The political fallout between the Federation and the New Thallonian Protectorate pales, however, in comparison to the threat of an enigmatic alien race determined to seize the infant Cwan for its own mysterious purposes. But nothing could possibly prepare Calhoun for the shocking betrayal from within -- an act of treachery to aid and abet this alien race -- forever altering the lives of the Excalibur crew....

It has been a few month since we read last from Cpt. Calhoun and his crew, so that it took a few pages to get back into the flow of things. And the story around Si Cwan's son and the further fate of Robin Lefler and her mother is something that is very much rooted in the foregoing stories. So thi sis not really a novel to start the series.
In this book we see a lot of character-development - and a great abduction-story that should not be told here to keep it interesting - so that it is really full of surprises for everybody. I at least had a lot of fun with it.

Trek As Only Peter David Can Do It

We've all waited a long time for the next New Frontier novel and Peter David has delivered something worth waiting for. We pick up with the crew of the Excalibur and Prime Minister Robin Lefler around nine months after the events of the New Frontier graphic novel (which is a must read before this book), so as you can probably imagine the tale starts off with the birth of the heir of the late Si Cwan.
I won't say anymore on the plot itself except that there are some definite and unexpected twists and the reader would be well advised to follow closely down to the last sentence.
Character development continues, as usual with David's novels. The books is split between the perspectives of Soleta, Selar, Calhoun, Mueller and Shelby, though the latter only for a short while.
Treason is not a jumping on point for new readers, but rather the continuation of storylines we've all been following closely. It definitely leaves the reader wanting more and I hope we don't have to wait as long for the next installment.

Good, not great.

This book is a good read, a perfectly acceptable addition to the New Frontier series; if you've read all of the others prior to this, you'll probably want to read this one. If you haven't read to this point in the series, you'll definitely want to start elsewhere; like most of the series, this book does not stand on its own. What is particularly annoying is that apparently, Peter David branched out into graphic novels, and the entry into the series prior to this one is said graphic novel. So merely having read all of the REAL books in the series isn't sufficient; in order to be up on what's going on coming into this book, you need to have read the graphic novel. This is annoying for two reasons: one, I don't read comic books any more, and "graphic novel" is just a euphemism for "overpriced comic book". Two, in the list of "New Frontier Novels by Peter David, In Chronological order" that appears at the beginning of this book, the Graphic Novel is not listed, so there was no way of knowing that one was missing part of the lead-in by going directly from "Missing In Action" to this one. It didn't leave me TOO lost; I was more or less able to follow what was happening, but I did have the definite impression that I was missing something. A previous reviewer's comment explained what had happened to me.
I'm giving this book three stars because it was too well-written for me to feel comfortable giving it less, and I've always enjoyed Peter David's writing, and most of the characters and plots in this series. But if we're going to be left missing some of the story if we don't buy graphic novels, I think I'm going to have to give up on this series.

Horrible conversion to Kindle

I just had to post a review as I am having similar problems with other Star Trek novels. The conversion to Kindle has left them nearly unreadable. In fact, this novel I quit on before I finished the chapter when I spent to much time understanding what was being said. For example, she turns into s'he every time it is in the text. It is miserable and I am really disappointed. Amazon and the publisher both should ensure that the conversion is done better and should fix all the past books already out there. It seriously takes away from the reading experience.
