Amazon.de

Written less than 15 years after the end of the second world war, as anti-Communist paranoia was reaching fever-pitch in the United States, this book is very much a product of its time. Originally planned for a juvenile audience, Starship Troopers has become a classic of hard science fiction, albeit a controversial one. Heinlein creates a future society where citizenship must be earned through military service, and although there are a number of exciting scenes of battle, much of the book is taken up with an exploration of the philosophical ramifications of such a society. The book discusses the necessity of warfare to moral development and the importance of beating children in order to make them into good citizens. Heinlein's political theory is quite unpalatable and occasionally irresponsible. However, the book is frequently exciting, and the details of the society are fascinating. This is an entertaining and thought-provoking book, but perhaps not best-suited for use as a political manifesto. The most interesting feature of Starship Troopers is its fascinating glimpse into America's struggle for a post-war identity, told as a heroic tale of interstellar conflict.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It is all about choices 25. Juni 2009
Format:Taschenbuch
When I read Starship Troopers for the first time, I fell in love with this book. I even went out to get the original text, as I had read it in German.

Back in the day, the movie did not exist and thus any controversial discussion was done by people who had read the book.

At first I was entranced with Juan Rico's story. To me it was obvious what kind of trap Heinlein had set with his description of society.

Then I found people discussing the book. I found people discussing the implications of Heinlein's socio-political criticism.
Frankly, they talked about fascistic approaches, totalitarianism and mostly of militarism.
My eyes opened in wonder. Had they read another book?
I read a book, in which we were led to believe, that violence can be controlled but never prohibited. What ever we try.
I read a book, where it was stated that the single reason for a specific societies continued survival is "because it works." That no other reason can be given.
I read a book, that clearly states that a "veteran" is no better than anyone else.
No glorification of the military, despite that which was done in the 50s and is done still nowadays.

However I heave read a book, which forces us to ask the one question we dare not ask aloud. "What have WE done for our right to vote?"

This is a Si-Fi book which still points to the questions we should ask about our society.
And it is a pretty good action story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A SciFi Classic for a Reason 3. Oktober 2008
Format:Taschenbuch
A science fiction classic that bravely combines space adventure and mind-boggling social critique. Controversial is the nicest thing that it has been called, but in my eyes it's one of the best novels out there and definitely one of my favorites. The story of 18-year old Rico who joines the mobile infantry, interspersed with chapters about the social system and it's historic foundations (i.e. our society), is a not so typical growing of age story. It's about camerady, about living another day, about meeting old friends and being proud of them. It's about loss and how to keep walking. Somehow it portrays the best of human qualities in so very few words. Characters are introduced only to die shortly after, but you still care for them and even if there is no time for mourning, there's no way they're forgotten. And somehow it manages to end on an upbeaten note.
Of course there are many faults that could be exploited: One could say that it's telling people to join the army, the society it portrays has been called fascist and there's plenty more. Truth is that you could probably read it that way if you'd be so inclined. I think that it stresses the free will too much to be any of that, but why don't you give it a try and see for yourself?
For those that have seen the movie and didn't like it, give the book a try. The movie is more like a persiflage of the book than anything else. For those that liked the movie, the book is so much more and I'm sure you'd love it.

Ask not what the nation can do for you, ask what you can do for your nation.
JFK was not a suspect for fascist messages - and this novel should not be either.
Star ship troopers is a classic science fiction story, a bit outdated today, but more than that in this novel Heinlein dealt with issues of personal stamina and courage ("die trying is the proudest human thing"), of weigthed voting rights (in contrast to an undiscriminate one-man-one-vote system where you have to do just nothing for your nation and yet decide about its future), of the duties of responsible citizens, of self-sacrifice and of optimistic world-views in the face of imminent threat and danger.
The movie made on the basis of this book is a joke in some ways - the book is good and upbeat and worth reading. In my view one of Heinlein` s best.

5.0 von 5 Sternen THE classic of military Science Fiction 5. August 2009
Format:Taschenbuch
In the future-USA, democracy as we know it has been abolished. The only people allowed to vote or hold a political office are military veterans because these are people willing to give their life for the safety of the state and its citizens. But nobody is forced to join the military, quite the opposite: There are more recruits than the army actually needs, so they make the training particularly rigorous and weed out the majority of would-be soldiers.
Juan / Johnny Rico has just turned 18 and finished school when he decides to join the military. He doesn't have a good reason but does it because his friend joins, too. Only he's not fit for anything but the mentally least demanding job left - he finds himself in the infantery and has to go through the harshest training imaginable. In this he finds his calling, as well as good friends and finally a true purpose when earth is attacked by aliens called 'bugs' because that's what they look like. And it seems like they're winning. It' up to people like Johnny to protect and save mankind by going to the bugs' planets and fighting the viscious creatures on their own turf...
The novel follows Juan / Johnny from his training days through a few battles and his training as an officer. The future military and society are fascinating, but I also get the impression that many of the details of military life are timeless. Since Heinlein himself was in the Navy for a while, I'd say he knew what he was writing about and managed to bring it to life extremely well. The book is at once highly entertaining and has a surprising depth with its social criticism and topics like civic duty, responsibility and honour.
