Within hours of arriving in Iraq a grenade bounced off one of the battalion's landrovers, rolled underneath and detonated. Like some post-apocalyptic Mad Max nightmare, the place had gone to hell in a handcart. Ein wirklich packender Bericht aus erster Hand über die Kriegserlebnisse einer Scharfschützen-Gruppe "nach" dem Irak-Krieg. Gleichzeitig erhält man einen sehr realistischen Eindruck, wie es im britischen Militär zugeht. Eine Warnung an den Leser, bei dem Englisch keine Muttersprache ist: Der Stil des Buches strotzt vor Militär-Jargon und englischer Umgangssprache. Bei mir hat die Wikipedia mitgeholfen zu erkennen, wann von Waffen die Rede war (die meist entweder mit Spitznamen oder mit technischen Begriffen bezeichnet werden, die dem Nicht-Militär nicht bekannt sind) und wann es rein umgangssprachlich um etwas anderes ging. Der Spannung des Buches tut das keinen Abbruck, man fiebert förmlich mit dem Protagonisten mit. Deutliche Leseempfehlung.

Ehrlich, hart und teilweise komisch ! 17. August 2009

Ich wußte zuerst nicht recht, ob ich 4 oder 5 Sterne vergeben sollte... aber wann bekommt ein Buch 5 Sterne ? Ganz klar: wenn es einen so fesselt, das man kaum erwarten kann, was auf den nächsten Seiten passiert. Sgt. Dan Mills schreibt überzeugend, realitätsnah und (teilweise erschreckend !) ehrlich über seine "Tour" im Irak. Die Soldaten machen keinen Hehl daraus, das sie spätestens nach dem ersten Feindkontakt regelrecht "angefixt" sind. Hartes Buch, aber dennoch sehr sympathisch geschrieben, und so, das man die Leute vor seinem geistigen Auge sieht... mit dem ein oder anderen typisch, britischen Witz. Nach "Die Männer von Bravo Two Zero" mein neues Lieblingsbuch.

Sehr spannend geschrieben, ist zwar ein realer Kriegsbericht, liest sich aber fast wie ein Actionfilm.
Schockierend, wie mitreissend Krieg sein kann, aber sehr interessant mal was über die Menschen zu erfahren die da unten täglich einem Überlebenskampf ausgesetzt waren/sind
