From Publishers Weekly

Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, summer 1967: "a place of innocence ruled by corruption." John "The Count," Tommy "Butter," Michael "Spots" and the author, "Shakes, " went to parochial school, stole anything that wasn't nailed down and ran errands for the local mobster, King Benny. It was all fun and games, but that ended the day a childish prank went wrong, a man almost died and the kids became "sleepers"?inmates of the Wilkinson Home for Boys in upstate New York. The boys were brutalized by sadistic prison guards; beatings, rape and sodomy happened daily. The author and his pals survived Wilkinson, but their lives were permanently scarred by their detention. John and Tommy became mobsters. One evening in 1980, they happened upon their chief tormentor and shot him dead in a Hell's Kitchen pub. At trial they were prosecuted by their old friend, Michael, now a district attorney, who would purposely lose the trial, and in the process exorcise their childhood demons. Although the author uses fictitious names to protect identities, this is a riveting story delicious with revenge as he details how every guard that brutalized them was exposed. In a memoir that reads like a novel, Carcaterra (A Safe Place) mixes horror, laughter and pathos to show that justice, like love, is in the eye of the beholder. From Booklist

A book with a punch equal to its publicity hype! Journalist Carcaterra tells with gripping force of his days growing up in the tough New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in the 1960s (the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty). He and his three closest buddies engaged in petty crime until the day their tricks got out of hand and escalated into a major offense, for which they were sent to a juvenile home in upstate New York. They were tormented during their months there, not by other young inmates but by their adult guards, who brutalized them relentlessly in a program of horror and torture that included rape. Once out, once grown up, one of the boys became a lawyer, and through a bizarre twist of events worthy of being turned into a movie (in fact, the movie rights have been sold, with Barry Levinson lined up as director), he, Carcaterra, and the other two friends expose the horrible wrongs they suffered in that detention home. Both difficult to read and difficult to put down, this book will garner lots of attention, and as a result, readership demand will be high. Brad Hooper

5.0 von 5 Sternen Revenge. Sweet lasting revenge. 9. August 1997
Von Ein Kunde
Every time each boy was hit in the face, the arm, the back. You felt it. It was written so you would. So you'd understand what fuelled the anger of four boys; what ruined their life beyond repair, once they were freed from the Wilkinson's Home for Boys. People always say that two wrongs don't make a right, that you should go on your way, people will get what they deserve. But is it really true? Does it really count as realistic when such torture is inflicted on you, your innocence lost and you can't do a thing about it because you're on the other side of the law; you're the criminals and whatever the guards do goes unnoticed, uncared for.
Lorenzo Caracterra puts these questions forward to you in "Sleepers". An excellently written probe through to his heart on his feelings and reflections.
It successfully allows us to feel every blow, and sink into the suspense. It makes us visualise the streets of Hell's Kitchen and know the victory when revenge was extracted in such a clever way. You could hear the sound of justice and see it through Carcaterra's eyes.
"Sleepers" is a book that will touch your soul, and question your values. It leaves you wondering what you would do in such a situation; and wonder who really is justified.
It gives you a bite sized chunk on the sweetness of revenge, when some books don't even let you get a proper taste

5.0 von 5 Sternen Ist nicht wieder aus der Hand zu legen. 18. Dezember 2001

3.0 von 5 Sternen Did this really happen? I dunno... 11. Januar 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Carcaterra sure knows how to write in such a way that your attention is riveted to the page. I finished this book in one day. But, as far as this being a true autobiographical account of his life, or being a great book, period, I have my doubts.
To me, the best part about the book were the little slices of life in Hell's Kitchen that were presented as background information in the first 150 pages. Although I was raised a thousand miles away from New York, I could certainly identify with Carcaterra's descriptions of how deep the bonds of friendship can go, and the simple joy of being young and foolish, getting in trouble, learning, and growing.
Then when the real trouble began, when the four boys were sent upstate for committing their crime, the book started to get a little out of hand.
First, these four boys were so morally bankrupt that I had trouble sympathizing with them. Carcaterra seems to make no apologies for their behavior, but at the same time he writes in such a way so as to make us admire them. What? Admire four street punks who steal and fight just as naturally as sleeping and breathing? No, sorry. "You deserve your punishment," was my thought.
Things really got ludicrous when, years later, they managed to completely manipulate drug dealers, the police department, and the American justice system in their quest for revenge. It made for quick, gee-whiz reading, with pure visceral satisfaction (if not intellectual), but it sounded too much like a fantasy to me.
So yes, it was enjoyable from a sensationalistic point of view. And who among us wouldn't take delight in seeing truly nasty people get their just desserts? But "Sleepers" is simply not that great. Compared to something like "In Cold Blood," it's kid stuff.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The BEST book I've read! 5. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
The book Sleepers takes place on the streets of Hell's Kitchen in New York. It's about four teenage boys who grew up in a neighborhood full of gangs and mobs. The four boys grew up together and they had planned on growing old together. This plan would've went through successfully, but an event that they caused would change their lives forever. Their daily games of cheating and stealing were inherited by their "leader" Fat Mancho. Fat Mancho's a man, that no one dared to mess with because he was the most powerful man known to Hell's Kitchen. Sometimes the pranks they pulled got out-of-hand especially their last one that sent them all to a home for boys for more than a year. After serving their sentances, they were released. This home for boys that was suppose to "set them straight" was the cause of two cold-blooded killers that were paid to kill, a lawyer with a heart of gold, and a newspaper worker that believed he'd be in his dead end job for all eternity. If you want to know more about this book, you'll have to read it on your own! If you're not the "reading type," then you can just watch the movie! There's so many great details that I decided to save! I usually read horrors or mysteries, so this is a mojor change. I'm extremely glad I chose this book because one I began reading it, I could barely put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone!
