Produktbeschreibungen

From Library Journal

Grade 5-8-"In space, a gallon of water costs as much as a house, you can't get any TV stations, and opening a window will kill you." Gathering information from astronauts and other scientists, Dyson takes readers through crew training and launch; covers physical necessities and hazards, including a detailed look at space toilets; describes the kinds of tasks and research that can be performed on a space station; then brings astronauts back to Earth for a study of the effects of an extended stay off-planet. Artfully mixing big questions ("If people stayed in space, would they end up as blobs?") with well-chosen scientific and personal details, Dyson at once excites and informs young readers. Clever, low-tech demonstrations and experiments elucidate physical principles. The illustrations include lucid cartoons and color photos, and a concluding list of Web sites will expedite further inquiry. Though the author only focuses on the U.S. and Russia and is weak on historical background, with the upcoming construction of the International Space Station, this consciousness raiser couldn't be better timed. A lively, up-to-date replacement for Don Berliner's Living in Space (Lerner, 1993) and Larry Kettelkamp's Living in Space (Morrow, 1993).

Der Autor über sein Buch

Former NASA Flight Controller
Thanks for taking time from your busy life here on Earth to find out more about life in space. I became interested in space from reading science fiction as a child. I only read when it was cloudy because when the skies were clear, I would lie in the yard and dream of visiting the stars.

I got my degree in physics and was fortunate to be one of the first ten women to work for NASA as a flight controller in Mission Control. I left NASA to raise my family and began sharing my passion for space through writing (nonfiction, poetry, and science fiction for adults and children). I have not been in space (yet!), but I have "flown" most of the simulators at NASA, including being weightless on the infamous "Vomit Comet." (Yes, it is aptly named!)

It took me two years to research and write this book - my first one - and my kitchen "laboratory" where I tested various experiments for the book will never be quite the same. If you ever figure out how to make astronaut ice cream, please send me an e-mail!

Being a new author (though I have written for children's magazines such as Odyssey for many years), I am rather anxious to hear your comments: What new piece of information surprised you the most? What activity did you like best?

If you'd like an autographed copy or to have me visit your school or library and do a science demonstration, drop me an e-mail.

Thanks again for your time and interest.

Ad Astra (Latin for "to the stars"),

Marianne J. Dyson

Marianne Dyson has produced a wonderful, thoughtful book that answers many of children's questions about living in space. How do you go to the bathroom? How do you eat? How do you breathe? She provides clear explanations and wonderful, first-hand quotes from astronauts that bring the experience to the reader in a fresh manner. The little science experiements and "try this at home" examples are a delight and really set this book apart. I read this book to my 10-year old as a bed-time story and we both loved it! As the International Space Station becomes operational next year, this volume will be indespensable for explaining to curious youngsters just what is going on.

Dyson's treatment of the phenomena in microgravity is particularly good. She provides a variety of entertaining experiments to demonstrate technology used in space. Though this book is clear enough for older children, it certainly would furnish an interested adult with plenty of new information in a readable, interesting style. This is a good gift book for that curious kid on your gift list -- but you should also get a copy for your coffee table.

Excellent book about space 20. Oktober 1999

An excellent book about the science of free-fall and space, written for kids, but interesting for adults as well. It has tons of interesting "hands-on" demonstrations suitable for kids that illustrate how the space station works. Would be great if you wanted ideas for a science project, or just if you're interested in the science behind space missions.
