Good overview of a complex opening,

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Starting Out: The Ruy Lopez (Everyman Chess) (Taschenbuch)
This book gives a pretty good overview of one the major chess openings. Starting with the third move alternatives like the Berlin defense and the Jaenisch gambit in the first chapter, all major variations are covered in the next chapters. These include the exchange variation, the open defense, Archamgel, Moller, the marshall and the closed lines.Of course, this book provides an introduction and not a complete coverage of all variations. For example, minor variations like the Bird defense are only covered with one game, which gives you an idea how to play these lines. Of course, at lower club level, these openings are not so rare. Actually, in my experience, these rare lines are less rare than the main lines! So, at a certain point you might need an additional book, or a database. Reading other reviews about books from the "starting out" series, it strikes me that some people complain that these books do not give complete coverage. In my opinion they do not understand the concept of the "starting out" series. It is meant to give you an overview of the strategies occurring in the specific opening. It would be unwise playing the sharp forcing lines using only these books. Actually, this is also the message which John Shaw gives(and Gallagher in "starting out the Caro Kann"). In conclusion: These type of books are primarily aimed for players with an Elo rating of less than 2000. If you are interested in learning the Ruy Lopez, this is an excellent introduction. After reading it, try out the opening a few times and when you have found your favorite line, buy a more extensive book covering that line.
