To illustrate the often complicated mathematics that describe such structures, Watts uses plenty of examples from real life, without which this book would quickly move beyond a general science readership. Good book but has huge competition,

This is a very well written book on the topic. I think it's best for a casual first look at network science. There are a couple books out there that have quite a large overlap with the content (e.g. linked...).I would buy either Six Degrees or Linked and then go directly into the scientific literature - don't waste your time (like I did) reading more than one overview book.
