One has to wonder why Dearborn did not import more of their German products to Canada and the United States in the 50s,60s and 70s.
We auto enthusiasts were lead to believe that Detroit did not know how to build a good small(er) car. The attempts by Ford to develop a small car for the North American market were a disaster, witness the infamous Pinto, and the equally abysmal Maverick. Yet all Ford had to do was to import it's German line up. Who knows, if Canadian and American consumers had been able to buy a Ford Taunus, the early German Escort, and the German Granada, perhaps the Japanese might not have gained a foot hold in the North American market. Ford did successfully market the Capri through it's Lincoln/Mercury dealers, so one has to wonder why Ford management did not clue into the fact that they had ready made small car line up that could have been sucessful in the new world.
