Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.com

This darkly funny look at growing up male in America is narrated by chubby, 14-year-old Elvin Bishop, who describes, with sublime sarcasm, his increasingly painful efforts to find his appropriate athletic "slot." Mature readers will find this unusual sports story both hilarious and poignant; in a starred review, Booklist wrote, "this wry, thoughtful book speaks with wisdom and heart to the victim and the outsider in us all." An ALA Best Book for Young Adults. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Booklist

Gr. 8^-10. If Lynch wasn't fat when he was growing up, he certainly seems to know how it feels to be an overweight kid, and if he wasn't into sports, he certainly seems to know all the play-by-play anyway. His expertise comes vividly to the fore in his latest novel, a funny, poignant coming-of-age story. The background is a Christian Brothers' camp that emphasizes sports participation as preparation for high school--" All fine young men here can succeed if they are properly guided to the right sports activity." Camp is hell for 13-year-old fat kid Elvin Bishop. Suffering aches and pains at every turn, he wends his way through the camp's activity lineup--football, baseball, wrestling (which actually makes some sense to him)--until he reaches rock bottom, the Arts sector, where he finally discovers it's okay to be just who he is. As much about friendship as it is about self-acceptance and sports, the story also explores Elvin's relationship with his two best buddies: serious, self-satisfied Mikie, who fits in everywhere, and insecure Frank, who compromises his dignity for a place at the top of the social ladder. Lynch proves himself adept at writing broad, physical comedy (the wrestling sequences are laugh-out-loud funny), and there's plenty of scathing sarcasm, irreverence, self-deprecation, and dark humor to keep things lively. Though many, the characters are extremely well drawn, and their occasional raunchy language and behavior seem well in keeping with the "macho" atmosphere of the camp that is Lynch's target for parody. The dialogue is smooth and sassy and crackles with realism, and without sensationalizing, Lynch recognizes some of the sexual issues that mark the age group. As finely tuned as any of Lynch's novels for older teens, this wry, thoughtful book speaks with wisdom and heart to the victim and the outsider in us all. Stephanie Zvirin

(...)this book is a great fit for teens and the awards earnedare well deserved.

Elvin is just starting high school, but beforeschool starts the directors at his school send all the boys to the St. Paul's Seminary Retreat Center, so they can be "placed" in the appropriate "slot" for sports teams at their new school. Elvin doesn't fit into a slot, he knows this and tried to tell the directors that he is "unslottable". The directors want to help Elvin find his slot. A great book that will leave you laughing at Elvin's wise-cracking remarks, especially in the letters home to his mom. Elvin's story continues in _Extreme Elvin_. END

Am I the only one who questions the appropiateness of the language in this book? It was brought to my attention by a student who said "I can't read this book. It has bad words in it?" This is what the ALA recommends? I don't know that it is even appropriate for high school students.

I thought it was a good book because there was a lot of swearing , and because it was a good book. The reading level is about 8th grade level. The book is fiction. The main charecters are Eugene, Elvin, Mike, and Frank. Elvin goes to camp and spends 3 weeks there. in camp Elvin has to try all these diffrent sectore. He starts off at football, then baseball, then basketball then at the end he goes to art sector because he didnt find any other sector he liked. The book takes place in New York. The book is educational because if you are going to do sports when you grow up you can see the pain of them.
