The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons is definitely the least essential and worst of all of the guides. Instead of going into the culture and ecology of the planets like it should have, it simply tells us the story of whatever adventure our heroes had there. We get that from reading the novels! This book would have been so much neater if it had told us something at all about life on these planets.
We don't even get a neat map of the planets -- instead, a tiny black and white globe that isn't helpful, with a 1"x3" little inset map of the area we have heard most about in the books. Beneath that is a little illustration of a couple of people from that planet, most of them pretty bad and unhelpful. And then we get some more bad pictures of some native flora and fauna and some corny captions beneath them.
This book is quite a waste of time and money!

i love the designs and matt-paintings of lucas-arts, which were done to visualize the planets and locations of the StarWars-movies. i hoped to find them here as a collection. but none of that. there is just some unneccessary informations of the plant, a black/white pic of some inhabitants, a very gross black/white sketch of the landscape - and not more.
i was VERY DISSAPPOINTED to say the least.

..., dann hätte er einen Knochen bekommen - würde mein ehemaliger Englischlehrer sagen. Tja, hat er aber nicht. Dieses (inzwischen schon recht alte) Kompendium zu den Planeten und Monden (und sonstigen Gebilden (Anoth)) führt zu vielen Schauplätzen der Star Wars Saga und des Erweiterten Universums. Dieser "Essential Guide" gehört zur ersten Generation und wird am 18. August durch den "Essential Atlas" - der zur dritten Generation gehört - abgelöst. Das war/ist auch dringend notwendig, womit wir beim ersten meiner zwei Hauptkritikpunkte wären: mangelnde Aktualität. Inzwischen ist dieses Werk ämlich schon derartig veraltert, das es kaum mehr als "essential" gelten kann. Sämtliche Welten der Prequels fehlen - abgesehen von Coruscant und Kashyyyk deren Abbildungen nur sehr entfernt an das erinnern, was wir später in der neuen Trilogie zusehen bekamen - und dementsprechend auch zahlreiche Planeten des Erweiterten Universums, die in den letzten Jahren von Bedeutung waren. Die geschichtlichen Angaben sind oftmals überholt oder unvollständig und somit völlig aus dem Kontext gerissen. Zweiter Kritikpunkt: die Illustrationen, denn das Cover ist eine glatte Lüge. Die schönen bunten Bildchen, die einem da vorgehalten werden, kann man im Buch nämlich lange suchen. Auf 200 Seiten keine einzige farbliche Abbildung. Und damit nicht genug, denn außerdem sind die Abbildungen auch noch lächerlich einfach gestrickt - detaillos und oftmals grausam klischeehaft - da sieht man furchterregende Bestien, strahlende, schlanke "Schönheiten" und muskelbepackte Helden, aber wo sind die normalen Einwohner des Planeten? Wen stört es da schon noch, dass auf Myrkr neuerdings Tannen wachsen. Kommen wir zum Schluss noch zu den spärlich gesäten Stärken. Die Begleittexte sind (abgesehen von Überholtheit) informativ und man bekommt Abbildungen einiger sonst vernachlässigter Welten zu Gesicht - z.B. Kuat oder Mon Calamari. Zudem bietet das Buch einige Übersichten.
Fazit:
Ich kann nur hoffen, das der "Essential Atlas" bedeutend besser wird. Denn dieses Werk ist farblos, überholt und in Zeiten von Wookiepedia nicht mehr zeitgemäß.

This book is good but it doesn't say enough about the planets. Most of it is about their involvement in Star Wars

This book has it all!!
From Alderain to Dathmorir, from Kashyyk to Mrlsst, this book has them all. It tells you the species, language, system, and points of interest on a given planet.(Except Earth)

Definitely worth the money. This book is the best out of the "Essential Guides" books. A must by for all Star Wars fans!!!

This is by far one of the best StarWars books ever made.

Great new planets and other cool places.
I think this book has a very interesting veriaty of planets, moons, and asteroids. The pictures are very detailed, and the places histories are amazing.
