The same bizarre mixture of ingredients that has turned Kinky Friedman from a country musician into a popular mystery writer and hero of his own series continues in this exercise oddity, which, true to form, seems to contain something to offend virtually everyone. "If you spend a little time with lesbians and nuns, you begin to see the effect love or the absence of it can have on a human life," muses the Kinkster at one point. This comes after a campaign by Friedman to terrorize his upstairs neighbor, Winnie Katz, whose lesbian dance classes have caused the ceiling of his Greenwich Village loft to collapse. But Kinky's amateur terrorism pales by comparison to the mysterious person who wants to do some real damage to Winnie, so Friedman and his Village Irregulars turn from aggressors to protectors. Surrounded by Italian gangsters with names like Linguini and Gepetto, they plan a weird revenge scheme that involves such horrors as chainsaws and Friedman in a red wig.
The title--usually the best thing about a Kinkster book--has to do with which particular member of his motley crew will be officially chosen to play Watson to his Sherlock. But even here there are no clear answers: as Friedman says, "President Clinton is Watson. The Chinese dwarf who paints pastels on Mott Street is Watson. The world is Watson. Only Sherlock Holmes stands achingly alone on the weather-beaten, worm-eaten cross of rational thought. Sherlock Holmes, you see, is the thinking man's Jesus Christ."

Since he already shares so many of the hallmarks of that other Sherlock Holmesdrug use, sexual confusion, and his own Village Irregularswhy shouldn't Kinky Friedman, the Sherlock of Vandam Street, have his own Dr. Watson? And what better occasion to audition potential Watsons from among the Irregulars than the death threats someone's scribbled to Winnie Katz, the man-hating lesbian dancer instructor upstairs? So p.i. Steve Rambam bugs Winnie's apartment to get more info; reporter McGovern and photographer Mick Brennan pretend to be with the Times of London to interview her; upstairs neighbor Stephanie Dupont goes undercover as a new dance student; so does Ratso Sloman, disguising himself as Barney Frank supporter Roscoe Figbiter to take Winnie's friends out for pizza. What none of the Watsonabes knows is that the threatening note was written by the Kinkster himself, smashed, stoned, and furious at the plaster the constant twinkle-toes above have shaken loose from his ceiling and sent falling on his head. But if the whole cockeyed caravan is based on nothing more than Kinky's prank, why is somebody in a Fred Flintstone mask breaking into Winnie's apartment to threaten her for real? And can Kinky rouse himself from his reveries of legendary professional gas-passer Le Petomaine (18571945) and lopsided conversations with his cat to solve the mystery? Out of all Kinky's dozen cases (Blast from the Past, 1998, etc.), this is the first one in which the plot doesn't interrupt the flow of laugh-out-loud jokes, because the whole plot is one big joke. KINKY FRIEDMAN ist amerikanischer szene-KULT-autor und im deutschsprachigen raum bei DIOGENES erschienen, WIGLAF DROSTE brachte ihn auf audio-CD oder schrieb ihm vor- und nachworte / oder wird neuerdings von der berliner edition TIAMAT des klaus bittermann fröhlich ins publikum geworfen: erkläre ich meiner katze, die es sich wieder einmal unter meiner schreibtischlampe bequem gemacht hat, die sie als heizlampe zu verwenden pflegt. kinky FRIEDMAN, der mit dem deutschen michel FRIEDMAN nichts gemeinsam hat, außer dass er jüdischen glaubens ist, - er hat auch eine katze und vermerkt, seinen schreibfluss unterbrechend, parallel immer, was sie gerade tut (meine dreht mir den rücken zu, nur ein ohr ist auf beobachtungstour). in "SPANKING WATSON" [deutscher titel "BALLETTRATTEN in der VANDAM STREET"] ärgert sich serien-detektiv friedman über eine lesbische ballettgruppe, die über ihm in seinem manhattan-loft eine tanzschule betreibt, elefantenhaft, so dass ständig große brocken putz auf friedman und seine katze herabfallen (erkläre ich meiner katze unter der heizlampe, aber die sagt natürlich nichts. sie hat keine direkte beziehung zu lesben). friedman treibt nun alle seine freunde in der new yorker SOHO und greenwich village-ära an, die tanzgruppe aus dem takt zu bringen. außerdem tüftelt er noch an einem zweiten fall herum: er will die tochter von JOE-die-HYÄNE ausfindig machen (versuche ich meine katze zu begeistern, die italienische vorfahren hat; "sie öffnet ein gelbes auge, das so alt ist wie die welt" - "es gleicht einem großen, unverwandten, unbedachten strudel einer weisheit, die sie wohl für sich behalten will"). die "TRAMPELSCHLAMPEN" über detektiv kinky müssen mancherlei unbill erleiden, denn, wie sagt friedman so nett (und das könnte auch von WIGLAF DROSTE sein): "in jedem von uns steckt wohl ein stück IDI AMIN und ein stück MUTTER THERESA. wir sollten dankbar sein, dass die beiden nie kinder miteinander hatten." meine katze steht auf und will raus in den garten. ich übergebe ihr die verantwortung dafür, dass ich die pointe der story jetzt nicht erzählen kann...

I can't believe this guy: he writes a non-existent plot, he keeps repeating himself in trite gags and aphorisms, his setting is always the same rather than not, but I love him! It's just like getting addicted to cigars: I hate the smell, yet I've got to smoke'em... Kinky grows on you, after a while you become part of his Irregulars and, with them, you enjoy the ride, doesn't matter where. There is also a strange feeling of melancholy in his writing, a tendency to look back sadly and reminisce, and the reader empathizes. What else can I say? It was through this book that I first discovered Kinky Friedman: now I've read the lot!

i laughed, i hooted, i drank some brandy, and i smoked cigars. kinkstah is back and damn!, is this book great. i liked so much more than BLAST FROM THE PAST this has soul to it, and its a hell of a good read! so kinkstah if yer out there, keep em comin, i'll keep reading them, and maybe someday we can smoke a ceegar, you, me, the cat, and the negro puppet head.
