. Yet they must train him! The valley will not be tranquil for the Masters. If they succeed in maintaining their confidentiality, survive the HornCats and keep Steef from blowing himself up, then Steef might reach his eighteenth birthday. And he just might want to come out of that valley.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable and Entertaining 22. Januar 2007
Von Margaret P. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
"Sticks & Stones" is a fantasy novel, in a world where most people have one of seven types of magic, and everyone else has no magical ability at all. A magical healer (A--) discovers an incredibly powerful baby (S--) with all seven types of magic -- where previously, everyone thought it impossible to have even two. Also, this baby's talent is significantly stronger than that of anyone else alive. Worried that guild officials might use this child for evil, A-- and S-- (and S--'s parents) go to live in the seculsion of a trecherous valley filled with giant cats. With the help of a small group of powerful mages, S-- grows to adulthood. Meanwhile, corrupt guild officials turn into dictators, and threaten all S-- holds dear.

"Sticks & Stones" is a light hearted novel, with a meandering feel at times, often exploring S--'s growing powers. The valley cats are delightful. This book will appeal very much to people who enjoy books by L.E. Modesitt. Also like Mercedes Lackey, but without all of the casual sex and liberal preaching. This book will especially appeal to sensitive readers who abhor dark and depressing topics; and anyone who enjoys a main character powerful enough to give their opponents what they deserve.

This novel is much better than most mass printing Fantasy novels I've read, and well worth the higher purchase price of a print-on-demand novel. The first chapter can be read online, at the publisher's (iUniverse) web site.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sticks and Stones by Norm Thabit 20. September 2003
Von Chilson Patton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Every once in a while, a book comes along that goes beyond entertainment, and elevates and involves the reader in all aspects of the story as well as the outcome. Sticks and stones by Norm Thabit is such a book. It starts softly, by with such promise and possibility in the first chapter, that sparks our imagination, while at the same time building a foundation for a world we have never seen before, but have no problem relating to. Once the foundation is laid, this author Delivers so many surprises and innovations that before you know it, you have reached the point where you "can't put it down." This world's inhabitants and their, to say the least, distinctions, are so engaging and fully formed, that identifying with them is as natural as real life. Social commentary and a Great Purpose are so carefully woven into this novel, that you're pulling for our young phenomenon before you know it. Creatures, new to literature, are here also, and have their own social structures that mesh together in this story as natural as breathing. And they're not the enemy. If you want to be carried away. If you want to explore and identify with a very believable world, peopled with characters both flawed and noble, make this a MUST READ. No matter where your interests lie, this book is a future classic with style and power and is a pure pleasure to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sticks and Stones by Norm Thabit 19. September 2003

I am not much of a fantansy fan but my husband raved about this book so I had to read it. The author writes in such a way that it grabs your attention. The reader cannot help but be facinated by the hero. Although it is written about an alternative world, it is so thoroughly explained that the reader begins to see the world in which the characters live. I couldn't put it down.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great fantasy 30. Januar 2014

No elves, enchanted artifacts, quest or party of young people struggling through the wilds to battle the Lord of Evil. So no formulas, just a pleasant book that happened to deal with magic. I read right through it and that is rare. Most fantasy books never get finished.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Read, and re-read 25. April 2012

Some stories deserve to be read more than once. This is one of those books! I read this one several years ago in paper, and re-read in that format another time or two. I enjoyed it so much I gifted several sci-fantasy fans I know with their own paper copies. So happy to find it in Kindle format ; I've read it again. Overjoyed to find its sequel just noww available in Kindle store too (Sticky Stingers).

Power can be wielded to good causes or bad ; with humility or arrogance. And even those without apparent power have the means to work for good or bad. This is that story. Meet the good -- Steef and his Guild, and loath the bad. Read this book!
