When photographer Eloise Leyden spent a year travelling around India, she became fascinated not only by the vibrant beauty of the land and the warmth of its people, but also by the country's sizeable population of stray dogs. Leyden's empathy with animals is captured perfectly in this colourful, touching collection of images of dogs roaming the bustling city streets, scavenging in markets, basking on sandy beaches and sleeping just about anywhere. Different aspects of the dogs' daily life are chronicled: a sadhu feeds an eager pack of street dogs in Rishikesh, while a puppy begs patiently for scraps from a customer at a food stall in Varanasi and, in Calcutta, a small gang snoozes peacefully together on a pile of sandbags. Leyden, who undertook voluntary work for several animal charities during her travels, reveals the close bond that often develops between the dogs and their fellow street dwellers - humans and animals alike - and documents the efforts of individuals and groups to promote the welfare of the strays.

A Lovely Tender Book.

This is a beautiful little book. Superb photographs: poignant, tender, and heart warming. It is wonderful value for money. Recently there have been many dog books cynically churned out to capture what was believed to be a waiting market. This book is not one of them! This is an honest, substantial little book that will be cherished and kept. A joy for those who simply love dogs, (or India, or fine photography) - and of great research value for all those interested in the history and culture of the Domestic Dog. It provides a record of the natural form that a dog is 'meant' to be. There are far more photographs than I expected for such a bargain price (224 pages), and a lovely Indian feel to the design. I whole-heartedly recommend 'Slum Dogs of India'. Libby Hall ('Prince','Prince II','Postcard Dogs' and 'These Were Our Dogs')

Having been to India and seen all the wonderful dogs I loved this book!
.....I originally received a copy as a gift (purchased in London) and just had to give a dog loving friend a copy....she loved it too! It very accurately shows the life of town and country dogs....in wonderfully interesting settings......Despite their lack of ownership they are extremely proud and this book is able to convey this....For anyone who happens to be in Udaipur do visit the doggie rescue....they are always looking for volunteers or just visit....they are doing a tremendous job of helping the strays....especially animals that have been injured or have mange.....a book I would very strongly recommend....the text...and the beautiful pictures!.....A lovely gift to give someone or to keep for yourself.
