Pressestimmen

"This book is bursting with memorable anecdotes about [Lanois's] collaborators, another of the debut author's many gifts to fans of rock and country music." --Kevin Canfield, "San Francisco Chronicle"

"The master musician and producer offers a typically idiosyncratic take on his life and art . . . Readers will savor the unique character of the producer's unconventional technique, which often employs setting up a jerry-rigged studio with vintage gear in an exotic locale. . . Lanois' book bursts with atmosphere and feeling. He is that rare breed, a lyrical technocrat, and he emerges from the work as one of music's most unusual and charismatic figures. There's really nothing like this oft-rapturous work in the canon of musical memoirs." --"Kirkus" (starred review)

"In his humble, self-effacing memoir of growing up poor in Canada, Lanois, born in a small Quebec town, describes the difficulties he faced . . . He discusses specific albums, including U2's "The Joshua Tree" and the "Unforgettable Fire," Dylan's "Oh Mercy" and "Time Out of Mind," and Harris's "Wrecking Ball." And that makes this a real treat for serious music fans." --"Booklist"

""

"Marvelous . . . [A] jam-packed work that bears comparison to "Chronicles: Volume 1," the 2004 tome by Lanois' former production client Bob Dylan . . . A wonderful read." --Christopher Morris, "Soundcheck," "Variety"

""

"Daniel Lanois' memoir could've easily been a 'look-at-where-I've-come-from-and-look-what-I've-accomplished' bit of swagger and boast--but it never comes close to being that. As he swings from sounding like an excited young Edison as he and Brian Eno unlock sonic secrets, to remembering his young-boy fear of forgetting the addresses of any of his 120 newspaper route customers, Lanois writes with an openness and honesty about himself that leaves you feeling this is truly an interesting and humble man. When he describes some of the processes used in recording the highly successful albums he's produc

Kurzbeschreibung

Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, U2, Peter Gabriel, and the Neville Brothers all have one thing in common: some of their best albums were produced by Daniel Lanois. A Frenchspeaking kid from Canada, Lanois was driven by his innate curiosity and intense love of music to transcend his small-town origins and become one of the world's most prolific and successful record producers, as well as a musician in his own right. Lanois takes us through his early years, from his single mother raising four kids on a hairdresser's salary, to his discovery by the artist Brian Eno, to his work on albums such as U2's "Joshua Tree" and Dylan's "Time Out of Mind". He delves into the ongoing evolution of technology, the birth of the microchip and the death of discrete circuitry, and the arrival of the download era. Part technological treatise, part philosophical manifesto on the nature of artistic excellence and the overwhelming need for music, "Soul Mining" brings the reader viscerally inside the recording studio, where the surrounding forces have always been just as important as the work itself. Beyond skill, beyond record budgets, beyond image and ego, says Lanois, music is love and truth.

Wisdom in a technologically sataurated age 11. Dezember 2010
Von Moogwoman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book fell into my arms by chance. I couldn't put it down. Decades ago a Québécois friend introduced me to Daniel Lanois's masterpiece recording "Acadie". Anyone who has listened to "Most of the Time" by Bob Dylan and wondered why it sends shivers down your spine will want to read his account of producing so many classic recordings. Growing up poor, building his own recording studio in his mom' s basement, how he came work with Brian Eno, how this led to U2 and Joshua Tree.

His life changed forever. But it didn't really change. He was true to his roots and that is the wisdom of this book. "Record producer" doesn't begin to describe his role. The right motor bike can save a recording, as can less technology. How the magic can be coaxed out of great performers and what happens when it departs: Daniel Lanois tells it as it was. Many of the haunting lines from Acadie grace the book. You know you are in the eyes of the Maker.

Well Worth the Read 12. Dezember 2010
Von Irene - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
A behind the scenes look at the man involved in the magic of many outstanding recordings, "Soul Mining, A Musical Life" tells the story of humble beginnings, musical technique and relationships. Fascinating in its honesty and revealing in its stories, the book offers a musical history for some of the most well respected recordings of our time, from U2's "The Joshua Tree" to Peter Gabriel's "So" to The Neville Brothers' "Yellow Moon" to Bob Dylan's "Time Out of Mind." Insights into a creative mind form the basis of the book, with road stories framing Daniel Lanois' musical journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in music and to those who wish to learn more about the creative process. Daniel Lanois has been at the heart of many great rock and roll sessions, and his book is a valuable contribution to this history as well.

A Soulful and Spiritual Encounter 21. Juni 2011
Von Darin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The word genius is probably overused, and if such is the case, it should be reserved for the likes of Daniel Lanois. It took me a couple of chapters to get the feel for Lanois' writing style, but once I did, I really came to appreciate his approach. He sheds much light on working with U2, Bob Dylan, Rick James, Peter Gabriel, and Willie Nelson among others. If you enjoy stories about the process of making music, then you will really like this book. If you enjoy reading about perspectives on life that are filled with soul and spirituality, then you will LOVE this book.
