Thanks mainly to the Slott/Martin and Slott/Lark pairings. In this book, Spidey gets to meet again with old enemies such as Mysterio and Rhino. He also has to fight Mr. Negative with help (?) from on/off girlfriend Black Cat. But Peter Parker also goes through a lot of changes as Aunt May (edited spoiler) Harry Osborn and the Reilly cousins. Without revealing to much, let us just say that May proves not to be erm "Ms. Positive"... A good read all in all if not a masterpiece.

This collects issues #617-#621 of Marvel Comics' "Amazing Spider-Man" comic book series and two stories from "Web Of Spider-Man" #3 and #4, all originally published in Winter 2009-2010. This continues "The Gauntlet" story arc, a series of loosely connected encounters with classic Spider-Man villains that started in #612. Issue #617 shows The Rhino in two stories written by Joe Kelly, with artwork from Max Fimura and Javier Pulido, respectively. #618-#620 is a three-issue Dan Slott/Marcos Martin story arc featuring Mysterio and the Maggia. Dan Slott also wrote #621, in which Spidey and the Black Cat plot to retrieve something from Mr. Negative, who has separately done something to Aunt May. This volume also includes origin stories of The Rhino and Mysterio, each written by Fred Van Lente.

I've never been much of a Spider-Man reader, outside of a few crossover titles, but the concept of The Gauntlet really interested me. After just finishing the second book in the series, that interest has not waned.
This is a collection of three stories. The first deals with the Rhino and is my favorite of the bunch. It has heart and strong characters. The second features Mysterio and gets a little busy and confusing very quickly. The plot comes together, but I found the story to be all glamour and no depths or guts. Mysterio is pretty much the dime store conman version of Loki. Finally, the last issue in this collection deals with Mr. Negative, and for what it was, was not bad. All of the stories are left a bit open ended, but since the Gauntlet is far from over, I'm ok with that.
