If you enjoy the extraordinary stories of Diana Gabaldon, Karen Marie Moning, and the paranormal works of Nora Roberts...

THE STARRY CHILD is a spell-binding, unforgettable story of a star-crossed love that survives through the ages, a tale as timeless as the mystic Scottish legends and forbidden lovers among the heather of long ago. Yet it is as vibrant and alive in the present day as those whose fates now hang in the balance. It's the story of a young mother who learns that her own destiny is forever tied to a man she hardly knows, a man of the Highlands. Yet in her heart, she realizes that he's someone she has always known. And at the center of it all lies an undying love held in secret by a little girl.

Since the tragic death of her father, eight-year-old Sasha Nielson has not spoken a word. Her mother, Rainey, has taken her to doctors and therapists, but medical science has not found the cause or the cure for Sasha’s silence. There are days when her behavior is baffling, even potentially dangerous, particularly during lightning storms. The authorities threaten to take Sasha away and time is running out.

One man sees beyond Sasha’s mysteries. Matt Macinnes is a gifted professor of ancient languages, a man who senses that there is a key to Sasha’s silence, that she may in fact be guarding a secret of such profound and terrifying dimensions that it staggers the imagination. Only Matt can get Sasha to whisper her secrets, secrets she reveals to him in Old Gaelic, a language she has never had access to. Could this All-American little girl truly be carrying around the restless soul of an exiled Celtic queen of old?

More than that, Matt finds himself drawn to Rainey's amazing strength and beauty. He feels ties to her that he can't explain. But her protective instincts toward little Sasha have built a fortress around her heart, a barrier that only hard-won trust and absolute proof of his worthiness can tear down. He is devoted to both mother and daughter, but the mystery of Sasha's secret destiny must be solved before he can reveal the passionate truth that burns within him.

Rainey has fought to keep Sasha safe from the cruelty and ignorance of the world. She has tried everything to help Sasha overcome her silence, but in the end, Sasha's wordlessness has prevailed and stress and exhaustion are Rainey's constant companions. She can't fix things by herself, but she doesn't dare trust anyone else for fear others have a dark agenda that could lead to the loss of Sasha. Matt is very tempting. Aside from the fact that he has an almost mystical kind of attraction about him, it would be very easy to simply hand him her heart and her impossible responsibilities and let him take over for a while. Added to that, Sasha adores him at first sight. But is Matt only helping them in order to earn himself professional recognition and a hefty university grant? How can she deny being drawn to him with every breath she takes as if she has known and loved him for a thousand years? How can she dare to trust him when not only her heart is at stake, but Sasha's heart is in the balance as well?

    4.0 von 5 Sternen A little schizophrenic 8. Januar 1999
    Von Ein Kunde
I don't quite have Sorcha's background, but I do agree that from a technical standpoint things could have been done differently and better concerning dialogue, characterization and the amount of gratuitous romantic interest. If the romantic interest is intrinsic to the plot, then Hanna could have made it more clear.
That said, the premise and plot are riveting. I couldn't put this one down. When I saw at the end that there will be a sequel, I had to flip back to the front to realize that with a just-published book, the sequel will probably be several months in coming (Darn it!). With effort, in her next book Lynn Hanna can correct some of the problems she has in The Starry Child so her work can get the acclaim her imagination already deserves.

The storyline of this book has so much promise, and I am glad to see that there will be a sequel. Insofar as a plot goes, I loved the ideas even if the execution landed a little short of its mark. I really WANT to give this book a good review, but find that I am stuck at the 3 star rating. Ms. Hanna goes into fairly good depth with the personalities of the charaters, explaining why they were the way they were and I appreciate that. The only problem is, that it seemed like she did so at the expense of plot detail. Things happened so quickly that I almost felt cheated. It seemed to me that everything was preordained, so why bother? I am looking forward to her next novel, but maybe it can be a little better executed...?

2.0 von 5 Sternen Good Premise, diasappointing execution 24. November 1998
    Von Ein Kunde
I would have every reason to like this book, as it correlates closely to my own life: I work at Stanford, I study Scots Gaelic and all things Celtic, and I have traveled many times to the Highland locales in the book..... So, imagine my disappointment when all the characters are painfully stock, all the dialogue is trite (yes, even the Gaelic bits), and the potential of the great fantasy line of the story is swamped in every romance cliche imaginable.
This could have been truly riveting, given the subject matter, but the execution was far below the mark. Hopefully, in the rest of the trilogy, Hanna will develop the potential of her characters and storyline in a more skillful manner.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Overall, a good plot and well written story. 13. März 1999
    Von Ein Kunde
When I read the synopsis, I thought this book would be interesting because of my love for all things old. Myths, legends, anything historical, I have a fascination in. In that field, I was not disappointed. The only thing that could be improved in this story is making it a bit more clear. At times, I felt the plot was just whizzing by and wished there were more detail. The ending also came as a bit of a surprise, but I like surprises :) The romantic aspect of the novel was also a nice touch.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A book for all hopeless romantics! 17. Oktober 1998
    Von Ein Kunde
This book had me to the point where I was feeling everything that the characters were feeling. I couldn't put it down! The characters were so really in such a fantastic story line which made the plot that much more believable. The fact the heroine was not just a dependant, selfish woman also made the book even better. The walls the characters had to overcome gave the plot a deeper effect. I enjoyed this book imensely and plan on "spreading the word"!

    5.0 von 5 Sternen A Fantastic Fairy Tale!!! 19. April 1999
    Von Ein Kunde
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! It was so refreshing to read such a creative romantic modern day fairy tale with a twist! I look forward to her next book! What a refreshing way to tell a story. After reading other reviews the only thing I agree on is the fact that I do wish the book had gone into some more detail to make it longer. I only say this selfishly because I didn't want it to end! GREAT BOOK!
