For starters, I have read all StarCraft novels up to this point, among them, Queen of Blades was by far the best. Now to this one.
In the prologue it starts off in the jungle world of Tyrador where Nova is seeking the 'murderer' of her family. After the prologue the book explains Nova's past and the 'how' of the murder and her affiliation to the ghost program.
The novel begins in her youth. At the same Arcturus Mengsk wants to take over the terran worlds and build up his Terran Dominion. Though this conquering is taking place during the whole story, you don't get much info about it. The main foucs is on the girl, her thoughts and the fight inside herself.
The first time Nova uses her psychic powers is, as her family is getting killed by one of their 'loyal' servants. She gets so furious that with only one thought ( though unintentional ) she kills everyone in the whole building and disappears afterwards into the Gutter, the part of Tarsonis where the poor and the criminals live. There another main character is introduced, he is called Fagin. Fagin is the ruler of the Gutter and so to speak the 'Lord' of everything there. It comes to his attention that there is a teep ( a person who is able to use his/her psychic powers ), in this case Nova, in his quarter of the city. He offers her a deal: working for him. As Nova refuses he lets her go, knowing she will return to him one day, but until then she is going to suffer he thinks.
During that time, a confederate special agent, Malcolm Kelerchian, starts the search for Nova, as his boss ordered him to find her and get her into the Ghost program.
The book continues with those two seperate storylines, until they cross themselves close to the end of the book. What happens in the Gutter after Nova refuses the offer and Kelerchian finally finds Nova...well I leave that up to you to read :)
Now for my personal commentary.
One of the positive sides of this novel is definately the description of the characters. You get to know everything about everyone, the fears, the hopes and the feelings. The characters seem almost as if they could exist in reality. Another pluspoint is the story, though it starts off a bit boring with that whole family stuff, it gets more and more interesting to the end, which is good.
Now to the negative sides. People who don't know much about slang words, including me , might find it difficult to follow the plot at certain times, because the people in the Gutter, like Fagin and his lieutenants, use that a lot. Besides I would have liked to read how Nova had been 'resocialized', how her feelings and thoughts developed during that phase, but alas it was not written down, which is a bit sad.
Concluding my opinion about this book, it is definately worth the money. Especially for those who are eager to get to know things about Nova and her past for the upcoming " StarCraft: Ghost " - game ... whenever it may come out though. In comparison to Queen of Blades I can say that this one comes close to it, but does not conquer the title " best SC novel " as the story does not get my attention from the start and the end is too much cut off.
Still, I am eagerly awaiting the next SC novel.
