"A song of baseball's sweetest season." - Boston Globe; "Will take you to the endangered soul of baseball." - George Vecsey, New York Times; "Written with the same grace and intelligence Willie Mays brought to the game." - Booklist -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch.

Spring training is an American tradition dating back to the early years of the twentieth century, a time of renewal both for the players and the fans. William Zinsser vividly brings to life the unique once-o-year relationship between Bradenton, Florida, and its adopted team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1988 the Pirates were a promising young team with hopes of competing for the National League pennant. Given rare access to players, coaches, and even umpires, along with general manager Syd Thrift and manager Jim Leyland, Zinsser sought to discover how a team prepares - both physically and mentally - for the long season ahead. The names and the faces may have changed, yet Zinsser's book is as valid today in revealing how the fundamentals of baseball are taught and learned as it was when first published. This is highlighted in the new introduction and postscript, which includes a lengthy interview with Leyland about the lessons that can be learned from losing. Infused with a reporter's curiosity and a fan's lifelong love of the game, Spring Training captures the thrill of possibilities woven into the very fabric of each new season. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch.

A lightweight but charming look at spring training 6. März 2001
Von Cecilia Tan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
In 1987, the author made a trip to spring training to find out if all the myths about charming little towns and ballplayers everywhere were true. In Bradenton with the Pittsburgh Pirates, they were. Zinnser interviews players (Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla), coaches, umpires, and Edd Roush, the "oldest living hall of famer" with a fan's enthusiasm for everything about the game. It would be an especially fun book for a Pirate's fan, but any lover of the game can imagine him or herself asking the same questions the author does, as he ambles from scouts to pitching coaches to the boosters who rent the seat cushions in homey old McKechnie Park.
By the way, I review this and pretty much all baseball books I read at my enthusiast's web site "Why I Like Baseball" at [...]

For players and writers, spring training is about teaching and lesson reviews 18. August 2010
Von Larry Edsall - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Chances are, if you've taken a college course in writing or journalism, you've read William Zinsser's "On Writing Well." In "Spring Training," Zinsser doesn't tell us how to write well, he shows us.
Early in the book, he compares baseball and writing. "Very few sentences come out right the first time," he writes. "Even the best writers are initially .300 hitters, struggling every day against heavy odds to say what they want to say."
But Zinsser doesn't struggle. He says what he wants to say, as expected, in wonderfully clear and simple English.
Chapter 15 of the book, "Calling on Edd Roush," is Zinsser's account of visiting the oldest surviving member of the baseball Hall of Fame. It's so wonderfully composed it should be in the profile-writing Hall of Fame!

Dreaming and Remembering 7. März 2007
Von J. Schindler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
After reading "Spring Training," I could not remember the last time I smiled more while reading. Zinsser captures the true essence of baseball's idyllic past, a past rife with the smell of grass and dirt and hot dogs and worn leather. As Zinsser explores the Pirates' spring training, he prophesies about modernity and its effects on the game, especially on the loss of the wonder of baseball and its heroes, and lovingly explains the greatness of baseball without air conditioning. This book calmly and cheerfully reminisces about the height of American joy expressed in the cheers of the spring training crowd waiting with new gloves and full hearts.
