Two books in one. Cheaper than buying both separately, too.

Dating In The Dark: sometimes love just pretends to be blind.

Jason is single and has been for all of his 32 years. It’s depressing. But not as depressing as being told by his mother that he looks like Humpty Dumpty – after the accident. With a face that not even his own mother can love, it’s hardly surprising that he’ll try anything to get a woman to go out with him, even if it’s only for a single date.

With little interest in anything other than his quest for a woman and a nice bit of cod and chips, Jason needs to think outside the box if he’s going to find someone who’ll give him a chance. Along with Barry — his best mate — Jason comes up with the only thing he thinks will work: dating a blind woman. However, to do that, he needs to pretend he’s blind himself, which is a lot harder than you might think … especially when guide dogs are so hard to come by.

Eventually Jason’s efforts pay off and he meets Emma, a pretty professional with a host of friends. When he takes her out, they instantly hit it off. But will Jason be able to fool both Emma and her best friend Jerry into thinking he’s blind? With everything to play for, Jason faces the biggest challenge of his life, and nobody — especially not him — can see how it’ll all turn out.

Bride And Gloom: sometimes love is better off blind

In the first book of the ‘Sometimes love …’ series, ‘Dating in the Dark: sometimes love just pretends to be blind’, Jason Harding thought he’d committed the ultimate betrayal. No, not cheating; he pretended to be, you guessed it, blind. For Emma, the woman he was stupid enough to think he was fooling, it wasn’t anything like a betrayal. It was both sweet and sad at the same time and, as people in relationships have a tendency to do (if they don’t split up because of one party’s wild lies), Emma and Jason decide to get married.

Just how Jason manages to deal with the huge life change that is marriage is what this book is about. From getting his specially made suit tailored to his short height, to trying to keep a lid on his best man’s plans for a wild weekend in Liverpool, he is going to struggle to make to through to the wedding without having a full nervous breakdown. His second best friend, Boris, also returns in this book, although he has lost his taxi, his wife and his ability to seem sober even when he’s drunk six litres of vodka.

Jason is foolish enough to add Neil, Emma’s wayward cousin, and Terry, the owner of Jason’s favourite fish and chip shop, to his list of groomsmen. This is the fairly tragic band of men that are to ensure Jason makes it to the church on time, in possession of both his of his eyebrows and, of course, the rings …

It's a two-for package, and I thought the opener (Dating in the Dark) was stronger than the sequel (Bride and Gloom). In fact, I liked Part I of the story well enough to move straight ahead on to Part II without reading anything else in between. I enjoyed Pete Sortwell's cast of characters and (by and large) his sense of humor. Perhaps the greatest strength of the stories, however, is that they're warm and goodhearted.

See also my reviews on each of the parts.

This box set of two books starts out kind of slowly and it's hard to like the main character, but by the end you are happy he's found love and still keeps his sense of humor.

I got these when they were single books. I've reproduced the reviews I wrote then, which apply just as well for both:

This is a review of Dating In The Dark: sometimes love just pretends to be blind by Pete Sortwell

This is a great book - well written, very funny, and very believable, on so many levels.

The main character, Jason, clearly suffers from low self-esteem, and I don't just mean because he is only just above legal midget height.

He is desperate for love, but has been very unsuccessful. He believes this is because he is ugly and short, and not because of his amazingly self-centred personality. So he decides that the only option he has is to seek love by dating a blind person.

Put like that, you might think that there is no basis for comedy to be found in the disability of another. You would be WRONG!! This book is hilarious, almost from start to finish. Some of the hilarity is based on the lead character's clearly inept chat-up technique, some of it on the chat between Jason and his friend Barry, which is just spot-on, and some of it on the absurdity of the situations which Barry finds himself in.

Just enjoy it.

This is a review of Bride And Gloom: sometimes love is better off blind. (A Laugh Out Loud Comedy Sequel)

This book is the sequel to [=Dating In The Dark=] and again features Jason Harding, short of stature, and also short of self-esteem, as well as a host of characters, some of whom were also featured in the first book, but also introducing Neil, a psychotic relation of Jason's blind soon-to-be bride.

This book tells the story up to and including the wedding, but the action is mainly set around the stag do, which is to be held in Liverpool.

Jason still can't believe his luck in marrying Emma, who, though blind, is definitely the boss in this relationship.

Jason's pals, Barry, Terry and Boris, along with Jerry and the aforementioned Neil, organise the stag do, and off they all go on an hilarious adventure - will Jason make it to the church on time?

You'll have to read the whole story to find out.

Dating In The Dark: sometimes love just pretends to be blind.

Really enjoyed this book, as I have the others by the same author.
Easy to read, funny, silly and moving all at the same time. I look forward to reading more....

Bride and Gloom: sometimes love is better off blind.

I was pleased to see what happened after the first book, Dating In The Dark. Jason still has his quirks. I suppose that just proves that you can take the loser out the man but not the man out of the loser mentality. Written from the male perspective is a refreshing change from the normal type of romantic comedy that I've become a little bored with lately.
