'Ruth Park ...that steady glow at the heart of Australian literature.' Ruth Cracknell Three of Ruth Park's best loved books - Missus, The Harp in the South and Poor Man's Orange - are brought together in this volume, tracing the saga of the Darcy family over thirty years. The story has its beginnings in the awkward courtship of dreamily innocent Margaret Kilker and unwilling hero Hugh Darcy in the dusty country towns of rural Australia. After their marriage, the couple moves to Sydney and raises a family amid the brothels, grog shops and run-down boarding houses of inner-city Surry Hills, where money is scarce and life is not easy. Here their daughter Roie grows up all too quickly, while younger daughter Dolour tries to make sense of a world in which loss and love go hand in hand. Filled with beautifully drawn characters that will make you laugh as much as cry, Ruth Park's Australian classics take you from the barren landscapes of the outback to the colourful slums of Sydney with convincing depth, careful detail and great heart.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Australian writer 8. April 2013

We seem so preoccupied with formulaic novels these days that many people pass over the truly brilliant writers who lead us to this point in literature.

Ruth Park, without as doubt, is one of the great, iconic authors from Australia.

This trilogy is superbly written and a story of true humanity. Not only are the settings fascinating, but the characters are compelling.
Written with such style and class, a true writer who loved her characters and nurtured them through her books, this is a series that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Ruth Park certainly has a grasp on the history of Irish settlement in Australia. Being of Irish decent I sometimes squirmed.... sometimes laughed and sometimes cried. I will read more of this author.

What a beautifully well written book that covers 4 generations. The authors attention to detail is so brilliant you believe and feel you are with any one of the characters. A long book, but never boring. Enjoyable from beginning to end.

Loved the stories. Park wrote with style that bought me into the story and I felt the emotions and sentiments that flowed with the characters in the stories. I am glad I Bought the trilogy as I could continue the journey without any wait.

I'm not a book reviewer, all I can say is that I'm almost finished and I think the trilogy is wonderful and is written in such a way that you feel as though you are watching a movie and the characters become so clear in your mind in every way. So much to love about this book which is a tragic tale in many ways. Its very sad with not many happy events but its fascinating and addictive! Its a long while since I've enjoyed a book so much. The Power of One, read many years ago, had a similar impact on me. I generally find myself reading crime and mystery books and this was definitely a wonderful change. Thank you to the ABC Book Club for bringing The Harp in the South to my attention.
