For those who like sketching and starting to explore location drawing 19. Januar 2014
Von Parka - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Sketching Your World is a book of sketching tips and techniques from London-based artist, journalist and Urban Sketcher James Hobbs.

This book is focused on outdoor sketching, location sketching or even urban sketching as it's becoming popularly known.

There are 176 pages with 12 chapters. Each chapter has several topics with each around two pages. This book is essentially a bundle of tips really, with some techniques mentioned but not really technical. So it's an easy breezy read.

You'll get the most out of it if you already know some basics to drawing.

The book talks about the various aspects of location sketching. It covers things like dealing with onlookers, training your observational skills, provides examples of places where you can draw and how you should approach drawing them, talks about reportage drawing, using digital tools for sketching, and getting active online to either share your work or check out other urban sketchers. Several artist profiles are featured as well.

Each topic is rather brief but there are some interesting ideas and suggestions to work on from reading the tips.

The illustrated examples are nice, nothing too overwhelming or anything that you cannot achieve. It's interesting to look at styles of different artists and how they translate the scenes they see onto paper.

I'll recommend the book to those who like sketching and who are starting to explore location drawing.

This book will make you grab a sketchbook and head out the door 20. Januar 2014

If you’ve ever felt moved to keep a sketchbook while traveling, or if you’ve ever wanted to sketch the view of a favorite park in your own home town, but you just haven’t gotten out the door yet, James Hobbs has written a book for you: Sketch Your World – Essential Techniques for Drawing on Location.

More than any other book I’ve read on the topic of sketching on location (and I’ve tried to seek out and read them all), this is one I’d recommend to someone who has never drawn before but is motivated by the desire to capture one’s world on paper. Although it offers some tips and techniques on the basics of drawing (perspective, composition, tone), this book’s emphasis is not on “how to draw” but on embracing the spirit of urban sketching and running with it – wherever that run may lead you.

Many times when I’ve seen books that contain nothing but elegant, refined and dazzling examples by architects or professional painters, I’m inspired by their work but at the same time intimidated. By contrast, Hobbs’ book offers a wide range of examples of sketching styles from more than 60 urban sketchers. Rather than discouraging the beginner, these examples give the impression that everyone’s style is unique, and any style is appropriate for urban sketching. “One of the great things about a sketchbook is that it is yours and yours alone,” Hobbs says. “It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about what you do, and there is no need to please anyone but yourself.”

In addition to chapters on materials and the mechanics of sketching in the field, Hobbs includes sections on ways to approach specific subject matter, such as architecture, people, travel and reportage sketching. One chapter focuses on digital tools, such as using a tablet, and another provides information on joining sketching communities, either online or locally. Throughout these chapters, featured artists like Gabriel Campanario, Miguel Herranz, Marina Grechanik and others discuss how they approach their subject matter specialty.

Hobbs’ overriding attitude is that urban sketching is about self-expression. “A sketchbook is an intimate, personal space in which to express yourself, to explore your surroundings, and record your experiences using the simplest materials,” he says. “The goal is to find our own way of working and our own voice, rather than mimicking someone else’s.” Instead of: “I’ll never be able to draw like that,” Sketch Your World makes me say: “I’m heading out the door with my sketchbook – now.”

It's a keeper 13. März 2014

One of the better books I have purchased. The pictures are beautiful and there is a broad range of examples of sketches. I am looking not an artist or a naturalist or and architect but I want to journal for my own satisfaction and stress relief. This book has given me ideas on improving my journal sketches and has shown me how to use fewer lines to catch the flavor of the views I sketch. As in all books of the type, it gives tips on materials and what essentials to use for the least bulky field pack with the most flexibility of use. There are beautiful examples of pencil sketches through watercolor finished pictures. If Urban sketching is something you think you would enjoy then this is the book for you and if you aren't sure check out the urban sketchers website before you buy the book.

Sketch Your World: Essential Techniques for Drawing on Location 31. März 2014

THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK FOR THOSE ARTISTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE ASPIRING ARTISTS WHO KEEP OR WISH TO KEEP AN ART JOURNAL. THOSE OF US WHO DO KEEP AN ART JOURNAL KNOW THAT GETTING THE ESSENTIALS OF A SKETCH IF NOT THE WHOLE THING IN RELATIVELY LITTLE TIME IS ESSENTIAL, IT IS ONE OF THE SKILLS WE ALL ASPIRE TO. SPENDING SOME TIME WITH THIS BOOK FAMILIARIZES ONE WITH BOTH OBSERVATIONAL AND DRAWING TECHNIQUES THE MASTERY OF WHICH WILL CERTAINLY INCREASE DRAWING SPEED. CHAPTERS 5 THRU 10 ARE ALL ABOUT TECHNIQUES, TOOLS ARE ALSO CONSIDERED FROM THE SIMPLEST TO THE DIGITAL. OVERALL, AN EXCELLENT BOOK, PUBLISHED IN 2013, QUITE UP TO DATE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
