13. Mai 2014 A Lincoln Rhyme Novel
In his classic thriller The Bone Collector, Jeffery Deaver introduced readers to Lincoln Rhyme-the nation's most renowned investigator and forensic detective.

Now, a new killer is on the loose: a criminal inspired by the Bone Collector. And Rhyme must untangle the twisted web of clues before the killer targets more victims-or Rhyme himself.

The killer's methods are terrifying. He stalks the basements and underground passageways of New York City. He tattoos his victims' flesh with cryptic messages, using a tattoo gun loaded with poison, resulting in an agonizing, painful death.

When a connection is made to the Bone Collector-the serial killer who terrorized New York more than a decade ago-Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are immediately drawn into the case.

Rhyme, Sachs, and the NYPD must race against time to answer the many questions the investigation uncovers: Whom will the killer attack next? What is the message behind the victims' tattoos? Does the killer's own inking--a fanged centipede sporting a woman's face--hold any significance? And what is his ultimate mission?

As time runs out, Rhyme discovers that the past has returned to haunt him in the most troubling way imaginable...

5.0 von 5 Sternen DEAVER - A MASTER THRILLER WRITER 14. Mai 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Jeffrey Deaver fans are rejoicing as the acclaimed author has brought us a sequel to his best known and voraciously read thriller The Bone Collector. In that novel we were introduced to Lincoln Rhyme, our country’s best known forensic detective. He’s clever, intuitive, and persistent when it comes to solving the most puzzling of crimes. Rhyme’s mettle is tested in The Skin Collector.

There’s a killer on the loose in NYC, well, not literally on the loose because he prowls the underground passages in Soho, just south of Greenwich Village. These tunnels crisscross the neighborhood - at one time used for transporting goods they’re abandoned now and perfect for the use of a mad killer, Billy Haven.

Billy doesn’t violate his victims, flesh is of no interest to him; “ was skin that Billy loved.” To test it he would pinch a girl’s skin between his thumb and forefinger, admiring the small peak of skin that is raised and then allowed to flatten back. The sight of this would make him smile. But, of course, this was before he tattooed his victim’s flesh with mysterious messages using a tattoo gun filled with poison. Death came slowly and painfully.

Eventually a connection is made between Billy and the Bone Collector, the infamous serial killer of a decade ago. Thus, Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are drawn into the case. What follows is one shocker following another as Rhyme and the NYPD work against time to try to figure out where the killer will find his next victim and what in the world the seemingly indecipherable tattoos mean.

Readers won’t doubt that they’re in the hands of a multi award winning thriller writer, a master of the genre after just a few pages of The Skin Collector.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Well, I didn't see that coming! 14. Mai 2014

And that, and that, and that. Picture a roller coaster slowly going up, click, click, click, then you're at the top and falling fast, turns, more turns, upside down and all of a sudden it's over and you are just shaking your head and wondering what happened. That is what reading THE SKIN COLLECTOR feels like.

It is written in typical Jeffrey Deaver fashion: plots, protagonists, lists of clues and then more twist and turns until it is finally over. It is almost like the show 24, but crazier. If you are a Jeffrey Deaver fan you will LOVE THIS BOOK.. If you are not, you will still love it. My only gripe is that I bought it yesterday, the day it was released, and in 24 hours the kindle price dropped 5.00. Still worth every penny though.

5.0 von 5 Sternen As always wonderful. 14. Mai 2014

Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme and Dance books are one of only a handful of book series I devote my limited space to in my "library" with the purpose of re-reading. Although I may have liked other Deaver's books a bit better, Deaver's books are still so much consistently better in writing, fast-placed, intricate, challenging and informative plots than the majority of suspense novels out there, they demand a five star rating.
It is also important to note that reading this novel will provide a much better understanding of his next novel, as this novel also sets the scene for his next one.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good in the beginning, ridiculous towards the end. 20. Mai 2014

Warning: Spoiler Alert!!!!

I'm giving this book four stars because, for the most part, it was a decent read. However the convoluted attempts to tie up the story in the end were borderline absurd.

We have a tattoo artist using poison to kill victims which turns out to be a red herring for a larger terrorist attack by a right wing militia group which turns out to be a cover for an elaborate scheme to break the Watchmaker out of prison with the end game of derailing Lon Sellitto so he can't investigate a mueseum break-in? Seriously? Why not just send a hit man to take care of Sellitto and be done with it?

I appreciate that Deaver isn't trying to be a paint-by-numbers mystery author, but sometimes less is more. Lincoln is smart, but some of the deductions and parallels he made had me rolling my eyes. Nobody is THAT good. I also wish he would stop being so mean to the people on his team. If I had to work with a jerk like him every day I'd be ready to jump off a cliff.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A return to the crime solving I enjoy 21. Mai 2014
Von Luanne Ollivier - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Jeffery Deaver's last book featuring Lincoln Rhyme, Kill Room, left me slightly underwhelmed. There was a lot of political comment in the book that I found myself glossing over. Deaver also took quadriplegic Rhyme away from his New York City townhouse to a crime scene in the Bahamas, but it just didn't work for me. It seemed forced and almost gimmicky. It was an okay read, but not a standout in the series for me.

