Kurzbeschreibung

Which is more important? The perfect cup of coffee or the perfect date? Why can’t we have both? Blaine is an Isherwood reading, photo taking, obsessive compulsive coffee barista who steals money out of public fountains and who can’t find a date. Obsessed with the number 32, his age, Blaine blames his lack of companionship as the reason for his habitual acts. Every day is timed and in sync to Blaine’s magic number!
When his best friend Sallie sets him up on a blind date, the overanxious caffeine slinger becomes convinced that the new man in his life will cure his compulsions. When Blaine discovers they have nothing in common, complications quickly ensue. Soon, Blaine’s artsy tattooed coworker, Auden, tells him about a local photography contest, and Blaine sets out to capture a winning snapshot. But just as Blaine thinks he has his illness conquered, his perfect unvarying world spirals out of control.

Stealing Wishes Almost Stole My Heart... 15. Februar 2012
Von SDR Marla Survived Sipping Champagne Now - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I was extremely confused when I started to read this book to see that so many people in reviews were using words like "light", "easy", "breezy" etc as a way to describe this story. For me it was a more difficult read. Maybe because it wasn't what I was expecting at first- I was looking for it to be more about wishes and less about relationships unless a wish had led to one, somehow lighter in overall tone. Possibly it may be too that this was a bit far outside of my normal reading zones, was an area I hadn't ventured into too much before and I needed time to grow comfortable. The words that entered my mind while reading were more along the lines of poignant, moving, at times maddening, comic, sometimes dark but always compelling!

Meeting Blaine, Sallie, Edward, Auden, Charlie & Randy was for me like meeting a new group of people for the first time at a party. Some you instantly like, others it takes you a bit longer to warm up to, some you merely tolerate because that's what adults are supposed to do and some even a year later you feel you still really don't know at all. I instantly felt myself drawn toward Auden & Sallie. These were the 2 people who gained my interest right from the start and kept me turning pages until I'd reached the end. Blaine took me longer to warm up to maybe because he was more flawed and felt like a darker character so I needed to get to know more about him to let him deeper in. I never really liked Edward or Randy and Charlie was the one from the group I didn't feel I really got to know.

This book captivated me and as I said it almost stole my heart. Just almost. That's because by the halfway point I was wishing so hard for Blaine to cut and run, see what was so clearly to me right under his nose and make a good/solid decision for once that it about broke my heart when he only took a half hearted stab at it; then let it slide away easily like he had so many other things in his life.

Thank you Shannon for writing this story.

A Wish Fulfilled 21. April 2012
Von Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
The main character Blaine describes himself as a camera, shutter open, recording moments of time. He marvels, "...at how many people see beauty in the exact same things." all the while looking for the unique shots that make one ask questions. At times he appears to be most analytical and yet, like all humans at other times is at the mercy of his own blind-spot and self-delusions.

The reader is privy to both his obsessive compulsive habits and his self-awareness of them and thoughts about their origin. He is looking for connections, while holding himself aloof. He is unapologetically gay; a barista who does not define himself by his occupation. Photography is his hobby and yet he is always looking through the camera lens, figuratively or real. He evolves with his story.

I did not find this book to be a light, easy read. I did really enjoy reading it and being introduced to Blaine, Sallie, Edward, Auden, Charlie, Randy and The Latte Da. I look forward to the promised sequel.

Well-written with great poise 3. April 2012
Von V S Williams - author of Slave - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
In Stealing Wishes, obsessive compulsive barista, Blaine, allows us to delve into his secret passions. For one thing, he's a furtive photographer. Not only does he use a camera, he IS a camera, cataloguing the quiet details of people's lives. In this diary-like chronicle, he's a recorder of life - his and others. The details are minute and mundane, though not mediocre.

Most modern fiction I seem to read these days is about people who aspire, rise, strive, aim to fulfil and conquer. But this book is about someone who holds still and observes. Through his lens, he's seeking moments of beauty, though it is beauty of the most day-to-day variety - "a home run, a first step, the perfect catch " - as I was reading this I found myself wondering, why these little things? Its style reminded me of the scene in the film American Beauty where a carrier bag is filmed dancing in the wind.

The obsessive compulsive nature of Blaine is expressed in the style of the writing too, which I felt was just right. It was sometimes clinical, very detailed and came across more as an observational diary than a 'standard' novel. The stillness and lack of pace in parts felt very appropriate, but don't be put off - this is not a boring book, the pages will keep turning!

I found myself very involved in the story. Blaine is charming yet infuriating - I kept wanting to yell at him to stop being so passive. At one point Blaine starts dating a domineering creep and, oh for the longest time, he seems to be the only one who doesn't see it. It was so frustrating! I'm not going to say whether or not there was a happy ending, but it was certainly the right ending.

Anyway, Stealing Wishes: well-written with great poise, and I really enjoyed it.

V.S. Williams (author of 'Slave')
Full disclosure: Shannon Yarbrough kindly left a review for my first novel, Slave, in his capacity as a reviewer for LL Book Reviews. I later requested a review copy of Stealing Wishes as it sounded like something I would be interested in. At the time, I did warn him that (for good or bad) any review I might leave would be my honest opinion - and it is.
