In Soldier for the Empire, writer William Dietz and painter Dean Williams have accomplished something rare among the numerous spinoffs of the Star Wars films: a story that captures the essence of Star Wars while charting new territory in terms of character development.

The story is a simple one. Like Luke Skywalker, Kyle Katarn is a young farm boy who dreams of the stars. But for Kyle, the way off his home world is through the Imperial Military Academy, not through a Jedi mentor. Just as Kyle reaches the end of his training in a vicious firefight on a Rebel-held asteroid, his father, Morgan, is killed in an Imperial attack. As he learns the truth behind his father's death, Kyle is awakened to a terrifying vision of the Empire that he has grown to respect, and he suddenly finds himself working for the Rebels to steal plans for the newly completed Death Star.

By integrating Kyle's tale into the actual plot of Star Wars, Deitz makes his novel especially relevant for Star Wars fans. But what really drives Soldier for the Empire are the grim details that bring the war to life. Dietz's vision of the Empire recounts the awesome discipline of Nazi Germany, and his descriptions of Dark Jedi Jerec are reminiscent of the twisted minds that must always stand behind organized evil. At the same time, by going inside the Empire (and into the psyches of Storm Troopers), Dietz reveals the seductive power of that evil. Dean Williams's award-winning paintings are a perfect complement to the story, creating a cinematic life for the text. Kyle's tale continues in Rebel Agent and Jedi Knight. --Patrick O'Kelley -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

From Library Journal

This latest installment from the producers of Star WarsR Original Radio Dramas (Audio Reviews, LJ 8/95) is the second in a series of three stories based on the Star WarsR: Dark ForcesTM and Jedi KnightTM interactive games. As the title suggests, the plot centers around a rebel agent named Kyle Katarn, son of Morgan Katarn of the rebel alliance. With the help of his love interest/rebel alliance partner, self-taught Jedi Kyle launches a mission to find the legendary Valley of the Jedi, overthrow the evil Dark Jedi Jerek, avenge his father's death, and complete his training to become a fully realized Jedi knight. The original musical production, combined with sound effects and full dramatization, helps to move the tale along nicely; but as an audio adaptation, this novel clearly loses something in the translation. This "rebel agent" finds himself unaccompanied throughout three quarters of the story; consequently, the listener spends much of the plot with a protagonist who is constantly and obsessively "talking himself through" much of the action. However, as is often the case with these installments and their loyal readers/listeners, who really cares about such minutiae? The Star WarsR saga returns with special guest appearances by old favorites Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa-Solo. Recommended for all sf audio collections.?Charlie Weiss, formerly with "Library Journal"

A Definite Improvement 19. Februar 2000
Von Nathan
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Jedi Knight, while still not as good as Soldier for the Empire, is a definte improvement over Rebel Agent.

For most of the book, the writing is back to Dietz' standard from the first one; fast paced but clear and understandable. Unofortunately, the last 20 or so pages would have been better expanded to 40. Again, in those last 20 pages, there are no less than three Jedi battles, a flashback to a huge historical battle, and the ending all stuffed in there. While it works, it would have been better expanded a little.

Also, many of the film characters are out of character. Although they aren't in the book much, Han doesn't sound like Han, and Luke's remembrance of Yoda doesn't sound right (Yoda's talking about subatomic particles or something). Also, this is kind of hard to place in relationship to Rebel Agent, as here Leia is Leia Organa Solo, and in Rebel Agent she is just Leia Organa, but there isn't really enough time between them for either version of her wedding to have occured.

Dorman's art, while not as beautiful as Williams's, is up to his usual standards. Occasionally the people look kind of funky, but all the landscapes, backgrounds and ships are exceptional as usual.

This book really explores much more deeply the workings and motivations of the Dark Jedi, especially Yun but including Sariss and Jerec. It shows clearly how and why the dark side of the Force is so tempting.

The action is still very good, but it was annoying seeing a lightsaber fight described in fencing terms. "She made a head cut, and he responded with Parry 5." Just doesn't sound right.

Still, its a much better book than Rebel Agent and a good conclusion to the trilogy. If you liked either of the others, buy this one.

The Game was better 29. März 2000
Von Mike
Format:Taschenbuch
Soldier for the Empire is a rather odd graphic novel. It combines a short book with illustrations that vary from strong to below average. It expands on the Dark Forces series of video games, and follows Kyle Katarn from his days as an Imperial agent to becoming one of the most trusted agents of the Alliance, to his days as a Jedi Knight.

The book had its moments, and most of the illustrations did the games, and the Star Wars universe credit. Unfortunately, there were some problems with the story (the sequence on the asteroid was a bit questionable so far as realism goes), and the drawings sometimes referred to the wrong pages. The book is better than its sequel, Rebel Agent, but comes up short when taking on the finale to the series, Jedi Knight. Buy that one instead, it isn't hard to figure out what's going on, particularly if you have played the game.

Beautiful 18. Februar 2000
Von Nathan
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Dark Forces -- Soldier for the Empire is an absolutely outstanding and refreshing Star Wars book. Taking place a couple of years before the first Dark Forces game and immediately before Star Wars: A New Hope, this book details Kyle Katarn's life before the games; his time in the Imperial service and his defection to the rebel cause.

The writing in this book is clear, concise, and crisp. The characters are dynamic and you find yourself caring what happens to them. And although it contradicts the backstory in the Dark Forces game manual, this is a better vision of Kyle Katarns life.

This book also shows a side of things not often seen in Star Wars -- that the stormtroopers are actually human, and the problems inherent in blindly accepting a defector (what if he's really a spy?).

While this all sets this "graphic story album" up as pretty good, what really takes the extra step to making it wonderful are the brilliant paintings by Dean Williams punctuating key scenes every few pages. They are absolutely terrific, and while not always 100% textually accurate are very effective. This book is almost worth buying for these alone.

Unfortunately, this book does have a little bit of a drawback -- the final chapter. This is, word for word and action by action, a retelling of the first level in the game. It could be used as a game guide. "Kyle stepped forward, shot a stormtrooper, opened the door, mowed down the Commando waiting there, etc..." It is kind of awkward and unbelievable the way in which he just strolls through this Imperial base without taking a scratch.

Overall, a very good book. Highly recommended.

The best of the Trilogy
This book continues the adventures of Kyle Katarn, a young man who is training to become a Jedi. It is by far the best of the trilogy, which began with Soldier for the Empire. Lesen Sie weiter...

Great! Encore! Dietz Does It Again!
The illustrations and writing style, as in the first two, are excellent. I just have one question about this: why is it so relatively easy for Kyle Katarn to defeat Jerec? Lesen Sie weiter...

Too many jumps, too short.
I didn't enjoy this book. None of the characters have any development. I didn't care who lived and who didn't. The premise for the story was epic but it's never realized. Lesen Sie weiter...

Very intriging story. Excellent illustrations.
The illustrations for the book were atsounding and very impressive. The story itself was at its peak for the Star Wars series and computer game, Dark Forces.
