Even for those not fascinated with aerospace, the building of these planes is intriguing as he details the secret missions and machinations of the CIA, Operation Desert Storm, and the like. A top-flight aerospace engineer's engrossing reminiscences of an eventful career in the service of the CIA and US military at the height of the Cold War. With a graceful assist from Janos (co-author of Chuck Yeager's best-selling 1985 autobiography, not reviewed), Rich offers an episodic (probably vetted) account of his nearly 40 years with Lockheed's Advanced Development Projects, an ultrasecret operation better known as the Skunk Works (a name borrowed from the Dogpatch still in Al Capp's ``L'il Abner'' comic strip). During his apprenticeship, the author (who headed ADP from 1975 until his retirement at 65 in 1990) helped design, build, test, and launch the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbird, America's enviably successful spy planes. On his watch, the Skunk Works produced the first jet fighter-bomber to employ stealth technology, the oddly configured F-117A, which earned its wings in the unfriendly skies above the Persian Gulf. In addition to Rich's own recital, the text includes commentary from colleagues, intelligence agents, Pentagon brass, test pilots, and others, which puts the narrator's knack for advancing the state of the aerospace art into clearer perspective. While he accentuates the positive, the author does not shy from recalling certain of his unit's turkeys, including a remote- controlled reconnaissance drone that seldom returned from missions over enemy territory; an aircraft fueled by liquid hydrogen (whose explosive power could have blown its users to bits); and a stealth picket ship (eventually sunk by the Navy's missile frigate lobby). Nor does Rich fail to settle old scores with, among others, pols more concerned with their next election than national security. Not one to hold a grudge, however, he closes with some uncommonly sensible suggestions on how US taxpayers could get more bang for their procurement buck in the parlous times ahead. An insider's accessible, informative take on what's needed to get futuristic hardware to contemporary flight lines and launching pads. Das Buch beschreibt die Geschichte des Lockheed Advanced Development Programs alias Skunk Works aus Sicht des zweiten Leiters Ben Rich.
Die Beschreibungen sind sehr lebendig und die Mitarbeiter von Skunk Works treten in Erscheinung speziell auch deren erster Leiter Kelly Johnson. Der rote Faden der Erzählung sind die Ereignisse um die "großen" Projekte wie SR-71 Blackbird und F-117 Nighthawk. Gleichzeitig werden die Ereignisse auch in den politischen Kontext gesetzt, denn die Projekte sind meist mit politischen Ereignissen des Kalten Krieges eng verknüpft.
Sehr empfehlenswert wegen der tiefen Einblicke in eine bemerkenswerte Organisation und außergewöhnliche Konstrukteure.

Even if the authors did get a fact or two wrong (the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was NOT America's first supersonic jet, as the book erroneously states about 3 times. The F-86 and F-100 were both supersonic and preceded the F-104), and even though Leo Janos' touch was perhaps a bit too evident here and there (darned near everybody in the book talks in the vernacular of Chuck Yeager -- or was that Janos all along? -- with perhaps a few too many "goddams" thrown in for effect) the book is a great read.
It abruptly yanks the alluring veil of secrecy off of the Skunk Works and shows you the basic, raw underbelly of what it took to design, build, fly and sell the most advanced aircraft the world has yet seen.
Unfortunately, as a definitive document on the Skunk Works' achievements and historical implications of their aircraft, the book is but a tease. The story of the amazing SR-71 alone is worthy of a book-length treatment. But as a preface, "Skunk Works" is a great lead-in to other relevant books such as:
"Operation Overflight", by Francis Gary Powers with Curt Gentry; "Mayday: Eisenhower, Khrushchev, and the U-2 Affair", by Michael R. Beschloss; "Sled Driver: Flying the World's Fastest Jet", by Brian Shul (SR-71 pilot)

Ben R. Rich does such a good job of describing the events and people that were involved in the U-2, the stealth fighter, and the Blackbird, that you feel you are on the team. You get to find the problems and help solve them with unique (sometimes-simpler) solutions. And it is over way too soon.
This makes you wonder what they are up to today?

Fascinating book!

this is a great book
this is a very good book about about the divelopment of some of the worlds most advanced warplanes. if you like documentary style book's you will love this one.
