American Girls' Gift to Girls with Aspergers! 15. März 2012
Von DisneyDenizen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I came across this book by accident when I was looking for just one more for the 4-for-3 promotion and about fell off my chair.

My sixteen-year-old daughter has Aspergers. She LOVES these American Girl books, reads them over and over, and has learned a great deal from them about appropriate social interaction.

I thoroughly reviewed the "search inside this book" link and am convinced that this book is PERFECT for girls with Aspergers. It appears to cover much of the same ground that her speech therapist drilled her in endlessly, but in a far more engaging manner. They had me at "25 things to say after 'Hi'". It is so difficult at times for an Aspie to carry on or continue a conversation. If my daughter memorizes half these things (and she has a prodigious Aspie memory), she will be able to do much better holding up her end of a conversation.

I immediately recommended this book to my daughter's therapist for her other patients.

Nice Social Graces Learning Tool 13. Oktober 2011
Von W. Brown - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
My 9 year old daughter & I enjoy reading the American Girl guideline books together. Not only does my daughter enjoy this particular book, the book makes her think and ask questions. Knowing What to Say is an interactive book that covers many realistic social situations and offers solutions. The book is age appropriate, and my daughter can relate to the examples it presents.

Wish This Book Was Around When I was in Middle School 9. Januar 2012
Von Debbie S. Glade - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Before I stared reading A Smart Girl's Guide to Knowing What to Say: Finding the Words to Fit Any Situation ($9.95, American Girl, ages 10 and up) by Patti Kelley Criswell, I couldn't imagine how this book could actually be specific enough to help a slew of different young readers. Wow, was I surprised! In fact, where was this book while I was going through those awkward adolescent years?

This guide is divided into topics, such as, "Asking for what you want," "Sad times," "That hurts," I'm embarrassed," and others. Within each topic are descriptions of specific situations. For example, on the page entitled, "If a friend lets you down," there are seven specific possibilities. If your classmates are chatting about a slumber party you're not invited to, or if your friend takes something you said the wrong way, you'll know exactly what to say to them. The book has some colorful cartoon-like illustrations, by Angela Martini, and lots of speech bubbles, making it easy to read.

Obviously no single book can cover every awkward situation that may arise, but this one is sure to give an adolescent girl a good foundation for gracefully handling potentially challenging circumstances. Simply said, it is not only helpful, but it's also quite entertaining. And let's face it, even as adults we don't always find the right words.

There's a whole bunch of other Smart Girl's Guides by American Girl, and I bet there are a whole bunch of middle grade readers out there who'd love to read them all.

NOTE: This book was a winner of the 2011 National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Honors Award

Daughter read it in less than an hour.. 9. September 2013
Von A. Fleming - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
My sweet pre-teen has social anxiety and has been really struggling with friendships at school. We don't have insurance right now so counseling isn't an option (although she is on low dose Prozac from her pediatrician). Anyway, she came to me the other night in tears about how paralyzing it has been around girls in her school and how she feels so hopeless and doesn't know what to do. SO I jumped on Amazon and bought this book and 2 others to try to help her. When the arrived, she was embarrassed as hell and didn't want to read them. I told her to go in her room, shut the door, and just take a look and if she truly thought they were worthless, we could send them back. She came out about two hours later and this book had been her favorite one. She was really excited at the ideas the book gave her on things to say in really specific situations. Not just to her friends, but to teachers and other adults too. They help with bullying situations (which, thank God, we haven't encountered yet except for some passive aggressive BS) and with just small talk in the hallway with friends or how to reply to unexpected snark. She has since put a few of these in her mind back and she said it really takes the pressure off trying to come up with the "right" thing to say. Is it a immediate and perfect answer to kids who are shy/social anxiety. No. But for her, it seemed to be full of great starting points that simply made the difference between having some small positive interactions and being completely silent and disappearing into the wallpaper. (For the record, I am not a fan of the whole American Girl doll line - I think they are pretentious - But I love both this book and The American Girl Body Book....both great for every girl's bookshelf.)

Great book for preteens 7. Juli 2011
Von Lindsey W - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is fun, colorful, informative, and easy to read. It will easily hold the attention of preteen girl and give her some great advice on interacting with others. With so many young people missing out on the art of conversation, this is a great tool for parents to give their girls in order to push them in the right direction. It has a lot of different categories, such as "what to say to a mean friend", "what to say when you've hurt someone", "what to say to someone who is grieving", "what to say to someone you just met", etc. It talks about the importance of body language, and even gives tips on keeping conversation going instead of giving one word answers. Great tool!
