(This title is discontinued, but will remain free on Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/247875)

"Your dad's Indian. Your mom's black. Why are you white?"

Skylar St. Clair's been getting questions like these all his life. Skylar's home is the Nettlebush Indian Reserve; his family, the hundreds of Plains Shoshone living there. Skylar can't help it if he better resembles his biological mother, a woman whose untimely death left him with more secrets than memories.

Skylar's father has been in federal prison for the past fifteen years. The summer of his release coincides with familial matters of a different nature: Skylar and his husband are trying to adopt a daughter.

Piecing together a fragmented family is no small task. All the patience in the world cannot contend with thirty-three years of reticence.

But love can.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Entire Series is Amazing 14. November 2012
Von Matthew Coenen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been meaning to review the entire Gives Light series: Gives Light, Looks Over, St. Clair and, now, Why the Star Stands Still. The first three books in the series -- the "trilogy" -- are merely amazing.

While the stories are all fiction, they are based around the real-life practice of state run agencies taking Native American children from reservations and giving them to other families -- all for money. I had absolutely no idea things like this were still taking place in the United States of America. I'm not a Native American but am immediately going to the website Rose mentions above and signing the petition. It will take the efforts of many -- not just those immediately affected -- to end practices such as this.

The books, unlike many e-books from independent authors, are well written. Characters are likable. The plots are involved. I had a hard time putting each one down and while I just started this one, am pretty sure I'll be up late tonight reading it.

I _did_ choose to spend the 99 cents on Amazon (I'd have _gladly_ paid more) as I hope any money made by the author help in the fight against the kidnapping (because that's what it is) of Native American children. (Kind of makes you want to punch somebody, doesn't it? Even though violence never really solves anything.)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellnt series. 11. Dezember 2012

This series is excellent reading material. You will get to follow the lives of Skylar and Rafael on a Reservation for Native Americans. The story is a coming of age story for two young men and how they successfully meet the added challenges of reservation life. The author has a style that make you feel as if you are one of the characters observing this story as it unfolds over the years. Read all the books in the series to get the complete story. It is well worth the effort and I highly recommend it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sutummu tukummuinna 28. Oktober 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
Well after the 3 previous book of the serie I was VERY interested in a sequel! Originally it was a trilogy so what a joy when the writer announce it would be one more... a FREEBIE.
Why the star stands still is perfect... 17 years after the last book and answering all the questions you may have after the third book.
Sky and Rafael are adults now. What can I say??? I love them again!!!! Adults or teenagers, they are amazing characters and perfect to a reader searching a romantic but not sappy couple.  It's a book for everyone (absolutely no sex scenes, so yeah EVERYONE, also young adults SHOULD read it... Yeah, not could but should!).
Again there is some native American activism but it's much less than the third book, and it's again in the background of the story, not taking control of it (the reason I gave 3 stars to the previous book).

Dear reader of this review, if you are thinking if you must of not buy the books I can just say one thing to convince you, a Shoshone saying: Sutummu tukummuinna*

*“I don't speak your language, and you don't speak mine. But I still understand you. I don't need to walk in your footsteps if I can see the footprints you left behind.”
Christo, Rose. “Why the Star Stands Still (Gives Light #4).”

Read it folks... See through Sky eyes, from an innocent teenager to an adult, his family, his tribe, his... Life.

5 stars to this book, and 5 stars to this serie

I am forever fascinated by the Native American Community. They were and still are my SPIRITUAL GUIDES. Rose Christo writes very well and she is able to express in detail so many secret emotions, feelings and frustrations. In America we are very much estranged from the people that inhabited the land of America centuries before the WHITE MAN shot a gun and brought Jesus to a race that survived very well without the influence of the disease of religion, physical and mental health as well as a connection the Indian had with the land, sky and being intune with the planet.

I have read all of Rose Christo's series and loved them. I live in the great state of WYOMING. We have one of the most controversial Indian Reservations in America... I grew up in Utah knowing the UTE Indians were a dying tribe... not so anymore. I have camped out in the deserts of New Mexico and met many Native American Indians. They were always kind and generous to me. I hope I give the same back to a race that is sacred and needed... read the series.

I love this series and have found it not only entertaining but very informative about Native American culture and some of the hardships they still suffer. The characters were fascinating and endearing, making you feel like part of their story. I felt the anger and indignation at their unfair treatment just as they felt it. I will miss them now that their story is over, but I hope Ms. Christo has more stories to share. I recommend this series for anyone looking for a a compelling story about forgiveness, acceptance and love
