Nigerian novelist Okri's last book, The Famished Road, won the 1991 Booker Prize; his newest picks up where it left off. Once again we're bedazzled and bedeviled by Okri's phantasmagoric prose and the strange and wondrous sensibility of Azaro, a spirit-child living in a poor African village. The only child of a street hawker and a laborer, Azaro is possessed of, or by, an immense and unwieldy intelligence and is routinely overwhelmed by bewildering visions and revelations. His parents also dwell in this enigmatic extra dimension. When they have a falling out, both are sucked into realms full of supernatural menace and cosmic information. Azaro's father is enthralled by a crazy-eyed but graceful beggar girl, while his mother joins the followers of a witchy tavern owner named Madame Koto. As each family member wages his or her own mysterious hallucinatory battles, we recognize that all this strife and upheaval is connected to the stratifications of class warfare and the machinations of political power struggles. A sequel to the Booker Prize-winning The Famished Road (1992)- -again set in a mythic African village besieged by corruption and malevolent spirits--once more celebrates the stalwart human heart's struggle to endure. Azaro, the spirit-child who defied his fellow spirits by refusing to die, continues the story of his family. His father had won a great fight, but, as Azaro reminds us, ``nothing is ever finished, struggles are never truly concluded, sometimes we have to re-dream our lives, and life can always be used to create life.'' Ahead of the family lie the invisible seven mountains of the family's destiny, and all they can do is struggle forward to reach beyond the chaos that now engulfs them. Azaro's mother has been bewitched by the mysterious, all-powerful Madame Koto, who owns a bar in the village. It is a place always undergoing ``fabulous mutations,'' where every day is a celebration, ``an affirmation of her legend.'' Azaro and his father eventually get the mother back- -but she seems changed, weighed down by the many disasters that threaten the village: a murdered man haunts the streets; a ``Jackal-headed Masquerade'' riding a white horse briefly takes over and establishes ``its kingdom of fear''; Madame Koto becomes a dread invisible presence that saps all vitality; women are turned into antelopes; Azaro's father is blinded; and politicians court the villagers with poisoned foods. The times are very much out of joint--a point overly belabored in too many evocations of evil--but Azaro's father regains his sight in a healing that is as much of the spirit as the eyes themselves, and Azaro has his own epiphany when he sees the possibility of serenity beyond the present chaos. Okri conjures up the fabulous with the same ease as he affectingly details the ways of the human spirit in a lovingly evoked African setting teeming with life--both real and mythic. Ben Okri ist ohne weiteres einer der besten afrikanischen Schriftsteller. Seine Beschreibung sind magisch und wirklich wunderschön. Man fühlt sich in seiner magischen Darstellung verzaubert, aber auch gleichzeitig gerät die reale Welt des Elends in der nigerianischen Gesellschaft jener zeit nicht außer Sicht. Ihm gelingt es, beides ineinander so zu verwickeln, dass man nur sagen kann, ein wirklich erfolgreicher Roman, einer, der leider immer noch Gültigkeit im heutigen Nigeria findet, ist geboren.

One of the greatest literary works

Ben Okri's writing is magical, enthralling and captivating. He takes English writing to new heights. He is one of the greatest writers ever, and one sees it throughout the book. I was enchanted by the English which is delivered with an African flavor. Almost like a new language. This book is spiritual and out of this world on one level and yet down to earth in its portrayal of Nigerian village life. It's a must read for those who enjoy reading foreign authors. I read it over and over again.

A fable of survival and regeneration

Azaro, the spirit child, is a reluctant traveler in the realities of this world. In this moving story of love and transformation, his adventures begin with the depiction of his family. Under the pressure of poverty and myth, his mother departs to follow the legendary Madame Koto. An obsession for a beautiful beggar girl snares his father into forbidden visions. Set in an age of enchantment, their story takes place among the uphevals of a nation struggling to be born. There are mass political hallucinations, battles of contending forces in the realm of dreams, myserious disappearances, and the rise of the Jackal-headed Masquarade.
The tale dazzles with a picaresque temerity that bewilders with a concoction of folk-tale lyricism and the metaphysics of the heart. The human spirit prospers when best attuned to the forces of nature, the dignity of love and the strength to fashion oneself in spite of the overwhelming distress the decrees of social power force upon individuals. Morality is here on the side of the brave, the honest and those who appreciate beauty even when the ugly devours everything in sight.
With humor and wisdom, Okri tells of Azaro's father and how, drawing on the magic of courage, he undergoes the great penance of love. Through the unique experiences of this family we see that life lived with compassion and fire and serenity can vanquish the forces of oppression. Songs of Enchantment is a sequel to Booker Prize winning The Famished Road--one of the best novels I've ever read. But Ben Okri's attempt to outdo his first novel with this sequel had a disastrous result. He gives the readers an overdose of magic and supernatural. He describes one strange event after another (and almost in every succeeding sentence), distracting the readers and leaving them no time to savor one magical event at a time. (The Famished Road just has an amount of magic just enough for the readers to enjoy.) Ben Okri's prose has always been beautiful to read, but this time it didn't work. I couldn't find patience to finish the entire book.
