Sort of funny and fairly bloody, but not bloody enough to be a caricature of violence, Jabba the Hutt: The Art of the Deal is probably one of the more lackluster Dark Horse titles. Bringing together four previously published comics--The Gaar Suppoon Hit, The Hunger of Princess Nampi, The Dynasty Trap, and Betrayal--this collection is an exercise in Jabba worship, a worthy pursuit to be sure but one deserving of more inspired hands. True to its title, the plot line revolves around Jabba's byzantine wheeling and dealing, but the clumsy writing and cartoony art end up making the Hutt look more silly than sinister. The Gaar Suppoon Hit
Jabba finds himself bartering with Garr Suppoon, rumored to be an absolute demon at the negotiating table. There's a valuable lesson to be learned here: in a deal with the demon, you can always refuse. In a deal with Jabba, it's not advised.
The Hunger of Princess Nampi
Jabba has an old saying: if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em out! And that's just what he attempts to do when he encounters an unexpected nemesis on his journey through the galaxy. But he may have to part with something more personal than his precious spice if he's going to close this deal!
The Dynasty Trap
Jabba has a hot freighter on his hands and he's looking to unload it, quickly and discreetly. Enter Cabrool Nuum, a second-hand ship trader whose reputation for discretion is as long as his many years in the business. Unfortunately for Jabba, the years seem to have caught up with Cabrool, and his murderous offspring have taken advantage of the old man's dotage, just as they plan to take advantage of Jabba's impending arrival!
Betrayal
Everyone hopes to get a big break someday, move up to the top seat in their line of work. But when that line of work is intergalactic crime, you've got to make your own breaks. Bib Fortuna, Jabba's loyal lieutenant, has plotted a slave revolt against the Hurt. We've seen how Jabba handles negotiations -- now we'll see how he handles Betrayal.

Although the cartoonish look (very reminiscent of the Star Wars Early Adventures by the same artist who created Magnus-Robot Warrior (I forget his name!)) is off-putting at first, the bizarre humour as well as the portrayal of Jabba as sort of an intergalactic Sydney Greenstreet (think "Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca") make this collection quite amusing, if not outstanding.

Surprisingly good

When I first heard of this comic, I was less than thrilled to read it. In fact, I didn't even pick it up until a good five years after it came out. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised.
Writing a series of adventures from Jabba's point of view is no mean feat, but the authors do a superb job. Jabba is presented as true to his movie vision (more so in A New Hope Special Edition than Return of the Jedi, but these are supposed to be his early days), and the adventure and action are very Jabba-ish. More importantly, there are some real sci-fi elements, which are sometimes lacking in other SW adventures.
Basically, this comic series was an excellent recapture of the SW comics that came out back in the days when SW was young, both in theme and artwork. This is a good, short, fun read, and a nice addition to the Star Wras universe.

first off i dont mean to knock this TPB. it was quite fun to read... and gave me a few good laughs.... my problem with it is that the dialogue is really campy and cheesy. the premise is that jabba is going around robbing people (the art of the deal is the title... the deal is that he rips you off... so he always wins... get it?? lol) The art reminds me of something that i drew when i was day dreaming and doodleing in grade school. to make a long story short... but it for $1.54... but dont pay much more for it... the end
