Kate Everett is about to begin her “second act.” She’s been a widow for eight years and thinks it might be time to start looking for someone to share her life with again. She quits her high-pressure job for something that will allow her more leisure time. She gets rid of the huge family home and moves into a fabulous condo that’s smaller and easier to manage. She’s pretty much got the rest of her life figured out. All she has to do is sit back, relax, and let the pieces fall into place.

But her real life never gets the memo. First, her son moves back in with her—along with his girlfriend. Her dream job falls through, leaving her unemployed. Her mother, whom she hadn’t spoken to in years, can no longer live alone and has to move into her basement. And her only daughter is planning the smallest and simplest wedding in the history of all weddings, much to Kate’s dismay.

Kate thinks that she and Jake, her former college love who has reemerged on an online dating site, of all places, can build something real, and that maybe her happy ending is in front of her at last. But the arrival of Edward, her daughter’s future father-in-law, presents Kate with an unexpected choice.

It looks like real happiness may require a slight change of plan.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Dee Ernst was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Morristown. She attended Marshall University, where she majored in journalism. Several years, career changes, and a few daughters later, she was listening to the Joan Hamburg Show, where a guest made the suggestion that if you want to be happy, you should go back to what you were doing when you were ten and try to make it a career. Since Dee was writing stories when she was ten, she decided to give writing another go. After three novels and many rejection letters, she self-published Better Off Without Him. Her next book, A Different Kind of Forever, was released in April of 2012. In the spring of 2013, she signed with Montlake Publishing, which re-released Better Off Without Him and launched her third title, A Slight Change of Plan, that fall. Though Dee finds a lot in common with all her heroines, she is happily married and living in New Jersey.

Book: A Slight Change of Plan
Author: Dee Ernst
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Length: Approximately 352 Pages

I've put off writing my review for A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN by DEE ERNST for quite a few days. The reason is simple. I just don't want to face the fact that I've finished it. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! I just hate that it had to end, and I want Ms. Ernst to know that I WANT MORE FROM THESE CHARACTERS! I'm begging you to write a follow up.

Kate Everett is ready to simplify her life. Her husband died eight years ago, her children are grown and out of the house and she has a stressful job as a tax attorney. She decides to sell the big house and buy a condo, quit her job for something she loves to do and start dating again.

That's when the fun begins! Her youngest son and his girlfriend move into the upstairs of her new condo. Her mom that hasn't spoken a word to Kate in years can no longer live alone, so she has to move into Kate's basement. Her first love and the man she never got over after he dumped her in college has just "waved" to her on the Internet dating site her sister signed her up on.

I highly recommend this book for all women, but if you are over the age of forty-five, this is a MUST read! The interactions between Kate and her friends and family had me laughing so hard, I had to put my Kindle down because I could no longer see the screen through the tears of laughter. This is a superbly written account of the life of a mature woman and I WANT MORE!!!!!

I read an ARC copy of A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN by Dee Ernst and now I have to wait until it's released before I can gift a copy to my friends. I'm counting the days down because I know that they will love it as much as I did. This is one of the few books I've read that will stay on my Kindle instead of moving it to my cloud for much needed room because I want it close at hand to read over and over.

If you liked Steel Magnolias, I'm going to go out on a limb here and tell you that you're going to enjoy this book even more. My reasoning for this is that I think one of the things I enjoyed most about A SLIGHT CHANGE OF PLAN was the fact that it did not slam men as so many books or movies do when the author writes about mature women. Great job, Ms. Ernst! Again, I am begging you for more from these characters. PLEASE?

What a fun story! There's nothing like family. This story is a story that brings light to your heart. You'll smile and laugh and cry and wonder throughout the book. Do you remember your first love? Do you wonder what if? This book is like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Pick up a copy today. You'll be glad you did!

I received a complimentary copy provided by author/publisher for an honest review. No spoilers - just a general outline.

Dee Ernst has done it again. After the first 100 pages, I actually got out a highlighter to mark favorite favorite lines and conversations. At one point I was laughing so hard I dropped the book and just couldn't stop. (Y'all will know where, when you read about Marco and Cheryl's date.) An honest, true-to-life book about a 55 year old widow, her slightly nutty family, her fabulous friends, and the re-emergence of the love of her life, who dumped her in college. I wish I was part of Kate's circle.

I fell immediately in love with all the characters (well, maybe Tom not so much), and cannot wait for this to be released so my pre-ordered copy on Kindle arrives and I can re-read it, highlighting some of my favorite passages ("My Italian mother belonged to one of the more complicated religious affiliations - Lapsed Catholicism)for all to see. I pulled out her other two books to re-read and comment on, since I rated but didn't leave comments. She is definitely on my pre-order list, books sight unseen.

