    Kurzbeschreibung

2012 National Reader's Choice Award Winner
    2012 Golden Heart Finalist

One mistake could lead to capture and entrapment in a marriage Anne-Sophie Duncombe would rather die than endure. Her only choice is a radical scheme — a life of humility and disguise, a life of exile.

Wilhelm Montegue, the Earl of Devon, is insane. At least that’s what everyone says. But who could blame them? He’s a tormented war hero surrounded by scandal. And his unmentionable “condition” keeps him confined to his country home. His only saving grace is his brilliant mind and unquestionable talent for composing beautiful music.

When a new housemaid is hired at Rougemont, Lord Devon is perplexed to find himself fascinated by her. He knows the exquisite beauty is keeping secrets, but her siren's voice draws him in and he can't resist the intoxicating scent of danger surrounding her.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Moriah Densley sees nothing odd at all about keeping both a violin case and a range bag stuffed with pistols in the back seat of her car. They hold up the stack of books in the middle, of course. She enjoys writing about Victorians, assassins, and geeks. Her muses are summoned by the smell of chocolate, usually at odd hours of the night. By day her alter ego is your friendly neighborhood music teacher. She lives in Las Vegas with her husband, four children, and two possibly brain-damaged cats. Published in historical and paranormal romance, Moriah has a Master's degree in music, is a 2012 RWA Golden Heart finalist, 2012 National Reader's Choice Award winner in historical romance and '12 NRCA "Best First Book" finalist.

5.0 von 5 Sternen sweet, different, entertaining 26. April 2014

For once, the characters actually have a relationship outside the bedroom. There is a certain depth in the characters, the story and the writing. No pathos (i love you soo much blabla), but a display of genuine affection. Sophia and Wil connect intellectually, erotically and emotionally - that makes it a refreshing read

    5.0 von 5 Sternen A Fantastic Read 4. Juni 2012
Von MVF - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
There are some stories that stay with you and this is one.

To escape her horrific past, Sophia has hidden herself in the household of Lord Devon as a servant. But she soon draws the notice of enigmatic Lord, a war hero and reluctant peer. Working for Lord Devon is a difficult task for he has very exacting demands--such as everything must be in its place. Sophia finds herself verbally sparring with the frustrating Lord, who hides his own "illness"--savant autism. These are two broken people that work together to become whole as Sophia's and Wilhelm's past come back to haunt them both.

This was a delightful read, the heroine, Sophia, was strong without being shrewish. The abuse she'd endured didn't break her, but made her more determined. The hero, Wilhelm, is a powerful man, with an artist's heart. As soon as they were on the page, especially together, they capture the reader with clever dialogue and interesting settings. The savant autism, for me, was skillfully woven in and made Wilhelm an even more intriguing hero.

From the moment I picked up this book, I was hooked. The imagery was sharp and the writer's voice was clear. The emotion wasn't over done, but threaded through, so much so, when I came to the last chapter I found myself tearing up. I am not an emotional reader and this surprised and delighted me. The happy ever after was perfect.

I highly recommend this book written by debut author Moriah Densley. Her voice and writing is strong and I suspect this is only the beginning for this talented writer. This is one story I will read again and again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Brutal honesty wrapped in lyrical prose 25. September 2013
    Von P. James - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This was Moriah Densley's debut novel. I received a copy as a contest coordinator and was interested enough, I read the book myself. When I discovered it has been released for Kindle at a special price, I bought it to add to my "keeper shelf."

The plot of this historical, at first blush, appears to be a trope-filled Victorian novel. And then you begin to read. Ms. Densley creates fresh characters that break out of the tropes. Sophia Duncombe is intelligent, strong, and willing to do whatever it takes to keep herself safe from her father and his nefarious plans for her. Hiring on as a maid in the household of Wilhelm Montegue, Earl of Devon, seemed a safe bet at the time. But Sophie is a lady through-and-through and she doesn't fool Lord Devon for long.

Wil is an enigma--a second son who has inherited the title upon the death of his wastrel brother. He is an autistic savant, a man of darkness prone to trances as his intelligence ignites his brain in spurts of glorious pursuits--math, music, photographic memory. He is a war hero, though whispers rumor his dark deeds. And he is completely smitten by his maid. Figuring out who she is, he sets out to "gentle" her in order to both seduce her secrets and then win her love.

Ms. Densley tells this story with brutal honesty wrapped in lyrical prose. This is the story of two damaged people seeking redemption in the arms of the other. It is memorable and imminently readable. I highly recommend this book to fans of historical romance, especially those looking for unique heroes and heroines that also satisfies all the reasons we read historical romances.

This isn't your mama's historical--with a memorable, tortured hero and a heroine who uses a steel exterior to cover a vulnerable, damaged heart, this book will keep you turning pages. Highly recommend.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Heaps of Hyperbole 29. November 2013
Von Ann Elliot - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This debut novel shows that the author is adept with words and knows how to write. Her use of a savant hero shows that she is willing to go beyond the usual characterizations.

At first, I decided not to review this book. So many readers loved the book; I didn't. Then I wished there had been more dissenting reviews to help me judge whether this book was a good fit for me before I invested time and money.

There is no way to discuss my view of the book without !BIG SPOILERS!
Most romance novels require suspension of disbelief, but I couldn't keep my disbelief at bay for this story. It kept falling to the ground with a resounding THUD.

Everything about the story was carried to excess. Not only must both the H and h be geniuses, but they must each speak six languages. He composes world-class music off the top of his head; she reads Dostoyevsky to relax. And they are both 30-something virgins.

The villain, the heroine's father, is an inhuman monster. When he sends a henchman to rape his daughter, she is badly beaten, but escapes by letting guard dogs maul the man. And yet, he returns to the house as if nothing had happened and no one notices he has been chewed by dogs.

When the heroine is in great peril, the hero removes her, his elderly aunt and three young nieces to a remote cottage, with only a cook/housekeeper in attendance.

The hero refuses to sleep with the heroine after marriage "for her own good," and after he succumbs, he goes right back to the old mind set, so they keep going back to square one.

There is a great deal of over-the-top violence, with the hero getting away with the murder of a captured villain who is a guest in his home. And yet we are to admire him.

I think you get the idea. Authors who think outside the box are admirable, but I think this one should take a deep breath and move into the box a bit.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Unexpected. Smart. Captivating. I love Wilhelm! 4. Juni 2012
Von IP - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
    Format:Kindle Edition
Unexpected. Smart. Captivating. I have to admit, it took a while for me to warm to Sophia despite her bravery, her clever wit and her many other fine qualities. I fell hard and fast for Wilhelm, though. He's damaged. Oh, so damaged. He's brilliant. He's flawed. What other hero compliments his love with Fibonacci sequences? Calms his mind by reciting quadratic residues? What other heroine will understand him? Appreciate him? And this was what finally charmed me into love with Sophia, too. Not her strength and bravery in escaping her father. Not her intellect. Not her charming conversation. The fact that she loved Wilhelm as much as I did.

This was one of the most unexpected stories I've read in a long time. The repartee is sparkling and witty. The love is scandalous. The past is dangerous and hard on their heels. And Wilhelm is an unforgettable hero. I look forward to reading the next book from Moriah Densley.
