5.0 von 5 Sternen A Pragmatic and Well Thought-Out Book 3. Juli 2009

Most of us like to read in the little bit of "downtime" we have -- commute to work, standing on a supermarket line, waiting for someone at a restaurant, etc. Those of us actively learning a language would like a thin and light no-nonsense book to study from. Clearly, textbooks are too clunky and heavy to stuff into a handbag. On the other hand, reference books have too much detail and not enough information. This book is the *perfect* compromise between the two.

There's a long period of time between reading information and assimilating information. The key for most of us is practice, practice, practice. This book is perfect for those of us who have read about the various Spanish verb tenses, but still need the clarification, repetition, and reinforcement that is required to master a language. The book is a reference in the sense that it contains lists and data. Yet its more than a reference in the sense that it covers the material needed to communicate in Spanish effectively without covering the exotic material that would only obscure the goal of becoming proficient at knowing and using verb tenses. Coupled with the low price, it is truly a remarkable little book that deserves space on every Spanish student's bookshelf.

Brandon Simpson's pedagogy is spot-on. He refuses to call any verb that is predictable via some kind of pattern an "irregular verb". This is the "can do" approach to learning. While most professors would call "tener" an irregular verb, Mr. Simpson explains in very simple language why it is NOT irregular. In his view, there are really not many irregular verbs, so the reader spends less energy stressing over "why are there so many irregular verbs" and more time learning.

There are tons of analogies, mnemonics, explanations, etc to help make Spanish verb tenses easier to master for the Spanish student. This book is highly recommended.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Kindle version is unformatted, not useable 10. Februar 2010
Von Desert Monsoon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I downloaded Spanish Verb Tenses: Conjugating Spanish Verbs on my Kindle this morning after viewing it in paperback form using "Look Inside". It had lots of simple but useful charts and tables in the paperback edition, similar to other things I have downloaded for Kindle. Nothing more complicated than I have seen in other electronic books.

I was very disappointed to find out that this book is almost completely unformatted in Kindle form. For example, the contents of tables are just run together in a paragraph so that there is no way to determine the headers or row or column structure. I was impressed by the clear and simple layout of the paperback version. Much of the usefulness of the book comes from that layout. Most of that is lost in the Kindle version.

For example, the clear and simple chart of pronouns near the front of the book is rendered like this:

yo I nosotros(as) we
tu you (inf. sing) vosotros(as) you-all(inf) usted you(for. sing.) ustedes you-all (for) el he ellos they (m or m/f) ella she ellas they (all f)

You get the idea. Not particularly useful.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very useful information 5. Juni 2013

This book is probably not what you think it is. When I first saw the title, I falsely assumed it was just another reference book showing the various conjugations of the most common 500 or so Spanish verbs. On the contrary, the text explains how and when the tenses are used, how different verbs are used to express the same general thought and how a change in tense can completely change the meaning of the infinitive, how to conjugate, etc.

Verbs in English are relatively easy to learn. The conjugations are fewer. I talk, you talk, he/she talks, we talk, they talk. How hard is that? On the other hand, verbs in Spanish can be intimidating and overwhelming. Hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan, and in some countries hablás or hablái is thrown in just to ruin the student's day. Other complications include differences between the use of tenses and, of course, everyone's favorite: the beloved subjunctive. Nevertheless, the Spanish verb can be mastered. This book will show you how to do it.

Notes:

Vos has long been used in Costa Rica where it can found in advertisements as well as informal conversations. Su merced is heard around Bogotá.

I do not recall reading another explanation the preterit progressive. Well done.

The subjunctive is thoroughly explained.

The explanation of the active and inactive tenses is quite good.
The Spanish inactive is often preferred by native speakers. In English the active is usually preferred.

Although we often hear of regular and irregular verbs, some irregular verbs are quite regular and easy to learn.

The section on the reflexive brought back memories of some of the dumb things I have said. I recall telling some Chileans "Rompí mi pierna." This three word sentence has two errors. I meant to say "I broke my leg." What came out was "I intentionally broke my leg." When my friends stopped laughing, they suggested "Se me rompió la pierna." A very loose translation would be "My leg broke on me." I did not break anything. The leg broke itself. Note that parts of the body rarely use the personal possessive and "la pierna" is preferred to "mi pierna." In a small Nicaraguan town, we saw two men washing a van. One man threw a bucketful of water on his friend. I observed, "Se mojó." I meant, of course, "He got wet" but what I actually said was "He wet himself." When my companion stopped laughing and was able to breathe again, he corrected me and suggested "Lo mojaron" or "They got him wet."

Some other ways to say "to be" that come to mind include quedar, encontrarse and hallarse. They are often used to mean "to be located, be found, etc." Paso Canoa queda a dos horas de aquí. (Paso Canoa is two hours from here.) Las llaves se hallan en la mesa. (The keys are on the table.)

The chief defect of the book is that it was not available when I became interested in Spanish years ago. It would have made things so much easier. Nobody has had more problems with the Spanish subjunctive than I. And the book is even fun to read. Yes, I said "fun".

I'm a beginner in Spanish, and the verbs really throw me. This is a great reference when I just can't remember what I need to know. Good for memorizing. I drill with this book daily.
