Tales from the New Republic ist der mittlerweile fünfte Kurzgeschichtensammelband des Star Wars-Universums und damit nach Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales of the Bounty Hunters, Tales from Jabba's Palace und Tales of the Empire auch der vorerst letzte. Seinem Titel entsprechend präsentiert dieser Sammelband zahlreiche Geschichten aus dem galaktischen Bürgerkrieg und dem Aufbau der Neuen Republik.
Neben zahlreichen eher unbekannten Autoren sind auch Timothy Zahn und Michael Stackpole vertreten und bringen mit ihren Geschichten etwas vom klassischen Star Wars-Flair in den Band. So erzählen beide in der gemeinsamen Produktion "Interlude at Darknell" die Geschichte von General Bel Ilbis Überlaufen zur Rebellion und Ysanne Isards Aufstieg zur Geheimdienstchefin. Neben dieser Gemeinschaftsproduktion beweist Timothy Zahn in seiner eigenen Kurzgeschichte "Jade Solitaire" erneut dass er von allen Star Wars-Autoren immer noch den besten Zugang zu ihr hat und erklärt wie Mara zu ihrem Schiff der Jades Feuer gekommen ist.
Insgesamt beinhaltet der Sammelband 11 Kurzgeschichten die von 1 Jahr vor der schicksalhaften Schlacht um Yavin bis 17 Jahre danach reichen und so schon fast ein Bild der Rebellion von ihren Anfängen bis zur Blütezeit der Neuen Republik bieten. Dabei sind die Geschichten auch nicht auf eine Sichtweise beschränkt sondern bevölkern das Star Wars-Universum mit allerlei illustren Gestalten, die oft nicht eindeutig auf der Seite der einen oder anderen Partei stehen und manchmal einfach nur ihren Weg durch die Galaxis gehen wollen.
Was man natürlich bedenken sollte ist dass unterschiedliche Autoren auch sehr unterschiedliche Stile pflegen und mit Ausnahme Zahn und Stackpoles die meisten nur zur zweiten Garnitur gehören. So sind auch die enthaltenen Kurzgeschichten nicht immer Perlen, auch wenn man schon einige finden kann.
Fazit:
Für Fans des Expanded Universe schon alleine aufgrund der beiden (kanonischen) Geschichten Timothy Zahns und Michael Stackpoles ein Muss, darüber hinaus bietet der Sammelband noch eine Vielzahl interessanter und sehr unterschiedlicher Geschichten unbekannter Autoren.

I've always enjoyed the Tales' books. I love reading Star Wars books, and just can't find the time to read a whole novel without starting something else. All of the Tales' books give you a good enough dose of Star Wars stories to keep making you want to learn more about other books and authors. That is one more wonderful thing about Tales' books. You can figure out which author is too your liking, and which ones are too advanced in the Star Wars lingo that you have no idea what they're talking about in their stories. In a few books, I can read the first paragraph and say to myself, 'What the heck is this story about? Whats this guy talking about? Whats that word mean?'. I myself have found Paul Danner to be great for new readers of Star Wars books. I really got caught up in both of his stories in Tales From The New Republic. He writes exactly how I would want to, and you know exactly what this author is saying in his stories. If you're new to Star Wars books, and want to get an idea of what the authors are like, check out Tales From The new Republic as well as other great Tales' books. I know many people have said bad things about this book, but there is nothing I can find wrong with it. it may not be one of the greatest, but is one worth checking out.