However, Deaver's latest book, The Skin Collector (#11) takes us back to what Lincoln Rhyme does best - and the type of story I like best - solving cases based on the evidence and minutiae gathered at a crime scene by his team. And Lincoln's superlative powers of deduction.

The Skin Collector opens with a wonderfully creepy scene that introduces us to the perpetrator, Billy. It's one of those chilling prologues that promises a great read. And it delivered. Billy is a tattoo artist who delights in finding pristine skin for inking his cryptic messages. And his choice of ink is deadly. Billy Haven is clever - he's studied Rhyme's methods and leaves little if anything behind at his scenes. Yes, plural - Billy has a plan and it looks like he's taking inspiration from Lincoln's first case - The Bone Collector.

Deaver employs the history of New York and it's tunnel and underground passages to great effect in The Skin Collector. I ended up checking out many of his references online - it's pretty fascinating history.

I thought I had predicted where the plot was going to go about three quarters of the way through the book. But I was pleasantly proven wrong! Deaver inserts a twist, then a turn, then another twist - and I think there may have been another turn. There was one plot element that I found tawdry and icky and somewhat unnecessary involving Billy's aunt. But on the whole, it was an inventive storyline. Part of it is taken from current new stories, making it plausible and relative. The ending finished on a nice little aha, leaving the door open for further entries in a parallel story line. (Yes, I'm being deliberately obtuse)

Familiar characters return - I'm growing quite fond of Ron Pulaski - and some interesting supporting players were introduced. I hope we see more of tattoo artist TT Gordon. 'Foster' daughter Pam can move away though. I find her attitude tiresome. Amelia is still razor sharp, but seems to have mellowed since solidifying her relationship with Linc.

The Skin Collector was a return to the Lincoln Rhyme I enjoy. It's a good crime read, one to tuck in the beach bag this summer.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Don’t miss THE SKIN COLLECTOR; it sets up the beginning of yet another wild Deaver ride. 19. Mai 2014
Von Bookreporter - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Despite what you may have heard elsewhere, THE SKIN COLLECTOR by Jeffery Deaver is not exactly a sequel to THE BONE COLLECTOR, which introduced forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme to the world. While the proceedings that occurred there are referenced occasionally here, and both books share some of the same characters (including, of course, Rhyme and the ever-present and always-welcome Amelia Sachs), one can delve into THE SKIN COLLECTOR with full understanding and enjoyment without reading (or re-reading) its similarly titled predecessor. This is a good thing, as you will want to immerse yourself in this new novel without delay or preamble. It is one of Deaver’s best to date.

The question that is raised within the first few pages is not so much how Deaver does it as how he does it so well. The answer, which he will be happy to tell you, is diligent, single-minded hard work carried out in a workmanlike fashion over a period of many months. This is evident in all of his books, but especially here. We learn the name of the Skin Collector early on; it is Billy Haven, and the binding on the book is barely cracked before he claims his first victim and the reader is given what becomes a crash course in the art and history of skin art, or “tattooing,” as it is popularly and occasionally erroneously known. Haven abducts his victims and murders them by using poisoned ink to create intricate, enigmatic messages in their skin, leaving them on display in underground settings beneath the streets and buildings of New York. What the reader does not learn until near the very end is the “why” behind Haven’s motive. Or, I should say, the “why why.”

Reading a Deaver novel is like peeling a sweet onion to get at its essence: you never really know when you get to the heart of it until you run out of pages to read. And that is especially true of THE SKIN COLLECTOR, which won’t keep you guessing so much as keep you bouncing from one supposition to another about almost everything. What is never in doubt is Rhyme’s tenaciousness. While he may not be sure of the “why” or the “who” of the fiend he pursues, Rhyme remains very good at predicting the “what” of the doer’s plans...even if he and his team are not always 100% successful in preventing it from happening. And even after the case is wrapped up, some of the tape and ribbon come undone. You’ll see. You’ll also love every page and paragraph of it.

In addition to its multiple corkscrew twists and turns, THE SKIN COLLECTOR puts Deaver’s extensive and exhaustive research on display. There is a great deal of information provided about the history and nuts and bolts (literally) of skin art, presented in such a manner that even those who otherwise possess absolutely no interest in the topic will be intrigued. There is also a less exhaustive but equally fascinating presentation about the New York beneath New York. Deaver could conduct guided tours of the tunnels and passageways that connect many of the buildings in the Big Apple, and literally does so within these pages.

Don’t miss THE SKIN COLLECTOR; it sets up the beginning of yet another wild Deaver ride.