My rating: 4.5 of 5 ⭐️

With her daughter preparing for her wedding and her youngest son getting ready to graduate from University, widow Kate Everett decides it is finally time for her to make some changes. First of all she wants to downsize. Everything. She gives up her job as a high profile tax lawyer, hoping to do something a little less time consuming, and she sells the big house her kids were raised in and buys a much smaller, but fabulous condo in a luxury townhouse complex. Kate has even, albeit reluctantly, signed up with an online dating site. It's time to move on with her life! Easy going from here on in.....

Of course, the ink hasn't dried on the contracts for the house, or her youngest announces he wants to move back home, and not just that, he is bringing his girlfriend, the one Kate knew nothing about until just then, with him. That wasn't the end of it, the perfect part time job she had lined up suddenly lost it's funding and no longer existed. Then there was the wave hello, on the dating website, from the man who crushed her heart thirty odd years ago.....the big-love-lost, who came right before the man she ended up marrying. That certainly had been nowhere in her plans......

And last, but in no way least, there is her mother, with whom she has not communicated in years, because the woman can carry a mean grudge, who after a nasty fall can no longer stay in her own house and needs someone to look after her. guessed it, Kate has the space and the time, and even though mommy dearest does her best to boycott the hell out of the transition, she ends up in Kate's basement. So much for that peaceful 'empty nest' Kate had been dreaming about.

And naturally, with all of this unscheduled and unplanned activity swirling around in her newly chaotic life, her heretofore non-existing dating life suddenly becomes all kinds of active. There is a very nice, but slightly possessive gentleman she is able to get her feet wet with. Then we have her long lost love, Jake who is eager to make up for lost times and right past wrongs. And finally there is the new arrival Edward, her daughter' father-in-law to be, who has just flown in from the UK to attend their wedding.

And Kate thought her life was slowly emptying out.......she has more people now then she knows what to do with!!

Brilliantly entertaining story in which I can recognize aspects of my own life, but much, much more amusing!!!

A wonderful variety of characters, for whom we can probably find similar individuals in our own circles. Kate's interactions with her children reminds me of myself with mine in so many ways. The descriptions of her 'talks' with her mother....or rather dialogues, since her mother doesn't say much back, are hilarious and even some part of that dynamic is familiar.

I loved the matter of fact way and humour with which Kate deals with all the roadblocks thrown in her path. She could finally plan for her future at this point, but absolutely nothing goes how she thought it would; nothing comes to fruition. Most of the responding she does by instinct, used, as a mother, to reacting off the cuff when an unexpected situation presents itself. But it's more than that, she adapts and molds with grace, good nature and a smidgen of 'evil', while still trying to make the right choices for her this time around!!!

Dee Ernst shows great insight in issues of all ages, genders, preferences and mind sets and is able to display it all in a delightful way in her characters. This story was an absolute treat to read!!!

✨A vibrant, touching and witty account of the life that happens while you make other plans.✨

In the spirit of full disclosure, I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Now let me tell you how and why I got it: I begged for it. I saw that the author had a few available up for review and I literally pleaded "Pick me, pick me" and much to my surprise Ms Ernst did!
I don't need to give you a full synopsis of the story - you can read that above. What you need to know is that if you have a sense of humor and are breathing you will laugh out loud when you read this book. If you're of a certain age - I'd say around 35 and older, but I dont want to exclude anyone - you're going to identify with some one in this story. If you're from Jersey and you run into the City every once in a while, you'll really appreciate it - but that is certainly not a pre-requisite. That's because this story is written in the language you know, spoken by the by people that you grew up with, the ones you hang around with now, the ones you raised, are currently raising or by which you were raised. It makes you realize you're not alone with your rebounding kids, a sister that 's also your best ally (Hi Cali!) your sometimes annoying mother (not mine!) and a goofy best friend that you can tell your secrets too (Hi Char!) especially when it involves the details of your college romance and the lingering questions from a hasty breakup (Hi, oops, almost had me!). This is a story that makes you say, 'Oh, other people do that too!' and 'When did she peek into my life?' and gives comfort in the realization that the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray but sooner or later it all makes a great story! One that gets even better when sprinkled liberally with some cold White Wine.

At the risk of keeping you from reading this book for another minute, I'll tell you why I begged for a copy of this book: Earlier this summer I downloaded a copy of Better Of Without Him and was instantly smitten with Ms. Ernst's writing style. Next I devoured A Different Kind of Forever. The cast of characters in all of Ms Ernst books are so 'people you know' or 'people you wish you knew' and they instantly feel like friends and are really fun reads. Just like the reviewer above, all future books will go on pre-order status the way I did with this one even though I HAD A COPY and I am the queen of FREE Kindle Books! So curl up on the couch, take it to the beach (down the shore) or sneak a chapter or 4 in while you're waiting in the car at the next after-school practice and you'll have a good giggle - I guarantee it.

Don't forget to like her facebook page and you may be the next in line for a sneak peek at what's coming next.
