Two Great Smurf Tales 12. Januar 2011
Von tvtv3 - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Twenty years after THE SMURFS cartoon was canceled by NBC, the Smurfs are making a major comeback. Part of that comeback is the collection of the original 27 Smurfs comics and publishing them in English. THE SMURF KING is the 3rd book in the series and features two separate stories, "The Smurf King" and "The Smurfony".

In "The Smurf King", Papa Smurf leaves the village for a few weeks to gather some Euphorbia leaves. Without any leader, the village soon breaks out in a series of arguments and fights. They decide to have an election to vote who should be their leader. An unnamed Smurf makes a series of promises and uses some political tactics to ensure he gets almost all of the votes. He is elected their leader. However, instead of Papa Smurf's paternal wisdom and leadership, the elected Smurf dons gold garb and proclaims that he must be addressed as the Smurf King. The Smurf King makes enemies and those who resist are either imprisoned or sneak into the forest to join the resistance. The conflict soon leads to an all-out war.

In "The Smurfony", Harmony Smurf is rejected from the Smurf orchestra because he plays so badly. Harmony is saddened because he longs to be a part of the orchestra. While pondering his fate in the woods, he meets a fairy who gives him an instrument "she" promises will make him play well. The fairy is actually Gargamel in disguise and the instrument he gives Harmony is a turlusiphon which puts all the other Smurfs into s deep sleep. Harmony realizes what has happened and sneaks into Gargamel's lab to look for a cure.

THE SMURF KING is easy to read. It's fun and entertaining. I vaguely remember "The Smurfs" episode based upon THE SMURF KING, but instead of an unknown Smurf who is elected Smurf King, the cartoon featured Brainy Smurf as the King. The strips in the book are full of bright color and a person can almost understand the whole story without reading any of the dialogue. Adults who grew up in 1980s watching THE SMURFS will probably enjoy THE SMURF KING, but it's also a good book for kids who enjoy comics or as a way to introduce children to The Smurfs.

Same story, modern dialogue script 29. Oktober 2011

I first owned this comic book with its original title "King Smurf" when I was watching the Smurfs cartoon show back in the 1980s, and admittedly I enjoyed this version more than the cartoon show episode it was adapted into. Despite that Smurfette wasn't part of the original comic book story, I think the nameless Smurf who became King Smurf was a much better King Smurf and a much plausible one than Brainy was in the cartoon show. Given how most of the Smurfs would rather bonk Brainy in the head with a mallet or give him a quick flight out of the village for his endless lecturing and nagging his fellow Smurfs, the cartoon episode version would have been better off portraying Brainy as he was in the original story instead of trying to put him into a role where he still gets zero respect even in fancy royal garb. Besides this nitpick, I still think the original comic book story was funnier and had more going on in it.

Anyway, the updated version keeps the original story as it is more or less, but modernizes the dialogue as to how the Smurf characters would sound in 2010. I still prefer calling him "King Smurf", though.

Besides this story, the book also has the bonus story which is the original comic book version of "Smurphony In 'C'", only simply renamed "The Smurfony". It pretty much plays out like the cartoon show episode with some additional stuff left out of the episode, but again Smurfette isn't part of the original story.

Volume three in Papercutz reprints of classic SMURFS comics contains two stories. First is the 40-page epic "THE SMURF KING." The plot of the story is basically what will the Smurfs do about their leadership void when Papa Smurf is away? Quite an entertaining political satire that you might not expect to find in a Smurfs story! Next up is a shorter (20 page) tale that fits more with what you might remember from the 1980s cartoon series. Gargamel is after the Smurf's secret village and he exploits a Smurf who is depressed about his lack of musical talent to seek his revenge in "The Smurfony."

Okay, i really struggled between 4 and 5 stars... The story is great!!! Fun, funny, and cool. (way cooler than the stupid movie that came out recently...) My daughters (kindergarten/pre-k) saw them on our table, and immediately was drawn to them, and started flipping through them looking at the pictures.
My kindergarten child now sits with me and is starting to ask me what certain words are in the speach bubbles, which I am so happy about, because she is getting interested in reading!

Why it did not get 5 stars: eeeehh.... I remember this book being printed in a 'magazine sized' booklet... This one is considerably smaller, and they simply shrunk each page. This does make the print very small... I would guess around an 8 font. I'm hoping that since my girls are so small, their eyes will be able to read it easier than I...
Wish they were normal sized...
