In Detail

Spring Framework has always had a good support for different data access technologies. However, developers had to use technology-specific APIs, which often led to a situation where a lot of boilerplate code had to be written in order to implement even the simplest operations. Spring Data changed all this. Spring Data makes it easier to implement Spring-powered applications that use cloud-based storage services, NoSQL databases, map-reduce frameworks or relational databases.

"Spring Data Standard Guide" is a practical guide that is full of step-by-step instructions and examples which ensure that you can start using the Java Persistence API and Redis in your applications without extra hassle.

This book provides a brief introduction to the underlying data storage technologies, gives step-by-step instructions that will help you utilize the discussed technologies in your applications, and provides a solid foundation for expanding your knowledge beyond the concepts described in this book.

You will learn an easier way to manage your entities and to create database queries with Spring Data JPA. This book also demonstrates how you can add custom functions to your repositories. You will also learn how to use the Redis key-value store as data storage and to use its other features for enhancing your applications.

"Spring Data Standard Guide" includes all the practical instructions and examples that provide you with all the information you need to create JPA repositories with Spring Data JPA and to utilize the performance of Redis in your applications by using Spring Data Redis.

This book is a standard tutorial which provides step-by-step instructions and a lot of code examples that are easy to follow and help you to get started from page one.

Who this book is for

This book is suited for developers who are working with Spring-powered applications, and are looking for an easier way to write data access code that uses relational databases. Also, if you are interested in learning how you can utilize Redis in your applications, this is the book for you. This book assumes that you have got some experience with the Spring Framework and the Java Persistence API. No previous experience with Redis is required.

2.0 von 5 Sternen pretty basic book 5. Dezember 2012
Von jim a - Veröffentlicht auf
I suppose this book is good if you're just starting out. But there's little detail and its very short.

Better off with google if you are already familiar with spring-data, JPA or Hibernate.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A good guide to explore Spring Data JPA 28. Mai 2013
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf
I bought the pdf download edition of the book and could get to using it instantly. I was able to cruise following the examples in the book. As a newbie to Spring Data JPA the soft approach on the subject offered by the book was easy on me. Also, I submitted errata and comments on the author's blog a few times. The author always took the chance to offer a detailed answer, explaining the issue or even writing a new article on his blog.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good book for start with Spring Data 12. Dezember 2012
Von memopena - Veröffentlicht auf
Below is my review per chapter:

* Chapter 1
Gives a good overview of the book. Introduce the key concepts to understand the Spring Data Framework and Spring Redis. it cover the advantages of using the framework, JPA main features and Redis Main Features.

* Chapter 2.
Provides the explanation of how to set up a basic web application to use the Spring Data framework. I really like the programmatic configuration of Spring application context and the practical explanation of how to set-up the project and the advance techniques of how to configure a web application. The use of design patterns like the builder pattern to build new object is a good point. The mechanics of build a repository the traditional way are contrasted with the perks offered by Spring Data.

* Chapter 3.
This chapter explains several strategies to build queries with Spring Data. This chapter contains the main approaches for building static and dynamic queries: JPA Criteria API, method name, named query, query annotation and querydsl framework. For all the approaches there are samples for queries using JPQL and Standard SQL. Additional sections on sorting and pagination are included, all this combined with advice in which strategy choose make this chapter very valuable.

* Chapter 4.
This chapter depicts a useful refactoring to keep the architecture of the sample app clean by adding custom functionality to the repository. Overall the concepts depicted in the chapter are high quality and aid well to the main topic like the use of factories and so on. On the negative side more background information is need it to fully take advantage of the topics and sample code for the beginners to the topic.

* Chapter 5.
This chapter is only a preparation for chapter 6, contains the details on how to set up the project for chapter 6, on my point of view more information is needed, like: what is Redis?, why do I need this stuff in my application?, etc..

* Chapter 6
Good advice on how to start with the Redis data model, components and serializers. The architecture of the sample application is discussed. The author shows how to create basic CRUD functionality and different storages approaches like using JSON with a string serializer to store objects as strings in JSON format.A section on Messaging with Redis is included, my question here is: Why do I will choose to use Redis for message processing?.May be just for the sake of curiosity, because there exists a bunch of message processing API's and Frameworks in java. The chapter close with a very good exposition on how to use Redis with Spring Cache.

I will give these book 4 stars out of 5. The book is Brief but take the reader to learn how to use Spring Data using a well crafted and compact application. Advanced techniques are shown like programmatic configuration of Spring Application Context that are good for Spring Beginners. The Book miss more details about the concepts and technologies that is introducing, this is key especially for new developers starting with this frameworks, a good book but very brief.
