Gauntlet keeps picking up steam

Spider-Man comics have lately been either you love it or you hate ever since "One More Day" and wasn't helped by Marvel's choice to publish the comic three to four times a month( $3.99 can add up people ). But after finding their legs the Spidey-Brain Trust( Marvel's words not mine ) consisting of a group of writers have been able to put out some really great stories given the occasional misstep or two.
In this volume collecting the "Shed" arc which continues the gauntlet theme we get a Lizard who is reborn but keeps the tragic theme that Spidey and his villians are known for. Conners is looking for a new job in a effort to keep his son who would like the rest of the world have nothing to do with a guy who has a habit of turning into a man sized rampaging lizard. Which is even more amped up after the events in this tbp Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 3: Here There Be Monsters we found out that Conners had actually be in control all those times he had transformed, the kicker here is that The Lizard no longer wants to be pushed to the far back regions of Conners mind and has decided to take over.
Zeb Wells did a great job of not only pointing out Conners just wants to be a dad but the internal conflict once he realises what The Lizard is doing in this war of two minds in one body. He also did a perfect job at showing the horror Spider-man faces as he tries to prevent losing a friend and the violent aftermath due to his failure. This is also helped thanks to the art of Chris Bachalo who has become one of Marvels top artist( plus he's a personal fav of mine ) but the only knock is that given his art style you know that while him on the book is great he's not a artist who can make awesome art for a book that comes out three times a month( this Rios comes in for some filler panels ). Another knock is how the "Nega-Aunt May" story was wrapped up in a single page, I can only speculate that at some point maybe this was going to be a longer plot thread but got cut short for some reason.
All in all I say this was a worthy arc in the Gauntlet series and was a welcome build up for Grim Hunt

The Gauntlet continues!

The Gauntlet continues with a completely satisfying change-up to the Lizard's status quo. This, along with the Rhino and Mysterio stories was the best of the Gauntlet. I need to stress how much Chris Bachalo's art shines here, as it always does - his figures are stylized and his layouts are amazingly designed. The coloring makes Bachalo's art pop and the whole book is as fun to look at as it is to read. A great job by Zeb Wells, if you're a fan of Chris Bachalo's artwork or the Lizard, you won't be disappointed - after this entry in The Gauntlet, the Lizard is a completely different animal.

The lizard was always a strange villian. He is one of those that seems to never be as evil as he can be. Well forget that here! The lizard here is brutal and savage. Truley a nightmare of a villian and it makes for great reading. I have not read any other Gauntlet stories so I bet I am missing alot of the story here, but it held up well enough on its own. The art by Bachalo is a little muddy sometimes but it works. I love his spider-man and his version of Lizard is the ebst around.
