Der Lonely-Planet "Asia on a shoestring" gehört sicherlich zu den Klassikern der Backpackerreisebegleiter und ist für alle, die viele Länder Südost-Asiens in einer relativ kurzen Zeit (1-2 Monate) bereisen wollen, unentbehrlich. Es werden Kambodscha, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos und Singapur abgehandelt. Besonders die "Essentials" sind sehr nützlich, wie z.B. Infos zu Visaformalitäten, zur Gesundheitsversorgung, etc. Für detailiertere Informationen ist dieser Reiseführer jedoch unzureichend, so wird z.B. eines der Highlights Südost-Asiens, die Tempelstadt Angkor in Kambodscha, auf gerade mal ein bis zwei Seiten inhaltlich beschrieben. Es werden nur die wesentlichen (touristisch interessanten) Orte abgehandelt, was in Betracht der Platzknappheit des Buches (schließlich soll ganz SO-Asien enthalten sein) verständlich ist. Viele Backpacker bemängeln zudem die schlechten, oftmals sehr ungenauen (manchmal sogar falschen) Karten im LP. Zusammenfassend läßt sich sagen, daß der "South-East-Asia on a shoestring" für alle geeignet ist, die in kurzer Zeit sehr viel sehen wollen (und große Distanzen zurücklegen), jedoch inhaltlich sehr dürftig erscheint, was wiederum die Anschaffung von jeweils detailierteren Reiseführern (besonders die Lonely-Planets der einzelnen Länder!) erfordert. Für mich war es daher nicht verwunderlich, daß gerade dieser Reiseführer oft in den Secondhand-Bücherläden (z.B. in der Khaosanroad in Bangkok) zum Verkauf angeboten wurde, da viele Rucksackreisende ihn als zu dürftig empfanden und ihn daher weiterverkauften (was die knappe Reisekasse kurzzeitig sicherlich entlastete). LP's shoestring of SE Asia is still the most popular guidebook for the entire region. I've spent 2 month in Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra and Java and I would choose this book again. The facts are up to date and pretty reliable too. I can recommend this book to all budget travellers, who want to travel around in more countries on the main tourist routes. All the information of the large cities are comprehensive and the facts about the interesting spots are sufficient too. This guidbook contains only bottom end and mid range price accomodations - not the top end! It is not suited for large excursions into remot areas if they are not popular for tourist and sometimes I wish there would bee more maps. But in this case you will always find someone with a full version to make foto copies from and if you're really unsatisfied you can buy cheap used guidebooks in the capitals ore nearby the borders.

This guide (actually a previous edition) provided fairly reliable, basic information when I was trekking through Southeast Asia for seven months. When I landed by bus, taxi, motorcycle, truck, boat, trishaw, foot, or (sometimes) horse in a strange town at night where I didn't speak the language, it kept me alive. With its help I could always find the town center, the police station, and a bus stop.Just don't expect it to enhance your experience, or even guide you safely. It's written in a smug, almost weary style, and despite its budget approach seems aimed at very conventional travelers. There are none of the colorful, devil-may-care suggestions one finds in other guides, and it brings to mind the dour, conscientious tourists one meets on the road who are very nice but could backpack through Borneo without bringing back a single interesting story. This book has no spirit. Maybe the reason it seems a bit inflexible and "un-hip" is because the editors are not responsive to the feedback of readers. I was very badly robbed a couple of times while using services recommended highly by this guide (for instance by the owners of the "Good Luck" Guest House in Bangkok), and after writing Lonely Planet with a polite request that they caution future travelers, I received no acknowledgment of my letters, and in fact the services in question are still touted by their guide. This sort of apathy illustrates to me why their latest editions often seem years out of date, and why hotels and restaurants highly praised by them turn out to have closed down years ago. I understand that they have a limited number of researchers, but if they ignore input from readers who actively explore these regions, they are naturally going to be out-of-touch, behind the times, and useless. My advice is to buy the book if nothing else is available, because it does provide detailed factual information like phone numbers, addresses, etc. Just don't assume that it tells you all the interesting places and activities in a given city, because that's a laugh!!
