While many Strength and Conditioning coaches proclaim Dr. Verkhoshanky's first Coaches Manual and book Supertraining to be the Bile's of Strength and Conditioning, this book does a much more elaborate job of detailing specifics of Dr. Verkhoshansky's work, explaining his methods and giving practical examples in detail for coaches to understand.

This book begins with a fantastic detailing of the Methodological foundation of Special Strength Training, going into elaborate explanations of its role in the training process, its tasks, its specific characteristics, and rules for applying it. One of the things that will help coaches is the footnotes at the bottom of the pages, they give citations and explain in more detail specific terms and ideas.

Building off of the his foundation, he goes into detail of specific means and methods that he uses to achieve his methodological approach: giving specific explanation of various methods of strength development, various training means, and specifics of applying jump training. Using the means and methods outlined, he goes on to discuss the structure and organization of training process by outlining the main principles of organizing training, the methodology behind his Block Training System, and his principles that relate to the training load. Even giving some humor by stating "The most frequent coaching error is when he strives to obtain an increase in the athlete's physical fitness level as soon as possible; increasing the training loads volume. However `nine pregnant women together cannot assure the baby's birth after one month".

For many Strength and Conditioning coaches who have a hard time conceptualizing Dr. Verkhoshansky's methodology without practical examples of his programming, Dr. V does a great job showing how he ties everything from the former portion of the book, into organized programs for specific sports.

To me, this is by far the most detailed, enlightened work of Dr. Verkoshansky. This book is a must have and I believe that this should be at the top of every physical preparation coach's bookshelf!

This book fills the missing void for coaches who are trying to produce world champions. When the conventional methods of periodization are exhausted and the athlete's technical and physical abilities are reaching near flawless and outstanding levels, this book provides the formula for spurring further adaptation. Because true high level athletes require more stimulus to further sports results, this book provides the reasoning for, and gives creative methods to continue to push towards the genetic potential of the athlete. The ideas in here may also spur more conversation for more methods to create new special exercises to further increase the speed of movement in athletes.

This book may be hard to understand but it is for a reason. These methods used with the wrong level of athlete will destroy them or hamper further improvement. But they are very powerful for the high level athlete. Therefore, it takes a TRULY high level coach (w/ a background of extensive education in biomechanics, physiology etc.) to take the information in here and give it practical application in the right time, right athlete and right sports.

A genuinely PRICELESS piece of literature.

This book was such an amazing read. It is a great book for coaches to take high level athletes and make them World Champion Athletes. It is a complex read, but that is why I believe this book was written. It gives the coach the next steps in order to take great athletes into world class athletes. I would recommend this book. I have read many books and articles on how to transform athletes into "world class" caliber, but this book helps coaches understand what they can do to make the world record athletes.

Special Strength Training Manual for Coaches is by far the best book I have read on learning about Dr. Verkhoshansky's methods. Before this book I felt I would try to put together what I had read in different articles he wrote and after this book it all pieced together and makes for an easy reference to look back at when using different methods.

In the book different subjects such as Dynamic Correspondence, his jumping hierarchy, and programs for various sports are shown. Not only does it give you more detail on the information you may have been trying to figure out from Dr. Verkhoshansky, but it gives you practical examples. Probably one of my top 5 books I look back to all the time. An endless tool!

This book is a must have for any professional involved in training athletes for the improvement of sports performance. The author does a thorough job explaining his philosophies and methods which seem to relate to a high percentage of what still currently happens in weight rooms of many athletes around the world. You will not regret going through this book.
