While I loved Star Trek: The Next Generation for its complex storylines and continuity, I was always annoyed at the sterile personalities and apparent flawlessness of its crewmembers. STAR TREK: TNG - GHOSTS continues in that vein, giving readers a 5-part story that requires some time investment in order to grasp the subtleties, but offers little characterization. The Enterprise responds to the distress call of a marooned ship orbiting the planet Allios IV. The crew becomes involved in a political struggle between the two populations of the planet while attempting to determine what has happened to the sole occupant of the ship - a scientist that is missing parts of his body, yet is still alive. Furthermore, the scientist is seeing ghosts, one of which happens to be Captain Picard.
Overall, this is serviceable TNG, and as writer Zander Cannon captures the vibe of the TV series, it could work well as an episode. He sets up a good (and somewhat eerie) mystery with an effective emotional conclusion. Javier Aranda's slightly cartoonish art doesn't quite capture the looks of the various crewmembers, but it's good enough. This is the first of IDW's Next Generation series I've tried, and I'll be back for more.
